The Federal Ministry of Education has announced a new policy to reduce the cost of schooling for Nigerian families as the reform focuses on making education more affordable while improving quality in schools.
Textbooks will now be reusable and durable, lasting 4 to 6 years and disposable workbooks are banned, and books can be shared among siblings, reducing the need to buy new ones every year.
As such, publishers can no longer make minor changes just to sell new editions. Only meaningful and curriculum-based revisions will be allowed, and the number of approved textbooks per subject will be limited to improve quality.
The policy also cuts extra school expenses and graduation ceremonies are now allowed only for Primary 6, JSS3, and SSS3, and a uniform academic calendar will be used nationwide to help parents plan better.
