Onofiok Luke commends Gov Umo Eno on Bulk Purchase Agency Law

By Imó Etim

A gubernatorial aspirant in the 2023 general election in Akwa Ibom, Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke has commended Governor Umo Eno over the recent Bulk Purchase Agency Bill which he signed into law on March 14, 2024.

Luke made the commendation while appearing as a Keynote Speaker at the 2024 Eastern Bar Forum Summit, organised by the Nigerian Bar Association on Friday, June 21, 2024, in Uyo.

Speaking on the topic: "Effective Legislation: A veritable tool for contemporary economic development", the former House of Assembly Speaker highlighted ways in which legislations spurs economic development, identifying the recent Bulk Purchase Agency Law of Governor Umo Eno as one key area.

He said: "Amidst the economic turmoil, government at the national and sub-national levels are crafting social investment programs to mitigate the effects of the current hardships."

"An exemplary sub-national effort is the Akwa Ibom State Bulk Purchase Agency Law, introduced as an executive Bill by Governor Umo Eno. This law aims to address the challenges of the times and is akin to the famous food stamp programs of the Western world," he stressed.

The Abuja-based legal practitioner also expressed his conviction that effective legislation was crucial to reversing the economic decline of the country and setting Nigeria on the path to sustainable growth and prosperity.

A Tiv Man walks into a Bar

A Tiv man called Hashim, who just moved to Lagos from Benue, walks into a bar and orders four glasses of Whiskey.

He sits at his table, drinking a sip from of each glass one after the other.

When he finishes them, he comes back to the bar and orders four more.

The bartender approaches and tells Hashim:

"You know, a glass of whiskey is less chill and poignant after I pour it.

It would taste better if you bought one at a time."

Hashim replies:

"Well, you see, I have three brothers.

One is in Imo State, one is in Calabar and the other is in Kaduna.

When we all left our home in Benue, we promised that we will drink this way to remember the days when we drank together.

So I'm drinking one glass for each of my brothers and one for myself."

The bartender admits that this is a nice custom, and leaves the matter there.

Hashim becomes a regular in the bar, and always drinks the same way.

He orders four glasses and drinks by sipping them each in turn.

One day, he comes in and only orders three glasses.

All the regulars in the bar take notice of this and the entire bar falls silent.

When he comes back to the bar for the second round, the bartender says:

"I don't want to intrude on your grief, but we all wanted to offer our condolences on your loss."

Hashim looked very surprised for a moment, then realizes what the bartender meant and he laughs and says:

"Oh, no, everybody is doing fine," and he explains:

"It's just that my wife and I joined the Baptist Church and I had to quit drinking."

“It hasn't affected my three brothers though" 😁😁😁

NIGERIA Vs CÔTE D'IVOIRE : READY OR WEARY?

Read these facts and figures about AFCON...

Five of the last six host nations to reach the final have won the tournament, apart from Nigeria in 2000 (drew 2-2 with Cameroon, lost 4-3 on penalties).

Côte d'Ivoire are the first host nation to reach the CAF Africa Cup of Nations final since Egypt in 2006, who won the trophy that year on penalties against Côte d'Ivoire after a 0-0 draw.

Nigeria and Côte d'Ivoire are meeting for the eighth time at the Africa Cup of Nations (3 wins for Nigeria, 2 for Côte d'Ivoire, and 2 draws).

Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen has had 24 shots at the 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations, although he’s only managed one goal so far (4% conversion rate).

All six of Côte d'Ivoire’s goals at AFCON 2023 have been scored by different players (Fofana, Krasso, Kessié, Adingra, Diakité and Haller), they last had more goal scorers in a single edition in 2008 (8).

Five of the last six host nations to reach the final have won the tournament, the exception being Nigeria in 2000 (drew 2-2 with Cameroon, lost 4-3 on penalties).

William Troost-Ekong has scored from four of his five shots on target at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations overall for Nigeria, converting two penalties at this year's tournament.

Côte d'Ivoire’s Evan Ndicka has completed 367 passes at this year’s CAF Africa Cup of Nations – since 2010, that is a record by a player at a single tournament. In an AFCON final in that time, the most passes completed by a player is 81 by Senegal’s Kalidou Koulibaly in 2021 vs Egypt.

Ola Aina has created seven chances for Nigerian teammate Victor Osimhen at this year’s CAF Africa Cup of Nations – it’s the most by one teammate to another at an AFCON tournament since 2013, when Charles Kaboré created nine chances for Aristide Bancé for Burkina Faso.

All four of Côte d'Ivoire’s previous CAF Africa Cup of Nations finals have ended goalless and gone to penalties – they won two of those shootouts (1992 and 2015, both vs Ghana) and lost two (2006 vs Egypt and 2012 vs Zambia).

On February 3, 2013 (11 years ago), Nigeria defeated Côte d'Ivoire 2:1 in the Orange AFCON knockout stage, where they went ahead to beat Burkina Faso 1:0 in the final to clinch the trophy.

With these facts and figures, should Nigerians still feel ready or be weary?

AFCON 2023: Nigeria 🇳🇬 Versus South 🇿🇦

One of the most intriguing matches I have seen in my life, thanks and no thanks to VAR.

4:2 win for Nigeria it ended, after a penalty shoot out sequel to a dramatic 1:1 draw in 120 minutes played.

Crisscrossing from soul-lifting to spirit-dampening moments, then sn*******ng to more eye-popping moments, yet, our Super Eagles remained undaunted, dogged, and even more willing to soar higher.

The penalties, back and forth, were true tests of class, calibre and composure for both teams.

Thank you Stanley Nwabali, Nigerians can now rest assured we have a goalie in you to fill up the visible vacuum left by our favorite Vincent Enyeama.

Alas, we ended up (b)eating Banana Banana, even when they didn't get to ripen on time.

Maybe Davido should invite Tyla over to watch the finals together in Côte D'ivoire
(Grammys).

Congratulations, Nigerians all over the world. Classic footballing it was tonight.

N200,000 Minimum Wage no longer tenable - TUC

The Trade Union Congress said on Tuesday that the N200,000 minimum wage it earlier proposed to the Federal Government was no longer realistic, considering the country’s current economic situation.

The congress, which spoke through its National Deputy President, Tommy Etim Okon, was reacting to Tuesday’s inauguration of the Minimum Wage Committee by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

He said, “You are aware that when we opted for the N200,000, the socio-economic challenges were not as biting as they are now. And when you now look at the exchange rate, it was not what it is now. The naira rate not been devalued as it is now. So, N200,000 is no longer tenable.”

“We are not going there with a fixed amount, but definitely not N200,000. By the time we get there, we will decide based on the socio-economic situation. That’s what we are going to base our national minimum wage discussion and negotiation on.”
