STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

VP Shettima Launches $500m Niger Delta Agricultural Investment Fund

Says President Tinubu places food security among his administration's top priorities

Lauds South-South for not relying only on its oil wealth and abandoning food production to other regions*

The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, has launched the $500 million Niger Delta Agricultural Investment Fund, describing it as a laudable development for a nation whose foundation was built on agrarian economy and whose soil paid its bills before the discovery of oil.

He observed that Nigeria cannot afford to take the promise of an agricultural boom for granted, noting that while nations survive on many resources, they endure because they can feed themselves.

Senator Shettima stated this on Wednesday in Abuja during the Niger Delta Agricultural Development and Investment Summit jointly convened by the Office of the Vice President and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Agriculture, the VP pointed out, is not only the foundation of civilisation but also the first guarantee of political stability, just as he said, "Before a people raise cities, they must learn to feed them, and before a state earns the loyalty of its citizens, it must secure their daily bread."

Underscoring the significance of agriculture to Nigeria, he said, "The groundnut pyramids of the North, the cocoa estates of the West, and the palm produce of the East and the Delta financed our earliest schools and hospitals and underwrote the young institutions of a new republic."

VP Shettima regretted that the oil boom came with an ease that "dulled the industry of the cutlass," teaching the country that once fed itself to, instead, "import what its own soil could grow."

He, however, applauded the Nigerian Delta region for the Agriculture Investment Fund Initiative, saying "what makes this vision inspiring is that it arises from a region that could have rested on its oil wealth and left feeding the nation to other hands.

"The Niger Delta has instead chosen to return to an identity older than crude itself, for the palm oil of these creeks fuelled the commerce of continents long before the first barrel was drilled. It has chosen to transform this region, feed the nation, and attract the world," he added.

Officially flagging off the Fund, the Vice President said, "This is where philosophy must give way to action. The Niger Delta Agricultural Investment Fund of 500 million dollars, which we launch today, is a commercial, returns-driven vehicle spanning the value chain, from aquaculture and palm oil to cassava, cocoa, rice, horticulture, marine resources, and livestock.

"Around it, we coordinate the commitments already pledged by the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and our private and commercial financiers.

"Above both stands the Niger Delta Agricultural Development and Investment Council, which I am honoured to chair, with the NDDC as its Secretariat. Beneath it lies a demand-side strategy preparing bankable projects across all nine mandate states."

Senator Shettima explained why on assumption of office in 2023 "President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, placed food security among the earliest priorities" of his administration, noting that the idea was driven by the understanding that "nations that lose control of their food eventually surrender control of their future.

"His July 2023 declaration of a state of emergency shifted our national approach from the boardroom to the ground, across production, market stabilisation, and food access.

"This is why mechanisation has been the centrepiece of the drive, and why the administration launched the Renewed Hope Agricultural Mechanisation Programme for 10,000 tractors over five years, alongside local assembly plants, and in parallel with the John Deere Tractorisation Programme, the Greener Hope Project, and the Green Imperative Programme," he further stated.

The outcomes, the VP continued, speak for themselves, with sustained dedication of the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, through which he said the administration has seen the prices of several essential food commodities fall, by as much as 50 per cent for some.

He implored investors, development partners, and state governors to treat the Summit "as the start of an obligation rather than the end of a ceremony," emphasising that "the fund is launched, the commitments are aligned, the council is constituted, and the pipeline awaits your conviction."

Earlier, the Minister of Regional Development, Engr Abubakar Momoh, said due to its potential for job creation and improvement in lives and livelihoods, the current administration places agriculture at the heart of Nigeria’s economic transformation.

"The national regional development policy recognises the potentials of every region not just in transforming livelihoods but in attracting investments and growth, hence the Niger Delta Agricultural Development and Investment summit is particularly significant in transforming the fortunes of youths and women across the Niger Delta," he stated.

The Minister urged the private sector, developemnt partners and other stakeholders to collaborate and work more closely with governments at all levels to achieve objectives outlined for the transformation of all regions of the country, noting that government alone would not be able to achieve full transformation of Nigeria’s economy.

In a keynote speech, the Chairman of Origin Group, Prince Samuel Joseph, said the NDDC under the administration of President Tinubu is reinvigorated and better positioned to ensure the economic transformation of the Niger Delta region and has demonstrated greater commitment to achieving set objectives.

He commended the Federal Government for its renewed commitment towards the transformation of the Niger Delta region through the various programmes and initiatives that are continously unlocking potentials and tramsforming lives and livelihoods across the region.

For his part, the Managing Director of the NDDC said the summit is not the end of a conversation but the beginning of a long-term partnership to unlock the agricultural potential of the Niger Delta.

He urged stakeholders in the region to seize the opportunities of the summit with purpose and build partnerships that endure and also mobilize investments that create jobs, strengthen food security and grow our economy.

Also, the chairman of the Governing Board of the NDDC, Mr Chiedu Ebie, said the Niger Delta cannot afford to remain a region of untapped promise, noting that the people deserve a future built on productivity, enterprise, dignity, and shared prosperity.

He said the young people deserve opportunities, farmers deserve access to finance, technology, infrastructure, and markets, and our communities deserve development that is sustainable, inclusive, and measurable.

STATEHOUSE STATEMENT

PRESIDENT TINUBU'S SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO ALHAJI GANIYU KOLAPO OSENI

Goodnight, Alhaji Kola Oseni, goodnight, my brother

It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that I received the news of Alhaji Kola Oseni's passing. Though he is no longer with us, the memories of the time we shared and the legacy he left will endure.

Alhaji Kola Oseni was a visionary administrator, an elder statesman, a progressive politician, and a trailblazer.

His inspiring leadership, vision and industry stood him apart. He was restless in his determination to do many things for our people

Kola Oseni's immense contributions, first as organising secretary of Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s Unity Party of Nigeria in Lagos in the Second Republic, laid the foundation for the establishment of the Lagos State Printing Corporation, among others, for which a central mosque in the company was recently dedicated in his name.

To me, however, he was much more than that. He was a leader, my ally, my comrade, a friend and a brother rolled into one.

He brought me into politics and stood by me along with others to become the Senator representing Lagos West and later the governor of our Lagos State.

We shared good moments and also made sacrifices for our country and our people. I can never forget all we went through together in the struggle to restore democracy in our land.

Kola Oseni was a warrior for democracy. He believed in the ideals of democracy and good governance and fought for them.

Together, we fought for the sanctity of the June 12 election won by the late Bashorun Moshood Abiola, and together, we struggled to end military dictatorship in the land.

In 2022, when I indicated interest in contesting for the presidency, Kola Oseni blessed my aspiration and offered prayers. But he could do little because by then he had relocated to America.

As President, I'm implementing some of the ideas and reforms we discussed, determined to make Nigeria better and stronger.

Thank you for your service to Lagos State. Thank you for your service to Nigeria. Thank you for being a brother and a friend and for standing by me over the years.

Indeed, a brother and a bosom friend has fallen. An Iroko among us has fallen. I give thanks to Allah that Alhaji Oseni lived well, lived to an advanced age, and left behind worthy children.

I will never forget Kola Oseni. I will never forget all that he stood for. I pray that Almighty Allah comfort and protect his immediate family, particularly the wife and children. May they have the fortitude and strength to continue from where he stopped.

As Kola Oseni's remains are laid to rest, Remi and I wish him eternal rest. May Almighty Allah grant him the best part of Aljanna.

DISCLAIMER: NDLEA ALERTS PUBLIC ON FRAUDULENT AUCTION OFFERS IMPERSONATING OFFICIALS

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has drawn attention to a fraudulent scheme orchestrated by criminal elements and scammers targeting unsuspecting members of the public.

The fraudsters have been found using the names of top NDLEA officials, most notably the Secretary to the Agency, Barrister Shadrach Haruna, to issue fake private letters and messages offering cheap forfeited vehicles for sale on auction.

The public is hereby notified that these offers are a complete scam. The Agency wishes to categorically state that these fraudulent offers are a malicious gimmick designed solely to defraud targeted individuals of their hard-earned money.

No official of the Agency has the mandate to privately offer, allocate, or sell forfeited vehicles or any other seized assets to individuals. Vehicles and other assets forfeited as proceeds of drug crimes are strictly auctioned through public processes managed by appointed, government-registered auctioneers. Any legitimate auction exercise is widely publicized in national dailies and through the Agency's official channels, in line with established legal and public procurement guidelines.

Members of the public are strongly urged to discountenance, ignore, and report any such private letters, text messages, or social media offers claiming to originate from Barrister Shadrach Haruna or any other NDLEA official.

The NDLEA remains committed to maintaining transparency and integrity in all its operations. Do not fall victim to these criminal elements. If you are approached with such fraudulent offers, please report immediately to the nearest NDLEA command or via our official communication channels.

The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, CON Festus Keyamo , received Captain Ademilola Odujinrin, the first African to fly solo around the world and one of only 120 pilots to have completed a solo circumnavigation since 1932, and his team on a courtesy visit.

The trailblazing pilot discussed his next bold mission: attempting a new Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) World Record this October by flying a homebuilt Long-EZ aircraft from the United Kingdom to Abuja, Nigeria, on an 18-hour nonstop flight.

This ambitious journey aims to set a fresh record in the FAI C-1b class (for aircraft weighing between 500 kg and 1,000 kg) and showcase the innovation, determination, and limitless potential of Nigerian aviation on the global stage.

Captain Odujinrin expressed deep gratitude for the Minister’s encouragement and support, hoping the mission will inspire the next generation of young Nigerians and Africans to dream bigger and reach higher.

Note: The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale ( FAI W O R L D ) is the world governing body for air sports and aviation records. This historic expedition places Africa and Nigeria on a very exclusive list achieved by only a small number of pilots worldwide.
