NYSC Denies Withholding Corps Member’s Certificate Over Criticism of Government
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that a corps member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, was denied her Certificate of National Service (CNS) due to critical comments about the government.
In a statement posted on its official page, the scheme described the claims as “entirely unfounded,” explaining that Ms. Ushie’s certificate was withheld for “valid disciplinary reasons” unrelated to politics.
According to the NYSC, the corps member, with state code LA/24B/8325, was among 131 whose certificates were withheld over various infractions. The management stated that her service year was extended by two months after she failed to attend the April 2025 biometric clearance exercise, in accordance with NYSC bye-laws.
“This extension is a standard procedure and not unique to her case. The principle of equal treatment was applied as it is in all similar situations,” the statement read.
The scheme urged the public to assess the matter objectively and avoid politicising it, noting that sanctions for non-compliance have long been part of its operations.
“The NYSC remains committed to discharging its mandate in line with the dictates of the constitution,” the statement added, reaffirming its pledge to fairness and discipline in national service.
