BARKIN-LADI FIRST LADY LAUNCHES THE SEASONAL MALARIA CHEMO-PREVENTION(SMC) EXERCISE; DISTRIBUTES FREE DIAPERING ESSENTIALS TO NURSING MOTHERS

The First Lady of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Ngo. Elizabeth Pwajok, has launched the Seasonal Malaria Chemo-prevention (SMC) exercise at the Primary Health Care (PHC) Secretariat in Barkin Ladi.

Accompanied by Hajiya Binta Hamisu Hanani, wife of the ALGON Chairman, Ngo. Elizabeth Pwajok commended stakeholders in the health sector for their dedication to providing quality healthcare services to communities. She specifically praised the Malaria Consortium for sponsoring the SMC drugs, which will significantly reduce malaria prevalence, especially among children. The First Lady urged mothers to bring their children between the ages 3 months to less than 5 years for the free, safe, and effective malaria drugs.

Ngo. Elizabeth Pwajok also appreciated most importantly His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, alongside his wife, Barr. Helen Mutfwang, and the Executive Chairman of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Da Hon. Pwajok Stephen Gyang, for prioritizing the health sector.

Hajiya Binta Hamisu Hanani echoed her voice during the program, advising women to participate in the exercise and commending the Malaria Consortium and stakeholders for their efforts to combat malaria.

Goodwill messages were received from prominent figures, including Gwom Rwei Gwol, Da. Edward Gyang, Hon. Polycarp Sabo, Supervisory Councillor for Health, and Mrs. Nanko Goteng, Director of Health.

The program which drew a large attendance of traditional rulers, religious leaders, directors, political appointees, and many critical stakeholders, ended with the distribution of diapering essentials to nursing mothers in their numbers, from within the local government.

MINISTRY OF WATER RESOURCES AND ENERGY, BARKIN-LADI LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCIL STRENGTHEN PARTNERSHIP ON TCN PROJECT

The Plateau State Ministry of Water Resources and Energy, led by Permanent Secretary Lohnan Gambo, paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of Barkin-Ladi Local Government Council, Honorable Stephen Gyang Pwajok. The aim of the visit was to strengthen partnership and collaboration on the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) project that passes through the local government area.

The Director of Energy Access, Engr. Lere Nuhu, explained that the TCN project started way back during the Shagari regime. The project is supposed to carry 132KV power from Makeri in Jos, through Jos South, Barkin-Ladi, Mangu, with a substation at Pankshin. It is aimed at supplying power to the Plateau people, most especially the Central and Southern zones of the state.

He further explained that although the substation has been completed 15 years ago, the transmission lines are yet to be completed to supply power to other parts. This is due to delays in the contract by TCN caused by various reasons such as right-of-way, vandalization, and encroachment. The government has been able to clear the issue of encroachment with compensation, but encroachment of structures and farming activities have remained an issue. The Plateau State Government has approved the project to continue early this year. He added that there is a need for sensitization to allow right-of-way for the contractor to carry out smooth operations. He emphasized the need for synergy between the ministry and local governments affected.

The Chairman, Honorable Stephen Gyang Pwajok, responded by welcoming the delegation to the local government. He appealed to them that it's essential that before the contractor resumes work at the boundaries of the local government, the local government should be properly informed. This would enable the council to know the areas affected and the councilors at those areas would help inform the people. He applauded them for coming to the local government for support and assured them that control mechanisms would be put in place to avoid building along the right-of-way. The local government would seek the help of the church to spread awareness.

The Chairman used the opportunity to talk about the issue of water supply in the local government and expressed his willingness to discuss intensively about water supply to Barkin-Ladi to address the plight of his people. He also pointed out that there was an electrification project of Foron, Kabwis area that took off 5 years ago but was yet to be completed. It would be his desire that it be completed. He promised that any area the local government can come in, it would be happy to do so.

Engr. Lere informed the chairman that Gana Ropp also has an electrification project that the Executive Governor has approved to be completed. Among the delegation from the Plateau State Ministry of Water Resources and Energy were Engr. Nyango S. Nyango and Engr. Pyahar Silas.
