COURT DISCHARGES IBOM AIR PASSENGER, COMFORT EMMANSON

An Ikeja Magistrate Court in Lagos State has discharged Comfort Emmanson, the passenger accused of unruly behavior and assault aboard an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos. Magistrate Olanrewaju Salami granted the discharge after the police withdrew the five-count charge against her.

The charges included unruly behavior, assault, and willful damage to property, specifically an aircraft divider curtain valued at $2,500 and a braided wig worth ₦110,000 belonging to a flight attendant. Emmanson was initially remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre after failing to meet her ₦500,000 bail conditions with two sureties.

The decision to withdraw the charges followed consultations between Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and stakeholders in the aviation sector. Keyamo stated that the move came after reviewing the incident, considering appeals from concerned individuals, and noting Emmanson's show of remorse. Ibom Air also withdrew its complaint against her.

In his ruling, Magistrate Salami advised Emmanson to display wisdom in the future, noting that she played a role in the controversy. The case has generated discussions on unruly passenger behavior and the need for consistent enforcement of aviation regulations.

SECURITY CONSULTANT CALLS FOR CCTV INSTALLATION IN NIGERIAN PRISONS

A security consultant, Dickson Osajie, has urged the Nigerian government to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems in all correctional facilities to prevent jailbreaks and enhance security. This call comes after a recent jailbreak incident in Nasarawa State where 16 inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi.

Osajie believes that the installation of CCTV systems would serve as a deterrent to would-be escapees, as they would be aware of being monitored. He also emphasized that CCTV systems would enable prison authorities to respond quickly to emergencies and prevent incidents.

NSDC Signs Agreements with Four Operators for Greenfield Sugar Projects

August 13, 2025 - The National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) has signed agreements with four operators to develop greenfield sugar projects in Nigeria, aiming to collectively produce 400,000 tonnes of sugar annually. This initiative is part of the council's efforts to reduce the country's reliance on imported sugar and achieve domestic self-sufficiency.

The four operators will develop 100,000-tonne facilities each across Nigeria's agricultural belt. The projects are expected to generate significant employment opportunities in rural areas, develop local infrastructure, and create upstream and downstream economic opportunities.

The NSDC will provide customized project development support and cover critical service costs to ensure the ventures achieve commercial viability. This move is seen as a significant step towards reducing Nigeria's import bill and promoting economic growth.

The development of these sugar projects aligns with President Bola Tinubu's industrial policy, prioritizing import substitution and local value addition across key sectors. The NSDC has designated 2025 as a year of "accelerated development" for sugar projects, reflecting the government's urgency in addressing food security concerns and reducing import dependence.
