MTN has suspended its Xtratime service after new government rules classified airtime and data loans as digital lending. The company says it’s temporary while they sort licensing and compliance.

Big move… especially for millions who depend on airtime borrowing daily.

Telecom giant MTN Nigeria has temporarily suspended its popular airtime and data borrowing service, Xtratime, following new regulatory requirements.

The company announced the move in a filing to the Nigerian Exchange Limited, explaining that the decision is to comply with fresh rules introduced by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.

Xtratime, widely used by prepaid subscribers, allows customers to borrow airtime or data and repay on their next recharge. However, under the new Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations, 2025, such services are now classified as digital credit and require proper licensing and regulatory approval.

MTN stated that the suspension is temporary and necessary to align with the updated compliance framework. The company added that other options for purchasing airtime and data remain available to customers.

Despite the pause, MTN assured investors that the move is not expected to significantly affect its revenue, noting that the service represents only a small portion of its earnings.

The new regulations expand oversight of digital lending in Nigeria, now covering telecom operators and other platforms offering short-term credit services. Companies in this space are required to register and meet stricter standards on operations, data protection, and consumer rights.

The regulatory tightening comes amid growing concerns over rising consumer debt, privacy issues, and the practices of digital lenders across the country.
