We all have a past.

Some of us grew up with things we didn't choose, experienced things we didn't deserve, or learned patterns that were handed down to us.

Understanding where those things came from can help us make sense of who we are.

But understanding is not the same as remaining trapped there.

At some point, the question changes from “Why am I like this?” to “What am I going to do with what I now understand?”

Your past may explain some of your patterns, but it doesn't have to become a permanent excuse for them.

Growth begins when awareness becomes responsibility.

You cannot rewrite where you started.

But once you understand where you came from, you can begin making different choices about where you are going.

Your past is part of your story.
It does not have to be the author of your future.

I don't analyze silence the way I used to.

Sometimes, I simply observe it.

Distance can tell you something.
Inconsistency can tell you something.
A change in effort can tell you something.

And sometimes, what someone stops doing speaks louder than what they say.

Not everything needs to be questioned.

Some things simply need to be noticed.

Everything communicates, if you are paying attention.

This made me stop and think about the difference between admiring a person and actually studying what made them who they are.

BECOMING THE BUILDING ENGINEER OF YOURSELF

Before becoming the person you want to be, create the image of that person.

Then study him.

Don’t just admire what you see. Ask what had to be built to produce that person.

What does he know that you don’t?

What discipline does he possess that you haven’t developed?

What decisions does he make differently?

What did he have to leave behind?

The image is not the destination.

It is the blueprint.

And perhaps the journey of becoming is simply the long process of learning to become the building engineer of your own life.
