DARLINGTON NWOKOCHA PAYS COURTESY VISIT TO ABIA LABOUR PARTY SWC, BEGINS CONSULTATION PLANS

Umuahia, Abia State — September 17, 2026

The Labour Party senatorial candidate for Abia Central, Distinguished Senator Darlington Nwokocha, on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the State Working Committee (SWC) of the Labour Party at the party’s State Secretariat in Umuahia, Abia State.

The visit was to formally intimate the leadership of the party of his plans to commence political consultations across the Abia Central Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during the visit, Senator Nwokocha, a former National Secretary of the Labour Party, explained that as a committed party man, it was important for him to formally touch base with the state leadership, consolidate with the party structure and officially inform the SWC of his plans before commencing his consultations across Abia Central.

He noted that the Labour Party remains supreme and that his decision to first brief the state leadership was in recognition of the importance of the party structure and the need to ensure that his proposed consultations are undertaken with the knowledge and support of the party leadership.

According to him, the visit was also intended to ensure that the party leadership would be fully aware of his activities as he begins engagements with stakeholders, leaders and party faithful across the senatorial district.

Senator Nwokocha expressed appreciation to the State Chairman of the Labour Party, Hon. Peter Azubuike, and members of the State Working Committee for the manner in which they have continued to pilot the affairs of the party in Abia State.

He commended the leadership for what he described as its commitment to strengthening the party, noting that the Labour Party in Abia State is in good hands.

The former National Secretary further stated that a critical part of his message during the forthcoming political consultations would be to highlight the achievements of Governor Alex Otti’s administration in Abia State and the importance of sustaining the leadership and development direction of the state.

He also emphasised the need for Labour Party members and supporters to remain committed to the party and its candidates across the various elective positions in the 2027 elections.

Senator Nwokocha stressed that the party’s objective should be to work collectively for all candidates carrying the Labour Party ticket, rather than selectively supporting individual candidates.

Responding, the Abia State Chairman of the Labour Party, Hon. Peter Azubuike, appreciated Senator Darlington Nwokocha for visiting the party secretariat to formally intimate the State Working Committee of his plans to commence political consultations.

Hon. Azubuike described the visit as a demonstration of political experience and respect for the party structure, noting that Senator Nwokocha remains one of the prominent leaders of the Labour Party at both the state and national levels.

The State Chairman assured Senator Nwokocha of the support of the party leadership and stated that the party would work within the ambit of the law to support its candidates and strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

Hon. Azubuike further assured Senator Nwokocha that the Labour Party in Abia State would continue to take a firm position against anti-party activities.

He stated that the party leadership was proactive and would take appropriate action, within the provisions of the party’s constitution and applicable laws, against any member found culpable of anti-party activities.

The State Chairman reiterated that the 2027 elections would require collective commitment from members of the Labour Party, stressing the importance of supporting the party’s candidates and strengthening the party’s electoral structures across the state.

The meeting ended with renewed emphasis on party cohesion, consultation, grassroots engagement and the collective strengthening of the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

PROJECT RECLAIM 2023 LABOUR PARTY MANDATE FOR ABIA CENTRAL

What the Labour Party will be doing in Abia Central Senatorial District come 2027 is to reclaim our mandate.

It is a known fact, even to the blind, that Distinguished Senator Darlington Nwokocha won the 2023 Abia Central Senatorial election, but somehow, it was taken away from him.

The past is gone, and we have moved forward from that.

But, in 2027, the Labour Party is poised to reclaim that position.

That position is important to the party because we want legislators in the National Assembly who will work in sync with Governor Alex C. Otti .

We are all aware that Senator Darlington Nwokocha, before the court brouhaha, was already doing very well in the Senate because he is a well-grounded and experienced legislator. A former House of Assembly member and a former House of Representatives member, he is a brainbox when it comes to legislation.

Ndi Abia Central, Distinguished Senator Darlington Nwokocha is going back to the Senate to collaborate with our Governor come 2027.

2027: NO ROOM FOR COMPLACENCY AS ABIA LP SWC INTENSIFIES CONSULTATIVE VISITS TO KEY STAKEHOLDERS

In continuation of its ongoing strategic engagement drive aimed at grassroots mobilization and stakeholder alignment, the State Working Committee (SWC) of the Labour Party, Abia State Chapter, has paid high-level consultative visits to key party leaders, government appointees, and critical political stakeholders across the state.

This tour which has been active for over three weeks, underscores the party's firm commitment to ensuring that no stakeholder is left behind and that all hands are on deck as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

During the visits, the SWC emphasized that the 2027 elections represent a critical "consolidation election" for the Labour Party and the people of Abia State. The party leadership made it clear that there is no room for complacency of any kind, stressing that the transformative "New Abia" ideology championed by His Excellency, Governor Alex Otti, OFR, must be sustained to preserve the massive progress currently being enjoyed across the state. The primary objective remains delivering a total landslide victory for all Labour Party candidates across all elective positions in 2027.

Receiving the delegation, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Navy Commander Macdonald Ubah (Retd.), commended the SWC for what he described as a "great, well-thought-out, and timely wake-up call." Assuring the party of his total readiness for the 2027 polls, Commander Ubah noted that Governor Alex Otti has elevated governance and leadership standards in Abia State beyond measure. He urged all party stakeholders to rise to the occasion and collaborate closely with the SWC to secure a resounding victory.

In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Investment Promotion/PPP, Chief Jerome Nbaonu Green-Amakwe, applauded the caliber and dedication of the current SWC leadership. Expressing deep confidence in the party's direction, Chief Green-Amakwe commended the strategic mobilization efforts and assured the delegation that the Labour Party remains on a clear path to victory in 2027.

Speaking during the visit, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Hon. Ferdinand Ekeoma, praised the SWC for its proactive leadership and forward-thinking vision. Reaffirming his unwavering commitment to the party’s overarching goals, Hon. Ekeoma assured the delegation of his full dedication toward executing a seamless media and mobilization drive that will guarantee a sweeping victory for the party at all levels.

In Isiala Ngwa North LGA, the delegation was hosted at his Nsulu country home by prominent Labour Party leader and political stakeholder, Hon. Chinsom Michael Abengowe, alongside key community and local party leaders.

Reflecting on the party's journey, Hon. Abengowe recalled that his ward in Nsulu was the only ward won by Governor Alex Otti in 2023 in Isiala Ngwa North when there was minimal party structure on the ground. He noted that today, even the blind can see the remarkable performance and tangible achievements of the Governor.

Hon. Abengowe assured the SWC that the Labour Party's victory in 2027 will be a landslide, not just in his immediate ward, but across all of Nsulu and the entire Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area. Expressing his deep seated gratitude for the Governor's performance, he shared that Governor Otti’s infrastructural and economic transformation of Abia State has given Abians at home and in the diaspora renewed pride, enabling him to hold his head high among business partners nationwide.

Labour Party Receives Former Umunneochi Chairman, Ex-Homeland Security Commissioner Dan Okoli

Abia State Labour Party welcomes Okoli into its fold, says his wealth of experience will strengthen the party’s grassroots structure in Umunneochi

The Abia State Labour Party has formally received Hon. Dan Okoli, former Chairman of Umunneochi Local Government Area and former Commissioner for Abia State Homeland Security, into its fold, describing his entry as a significant addition to the party’s growing political family in Umunneochi, Abia North and Abia State.

Hon. Okoli joined the Labour Party on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at his hometown of Lokpaukwu in Umunneochi Local Government Area, where he was officially received into the party by the State Chairman, Hon. Peter Azubuike, alongside members of the State Working Committee (SWC).

Those who accompanied the State Chairman included the Abia North Zonal Deputy Chairman, Hon. Prince Okechukwu, Esq.; State Organizing Secretary, Hon. Ikechukwu Ben Oti; State Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emenike Iroegbu; and Abia North Deputy Youth Leader, Hon. Uche Best Ajaero, among other party leaders and stakeholders.

While formally receiving Hon. Dan Okoli into the Labour Party, the State Chairman, Hon. Peter Azubuike, welcomed the former commissioner and former Umunneochi council chairman, assuring him that the Labour Party operates on the principle of equal entitlement for all members.

Azubuike stated that immediately an individual joins the Labour Party, such a person becomes a full member of the political family and is entitled to participate in the affairs of the party in accordance with its constitution and guidelines.

He expressed confidence that Okoli’s political experience and understanding of the local political terrain would contribute significantly to the growth of the Labour Party in Lokpaukwu and Umunneochi Local Government Area.

According to him, the party expects greater political results from Lokpaukwu and Umunneochi following Okoli’s entrance into the Labour Party.

The State Chairman urged the new member to work with existing party leaders and members to strengthen the party’s structure and prepare the ground for a successful outing in the 2027 general elections.

Azubuike also used the occasion to reaffirm the Labour Party’s commitment to the re-election of the member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah, describing his performance in the National Assembly as satisfactory.

The Labour Party chairman questioned the decision by former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Honorable Nkiru Onyejeocha, to leave a ministerial position and return to contest for the same federal constituency seat she represented for 16 years.

He argued that there was a need to give other qualified people, particularly younger politicians, the opportunity to represent the constituency.

“Must it be her alone?” Azubuike asked, stressing that political opportunities should be allowed to circulate among capable sons and daughters of the constituency.

He maintained that the Labour Party is taking the re-election of Hon. Amobi Ogah seriously and called on all Labour Party supporters across Umunneochi to rally behind him.

The State Chairman further urged Labour Party members and supporters in Umunneochi to mobilise for the party’s candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.

He called for support for Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah for the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, Chief Dr. David Ogba Onuoha Bourdex MFR, OON for Abia North Senatorial District, the Labour Party’s State House of Assembly candidate for the constituency, Hon. Nwachi, and Governor Alex Chioma Otti OFR for Governor of Abia State.

He said the party’s objective remains to consolidate its structures at the grassroots and work collectively towards victory for its candidates across the various elective positions.

Azubuike thereafter formally welcomed Hon. Dan Okoli into the Labour Party and presented the Labour Party flag to him as a symbol of his official entry into the party.

In his response, Hon. Dan Okoli gave a detailed account of his political experience, highlighting the various leadership positions he has occupied and his experience in public service.

Okoli assured Labour Party members and supporters in his domain that he was joining the party with a wealth of experience and a determination to contribute positively to its growth.

He pledged to work closely with existing leaders and members of the party, stressing that his objective was to strengthen the Labour Party and ensure that the party keeps flying in Lokpaukwu and Umunneochi.

He called for cooperation among members and expressed readiness to deploy his experience towards building a stronger and more formidable Labour Party structure ahead of the 2027 elections.

The event was attended by the Labour Party Chairman in Umunneochi LGA, ward chairmen and their executives, leaders of the Hon. Amobi Ogah and Bourdex campaign teams, as well as other party leaders, stakeholders and supporters.

LABOUR PARTY COMMISERATES WITH NLC OVER THE DEATH OF EMMANUEL UGBOAJA

The leadership of the Labour Party has expressed deep sadness over the death of Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who passed away recently at the age of 60.

Comrade Ugboaja was a strong unionist, a committed democrat and a pillar of support to the current leadership of the Labour Party. His death leaves a painful void not only in the Labour movement but also in the Labour Party family.

He played a pivotal role in the enviable relationship that currently exists between the Labour Party and the organised labour movement, particularly the NLC. He actively participated and made invaluable contributions to several meetings and deliberations that culminated in the birth of our new Party Constitution.

The Labour movement and the Labour Party family will continue to miss his invaluable contributions to the growth and development of the Party, a political platform whose birth he actively participated in.

Comrade Ugboaja was a member of the National Executive Council (NEC) that approved the formation of the Party for Social Democracy (PSD) in 2003, which later metamorphosed into the Labour Party in 2004. He subsequently rose to become the Deputy National Secretary of the Party and also served as National Secretary of the NLC Political Commission.

Beyond his contributions to the Labour movement and the Labour Party, Comrade Ugboaja played several important roles in the struggle for the sustenance and deepening of Nigeria's democracy, an ideal that places him firmly within the core values and vision of the Labour Party.

As a member of the defunct National Constitutional Reform Conferences of 2005 and 2014, the nation will continue to remember Comrade Ugboaja's immense contributions in shaping the final reports of the above two conferences.

He was also a Director of the Alliance for Credible Elections, where he championed a national campaign between 2007 and 2010 for electoral reforms. The campaign contributed to the process that culminated in the establishment of the Justice Uwais Electoral Reform Committee by the then President, Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.

Comrade Ugboaja's life was therefore one of service to the Labour movement, the democratic cause and the Nigerian nation. His contributions to these causes will remain a part of our collective history and will not be forgotten.

While we mourn this painful and irreparable loss, the Labour Party extends its heartfelt condolences to the leadership and entire membership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, the organised labour movement, his colleagues, friends and associates, and, most importantly, the immediate family he leaves behind.

We pray that God Almighty grants eternal rest to his soul and gives his family, the Labour movement and the entire nation the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.
