PORT HARCOURT, RIVERS STATE — The return to democratic rule in Rivers State began with an atmosphere of suspense as Governor Siminalayi Fubara failed to show up at the Government House, leaving a large crowd of waiting supporters disappointed. The governor and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, were scheduled to resume duties after a six-month emergency rule imposed by President Bola Tinubu.
The absence of Fubara, who had been out of the country since the emergency rule declaration, led to widespread speculation. While some feared he had been "hobbled" of his powers, sources suggested he was in Abuja holding meetings with key stakeholders before his return.
FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Fubara's predecessor, assured the public in a Channels Television interview that he had spoken with the governor and that he was ready to return. However, Wike dismissed questions about supporting Fubara for a second term as "too early."
Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly, which also resumed sitting, has called on the governor to submit the list of commissioner-nominees and the appropriation bill for screening and confirmation. The Assembly also plans to review the financial expenditures made during the emergency rule.
