The Shadow’s Debt

The restoration of the river came with a hidden price. While the water flowed, the Shadow Realm—a mirror version of Akoma—had been thinned. A figure emerged from the darkness of the tree’s roots: Mosi, a spirit prince whose skin looked like smoke and whose eyes were two flickering embers.

An impossibly wide, prehistoric tree with bark that looks like wrinkled elephant skin. Its branches reach out like gnarled fingers. In its center is a natural, eye-level hollow where the Heart of Akoma (the emerald) sits.

I didn’t just turn around. I ran.

I bolted back inside and locked the deadbolt, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. I kept staring at that photo. The woman in the red jacket has my face, my hair, my jewelry—but she’s standing in a version of my driveway that has a tree I cut down three years ago

I went to my closet and threw everything on the floor. No red jacket. But then, I felt something hard in the pocket of the black dress I’m wearing right now.

I pulled out a small, brass key. It has a tag attached to it with a handwritten note: “The basement door isn’t locked from the outside. It’s locked from the in.”
I live alone. I don’t have a basement. Or at least, I didn’t until I looked under the rug in the hallway and found a heavy iron ring bolted to the floorboards.

I can hear someone—or something—knocking from underneath the wood. Slow. Rhythmic. Three knocks. Then a pause. Then three more.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗛𝗜𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗘𝗡𝗩𝗘𝗟𝗢𝗣𝗘
I was walking to my front door tonight when I noticed a plain black envelope tucked into the frame. No stamp, no address. Just my name written in white ink.

Inside wasn't a letter. It was a single, high-definition photo of me... from exactly five minutes before I found the envelope. I’m standing at the mailbox, looking at my phone, completely unaware that someone was standing right behind me.

But here’s the part that’s keeping me awake: In the photo, I’m wearing a red jacket. I don't own a red jacket. I’m wearing black tonight.

It’s like someone took a photo of a version of me that doesn't exist in this house. I’ve locked the doors, but I can’t stop looking at the window.

What would you do? Call someone, or go back outside to see if the person with the camera is still there? ✉️
