Governor Radda Engages Guardians Worldwide on Carbon Credit Initiative for Katsina

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has taken a bold step toward sustainable development by engaging with officials of Guardians Worldwide (GWW), a global environmental consultancy, to explore carbon credit opportunities for the state under the Katsina Green Growth Agenda (KAGGA).

The high-level engagement, which took place in Abuja on Wednesday marked Governor Radda's first official assignment following his recent minor accident a testament to his unwavering dedication to duty and the future of Katsina State.

The meeting was part of broader efforts to position Katsina as a leading force in green innovation, climate action, and environmental sustainability in Nigeria.

Delegates from Guardians Worldwide’s Brazil and Nigeria offices were in attendance, including Ms. Débora Lira de Lacerda and Ms. Lucimar Prata dos Santos from Brazil, and Alhaji Ahmad Muazu from Nigeria. The delegation was led by Mr. Kamilu Hassan Hamza, Director of Guardians Worldwide Africa.

Welcoming the team, Governor Radda described carbon trading as a “new frontier” in climate finance that Katsina must embrace. “This initiative speaks directly to our state’s long-term ambition to build a resilient economy anchored on sustainability, innovation, and international collaboration,” he said.

He further noted that under the Katsina Green Growth Agenda (KAGGA), the state had already begun laying the groundwork for attracting green finance. He emphasized that such partnerships could open up new revenue opportunities, safeguard the environment, and empower local communities.

The initiative is being driven by the Office of the Special Adviser on Banking and Finance, Hajiya Bilkisu Sulaiman Ibrahim, in partnership with the Department of Banking and Finance and other relevant MDAs. The goal is to integrate Katsina into the global carbon market through verifiable carbon credit projects.

Guardians Worldwide which operates across the UK, Brazil, Chile, Portugal, Kenya, Canada, and Nigeria expressed strong interest in supporting Katsina in establishing a clear roadmap for carbon credit registration, measurement, verification, and trading in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and global best practices.

Governor Radda expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating: “This is not just about planting trees or cutting emissions. It is about building an economy where nature is valued, where innovation thrives, and where our people benefit from a greener future.”

Both parties agreed to set up a technical team to immediately begin baseline assessment work and design a carbon credit registry framework that aligns with Katsina’s unique ecosystem.

This partnership marks yet another milestone in Governor Radda forward thinking leadership and his strong commitment to climate smart development and global cooperation.

Also present at the meeting were the Special Adviser on Climate Change, Professor Al-Amin; Honourable Commissioner for Lands and Physical Planning, Dr. Faisal Umar Kaita; Principal Private Secretary to the Governor, Hon. Abdullahi Aliyu Turaji; and the Governor’s Lead Consultant, Haroun Abba.

Gambian President Adama Barrow Pays Condolence Visit to Katsina Over Former President Buhari’s Passing

The President of The Republic of The Gambia, His Excellency Adama Barrow, today paid a condolence visit to Katsina State following the passing of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari.

President Barrow, accompanied by his wife, Her Excellency Fatoumata Bah-Barrow, arrived at Umaru Musa Yar’adua International Airport, Katsina, at exactly 12:35 PM today.

He was received by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Abdullahi Garba Faskari, alongside other senior government officials.

After a brief inspection of a Guard of Honour by military personnel in the airport, President Barrow proceeded to Daura to personally condole with the Buhari family and the Emir of Daura, His Royal Highness, Alhaji (Dr.) Umar Faruq Umar.

At the late President’s residence in Daura, the Gambian leader was warmly received by Buhari’s eldest son, Yusuf Buhari; his brother, Alhaji Musa Haro (District Head of Dumurkol); and Sabiu ‘Tunde’ Yusuf, alongside other family members.

Speaking during the visit, President Barrow described the death of Muhammadu Buhari as a personal and continental loss. He stressed that the late Nigerian leader was not just a statesman, but a symbol of integrity and African unity.

“President Buhari was a great leader, a brother, and a friend to me,” he said. “He was widely respected across Africa. When I heard of his passing, I felt it wasn’t enough to send a message I had to come here in person to mourn with his family and the people of Nigeria.”

He reaffirmed that President Buhari played a critical role in promoting democracy in Africa particularly during The Gambia’s own political transition. Barrow recalled how Buhari stood firmly in defense of the democratic will of the Gambian people during a tense political impasse in 2016.

“He stood for justice,” the Gambian President emphasized. “He helped protect the democratic wishes of Gambians, and his support during our most difficult time will never be forgotten. His words to me during a private meeting in Mali, just before I assumed office, were very clear that sovereignty belongs to the people. Those words have guided me ever since.”

He urged Nigerians to take solace in the legacy Buhari left behind a legacy of discipline, courage, and leadership in service to the people. “President Buhari’s passing is painful,” Barrow noted, “but as Muslims, we accept Allah’s will. I offer my condolences on behalf of myself, my family, and the entire people of The Gambia to the Buhari family and to all Nigerians.”

Responding on behalf of the family, Yusuf Buhari expressed gratitude to President Barrow for the visit, noting that the presence of the Gambian leader was deeply reassuring.

“Your visit today has touched our hearts,” he said. “Hearing your reflections about our father has strengthened us. He always taught us never to take what doesn’t belong to us, and to lead with honesty and humility. We thank you for honouring him.”

President Barrow’s was accompanied to daura by the Secretary to the Katsina State Government, Barrister Abdullahi Garba Faskari, with other members of the State Executive Council in attendance.
