THE POWER OF PRIVILEGE
By Prince Abubakar
In a society where value is often assessed solely by effort, we occasionally overlook the subtle yet profound influence of privilege on shaping destinies.
Privilege does not always manifest itself in an overt manner. It may present itself as a gentle respite, a renewed opportunity, or simply the fortune of being born into an advantageous area, family, or circumstance. It serves as an invisible force, propelling certain individuals forward before others even begin their journey.
However, it is important to acknowledge this reality: privilege is not an offense—it is a responsibility. It embodies power, and , like all forms of power, it necessitates intentionality, humility, and guidance.
The true strength of privilege resides not in its possession, but in its application. Some individuals inherit wealth, while others inherit wisdom. Some find doors already open, while others must persistently knock until their hands are sore. Yet, those who recognize their privilege—whether it be in the form of education, access, health, influence, or opportunity—and utilize it to uplift others, attain not only success but also significance.
We are not summoned to feel remorse for what we possess; we are urged to be cognizant of our assets. For awareness fosters empathy, and empathy catalyzes action.
Reflect upon this: Who am I due to the privileges I possess? More importantly, who can be elevated because of my influence?
Every privilege—be it material, social, intellectual, or spiritual—represents a seed. Cultivate it. Tend to it. Allow it to provide shelter for those who are weary and nourishment for those who hunger.
This encapsulates the power of privilege: when it serves as a bridge rather than a barrier, a platform rather than a pedestal, and when it inspires purpose rather than pride.
In doing so, we contribute to creating a more equitable, compassionate, and harmonious world—through each deliberate act of privilege.
