1. Economic Boost: The deep seaport will serve as a major maritime hub in the South-South region of Nigeria, facilitating import and export activities. This will attract businesses, industries, and logistics companies to the state, creating employment opportunities and boosting the local economy.

2. Improved Cargo Handling: With a natural draft of 17.5 meters, the Ibom Deep Sea Port will be able to accommodate larger vessels, including modern container ships and bulk carriers. This will enhance cargo handling efficiency and reduce logistics costs, benefiting both businesses and consumers.

3. Diversification of Revenue Sources: The port will provide an additional revenue stream for Akwa Ibom State and the Federal Government through port fees, tariffs, and taxes. This will contribute to the economic development of the state and the country.

4. Infrastructure Development: The construction and operation of the deep seaport will necessitate the development of supporting infrastructure, such as roads, rail networks, and housing facilities. This will lead to improved connectivity and living standards in the region.

5. Investment Attraction: The presence of a modern deep seaport will make Akwa Ibom State and the surrounding areas more attractive for both domestic and foreign investments, particularly in sectors like manufacturing, logistics, and export-oriented industries.

6. Regional Integration: The Ibom Deep Sea Port will strengthen Nigeria's maritime connectivity with other countries in the Gulf of Guinea region, facilitating trade and economic cooperation with neighboring nations.

However, it is essential to ensure proper planning, environmental impact assessment, and sustainable development practices during the construction and operation of the port to mitigate any potential negative effects on the local communities and the environment.

Overall, if executed effectively, the Ibom Deep Sea Port has the potential to be a game-changer for Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria, catalyzing economic growth, job creation, and improved regional integration.

The birth of Akwa Ibom State was the triumphant culmination of a long and arduous struggle, a victory hard-won by the resilient people who called the mainland of the erstwhile Cross River State their home.

On the 23rd of September 1987, the visionary Military Administration of General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida ushered in a new era, inscribing Akwa Ibom onto the map of Nigeria.

This momentous act was a testament to the unwavering determination of a people whose relentless pursuit of self-determination had spanned years of unwavering resolve.

The creation of this state was not merely the redrawing of borders, but a profound affirmation of the indomitable spirit that had fueled their quest for autonomy and self-governance.

Ekpang Nkukwo: A Culinary Crown Jewel of Southern Nigeria

(The Food For The God)

By Imaobong Affia

Beyond its oil wealth, the southern lands of Akwa
Ibom state in Nigeria boast a treasure trove of delicious and healthy delicacies. From the fragrant Afang soup to the mouthwatering Oto Mboro, the region's culinary scene is a vibrant tapestry of flavors. However, few dishes rival the legendary Ekpang Nkukwo, a dish so revered it has earned the nickname "The Food for the Gods."

Ekpang Nkukwo's origins trace back to the Bakweri, Bafaw, and Oroko people of Cross River and Akwa Ibom states. This culinary masterpiece is crafted from a unique blend of grated water yams and cocoyams, offering a delightful textural experience. Once neatly wrapped in cocoyam leaves, it is adorned with a symphony of proteins, including goat meat, smoked fish, cow skin, and periwinkles. The resulting parcels simmer in a flavorful broth, creating an explosion of taste and aroma.

However, Ekpang Nkukwo's preparation is a labor of love. The meticulous process, from grating the yams to the intricate wrapping, demands time and dedication. This time-consuming nature is why the dish is traditionally reserved for special occasions, gracing the tables at weddings, newborn dedications, and homecoming celebrations for mothers returning after long journeys. Perhaps, its limited availability and the complexity of its preparation are what contribute to its revered status as "The Food for the Gods."

Beyond its cultural significance, Ekpang Nkukwo is also revered for its potential health benefits. Rumored to be one of Nigeria's healthiest meals, this dish boasts a rich tapestry of nutrients. It is believed to aid in combating and controlling diabetes, blood pressure, and even menopausal symptoms in women.

So, if you ever find yourself in the southern regions
of Nigeria, be sure to seek out this culinary gem.
Ekpang Nkukwo is an experience that transcends
mere taste; it's a journey into the heart and soul of a
vibrant culture, where time-honored traditions
meet exquisite flavors.
