AKSU Acting VC Commits to Enhancing Staff Welfare, Fostering Collaborations, and Supporting Community Service

Professor Otoabasi Akpan, the Acting Vice Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University, has made a commitment to prioritize the welfare of staff, encourage opportunities for collaboration and partnerships, and strive to cultivate a vibrant community within the University.

Prof. Akpan made the remarks at a reception organized in his honour by staff and students of the University at its main campus in Ikot Akpaden on Monday. He thanked Pastor Umo Eno for the privilege and promised to mobilize the university community to contribute positively to the realization of the Governor’s Arise Agenda.

The Don is the first indigenous professor of the institution to be appointed Vice Chancellor. He promised to create programs and policies that will improve the welfare of staff members, while building a strong and sustainable working relationship with all stakeholders.

He noted that universities globally thrive on collaborations. He said he will mobilize the university community to leverage opportunities in the local, sub-national, national and international front to develop the university in line with the vision of its forebearers.

Acknowledging that approximately 80% of the staff are resident in Uyo, the acting Vice Chancellor underscored the necessity of developing a university community. He said the community will offer vital amenities, including housing, schools, market linkages, and access to quality healthcare, to support the families of both academic and non-academic staff.

Professor Akpan said he understands the perculiar challenges of the university having spent thirteen years in various stations of the institution, and will develop framework that would help in addressing them. He prayed for cooperation from the staff members.

In separate comments, Mr. Ukeme Raphael, the Head of Human Resources, and Dr. Frank Namso, the chairperson of the Academic Staff of the Universities, expressed their delight at the appointment of Professor Akpan. They both noted that this development marks a significant milestone in the growth of the University.

Also speaking, the President of the Students’ Union Government, Comrade Elijah Ekanem, assured the acting Vice Chancellor of the unwavering cooperation and support from the student body.

The next day, I set out for Benson H0spital as soon as daylight strûck£d. I needed to get well. I needed to resume busîn£ss as soon as possible. M0néy was passing by me.

******
When I reached the h0spital, I used the contâct number Cynthia had provided me with. When I called Mr. Allington, the prîvate dóctor, luckily he pîcked up on the first try. I explained to him who I was and why I was calling. He mentioned that he was still at home and not yet at the H0spital. His residence was located in Gardeners Ville, about an hour's drive away.

I off£red to come and pîck him up, but he assuréd me that he was already on his way and advîsed me to stay and be patient for a short while. At that moment, the word 'patient' feIt partîcularly hársh. I was eager to féél better. I waited anxi0usly.

Around 45 minûtes later, Mr. Allington arrived. He was a slîm, dárk-sk!nned young man with a relaxed and approachable demeanor. He had an air of trustwôrthiness, as if he could keep a miIIion sécrèts. This is likely why he was trûsted by my colleagues who were involved in the d0g bus!n£ss. After exchânging some pleasantries, I féIt at ease ar0und him."

I told him that I had been reférrèd to him by Cynthia. Without hesitation, he called Cynthia to c0nfîrm, as the nature of his bus!n£ss was a confîdential one and he needed to ensure my legitimacy. Being new to this arrangément, verifîcation was necessary, unlike for Cynthia and others who were regular clîents.

After a brief confîrmation, he esc0rted me to his offîce. He condûcted the necessary tests, and we awaited the results. When the r£suIts were ready, I was taken ab@ck by the doctor's explanation of my c0ndîtîon.

"Ma'am, he said, as he lôôked at me straight with a mix of côncern and disb£lief. “I've reviewed your test results, and I'm afrà!d the news isn't too good.”

He reveâled that I had c0ntrácted a sevére bâcter!al inf£ction due to my constant expôsure without early tr£âtment. The bacter!a, he explained, had proliferâted throughout my b0dy and had entered my bI00dstream, a conséquence of the delay in seeking early tr£atment.

He emphasized that the bus!n£ss I was involved in demânded regular check-ups and ongoing treâtment to manage such r!sks effectively."

He said that if I had come in earlier, we could have tre@ted it with ant!bîotics, but because I deIâyed, the bâcteria had become resîstant.

“The délay in séèking tr£atment has allowed the inf£ction to spréad, making rec0very more chaIlénging.” he admitted.

The bácter!a were 'crony' in my system, and my b0dy was too w£ak to f!ght it off.

He also told me that due to the vîg0rous thru$t and int@ke of high level of sémen from those anîmals, my r£próductîve systém was at hîgh r!SK.

I was having Scábies as well, An inf£station of par@sitic mîtes, Sarcóptes scabiei, câusing int£nse îtching in prîvate areas cáus£d by the mîtes burr0wing into the skîn of humans and other anîmals. It is easily transmîssîble from human to human; secondary skin inf£ction may occur.

“Hûman to hûman?” I asked the doctor.

“Yes, it's transmissible.” he answered, tapping his fingérs on the table and looking at me as if awaiting my next question.

In my mind I was now clearly sure why when Cynthia visited me she dîdn't come that clôse to me. Since he stârted telling me my resûlts, I havén't been myseIf. I've been completed l0st and £mpty.

I was dev@stated. I couldn't believe that a few moments of fooI!shn£ss could lead to this. The doctor said that the inf£ction had caus£d irrev£rsible d@mâge to my orgáns, and there was little they could do. I'm now on a waiting list for experîm£ntal tr£atments, but the chances are sIîm.

Looking back, I wî$h I had never dône it. The thriII wasn't worth the paîn and suff£ring I'm goîng through now. I just want people to know the r!sks and to be careful. One wrong decîsion you make can change your Iîfe forever."

I sat there, stûnn£d, as the weight of Mr. Allington’s wórds sank in.

Scábies?

How c0uld this be happening?

I never thought back to my encounters with the d0gs, to meet my end nèéds, thriII and the d@nger would have been involved. Now, it seemed, that d@nger was catching up with me with0ut my knowledge.

Mr. Allington continued, his voice calm but firm. "You need to understand the sèvérity of this. Scábies can câuse s!gnifîcant heálth issu£s if left untr£ated. The mîtes burrow into y0ur skîn, causing int£nse ltchîng and, if secondary inf£ctions set in, things can get much wors£."

I nodded, trying to process everything.
"What dó I do n0w?"

He leaned forward, his eyes meeting mine. "First, you need to start tr£atment immediately.”

“Sir, I.. i.. I'm ready to pay for whatever tr£atment. I need to get weIl, pléase.” I stàmmered with c0nfûsion in my voice.”

“I'll préscribe you some topical créams and òral medications. You'll need to apply the cream all over your b0dy, paying special attention to the aff£cted areas. And you'll need to take the òral medîcation as directed. And then...."

I felt a wave of reIief wash over me. At least there was a treâtment.

"And then what?" I asked.

Mr. Allington expression tûrned sérious. "Then, you need to be extremely car£ful. Scábies is hîghly c0ntagîous. You'll need to avô!d close contáct with others until you're sure the inf£ction is cleared. And you need to be honest with anyone you've been înt!mate with recently. They'll need to be tr£ated as well."

I thought of the young men I've sIépt with. Just few days prior to when I started experiencing these compIicatîons. Had I put them at r!sk? The gu!It started to créêp in, but I pushed it aside. I needed to focus on getting b£tter.

"Is there anything else I should know?" I asked, my voice barely abôve a whîsper.

Mr. Allington nodded.

"Yes. This is a wake-up call.
The lifèstyIe you girIs are lèading, to be honest, it is dàng£rous. Not just physîcaIly, but emôtîonalIy and psycholôgically as well. You need to take a step back and reevaluate your ch0ices. This could have been much w0rse."

I left his office fééling a mix of rel!ef and dr£ad. Relief that there was a treâtment, but dr£ád at the thôught of what could have been. As I drôve home, I couldn't shàke the fééIing that this was just the beginning. The beginning of a journey to recovery, both phys!cal and sp!rîtual.

That nîght, as I applied the créam and took the medication, I made a promise to myself. I would get bètter, and I would change my Iîfe. No more r!sks, no more dang£r0us encóunters. I would find a way to héal, bôdy and sóuI.

But little did I know, my journey was far from óver. The shadows of my pâst were catching up with me, and they were hûngry for more.

They brought the D0gs to sleeep with me again that morning. This time it was not as painful as the last night. It was more easy but I felt pain.

After that they left me alone in the empty room. I was not even putting on my cl0thes, the door opened again and I was scared I thought they were bringing in the dogs for the third time. But It was Cynthia who opened the door.

Immediately I saw her I quickly felt relieved, I knew she came to pick me up.

“Dress up your self, we are leaving, your job is done.” Cynthia said and smile at me. But I was not smiling back at all, the experience I had with the dogs could not make me smile.

She took me out of the room and we went to meet the men who owned the dogs. They paid Cynthia, I saw them transfer money to her account.

“This is for your girl, my d0gs really enjoyed their time with her. We can’t wait to have her here again” one of the men said, his eyes were on me as he spoke. I just fake a smile and bent my head. I will never come here again, I said to myself.

Me and Cynthia left the big house, she took me in her car and we went straight to bank, we withdrew some money and then straight to Cynthia’s house.

We sat on the couch and she began to speak. “The man gave me 5million naira to give you.”

I got shocked at the first, five good million? Just one night with the dogs. What exactly do they do to make money ?” I asked.

Hahah ! Haha! Cynthia laughed. “See this is just the start, the more you do the more you get increase in your earnings from them.”

“No Cynthia am not doing anything anymore, I will use the five million to start a business,” said to her.

But she kept convincing me. She told me to sleeep with the dogs again. I told her no but she kept telling me that five million is not enough. And it not a new thing to me anymore.

I didn’t even know that Cynthia had never slept with the d0gs before, all she does was to bring girls to sleeep with the rich dogs while she earn her own commission. I even thought she was also into the business, I never knew she was their partner.

So she gave me the five million in cash, and then she told me to rent an apartment for myself and used the other money to set up the apartment.

I did exactly as she said. Got the apartment and set it up with bed and everything needed in a house. Through out that week poverty disappeared for a while because I was still spending from the 5 million.

The people in my neighborhood began to wonder how I suddenly changed, how I rented a new apartment. They thought I would continue to suffer after the death of my parents.

But by weekend all the money already finished in clothes and the new house I rented. I promise I would not repeat that dog business again. So I use the small money that remains to start a small shop at the front of my apartment.

But the business was not moving for me. No customer was coming to my provision store to buy anything and I was becoming poor like before.

So I had no choice than to call Cynthia again, I told myself, just one last time I would never repeat the dog business.

“I knew you would come to your senses, this is real business. Imagine making that amount of money every night, in one week you are already a multimillionaire” Cynthia says on the phone.

“I know, but I can’t keep sleeeping with dogs for my whole life, this is just the last one I will do” I said and ended the call.

“The next morning Cynthia, came and took me to the men again. There were called the dogs family.

We entered the house and she spoke with the men, “she wants to do another job” Cynthia said.

“She is here at the right time, my dogs really missed her, they Can’t wait to taste h£r again” the boss leader said. While I stood bending my head.

The house guards took me to the room where the D0gs would sleeep with me again. The guards were two, each hold gunns. They both left but one came back and opened the door. He looked at me and ask me a question. “Why did you come back to this place again ?”

“I needed money, I answered.

“You were paid five million the last time, that should be enough to create a new life for you, do you know the danger you are putting yourself?” The guard asked.

I seem not to understand why he was acting like he care.

“Do you care? And you are also working for this men, so you are no different from them” I said to him.

“Low your voice” he said. Looks back and front. “I don’t like this job am doing, I can’t even stop because they will find me, that is reason why I told you the d0g business is more dangerous than you see” the guard said and left.

I sat down there alone in fears. What the guard said was now sounding disturbing. What danger did exactly. The only thing is just to sleep with the d0gs and go, so what danger exactly, I thought.

I sat there waiting for the Dogs to come and have s£x with me. this will be my last business with them.

To be continued.

..A step towards redefining the narrative of grassroots development.

By Joel Mkpong

Itu, January 3rd, 2025 – Community development is a process where individuals and groups come together to take collective action and generate solutions to common challenges. Through strategic legislative leadership, he has redefined grassroots empowerment, fostering development, inspiring hope, and motivation to many.

One remarkable demonstration of his commitment to community development came during the 2024 Mbre Ofiong Festival, anchored by MC Ntokrok, an indigene of Itu. On December 30th, 2024, at Mbiatok Itam Village Square, Itu, Rt. Hon. KufreAbasi Edidem generously donated 100 bags of cement to support the Building Project of Mr. Ekanem Edet Udosen through the Mbre Ofiong Foundation.
