Principal officers of the Uruan Local Government Legislative Council have participated in a five-day National Legislative Capacity Development Workshop for Local Government Councillors held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, from Monday, August 17 to Friday, August 21, 2026.
The workshop, themed “Strengthening Grassroots Governance: Advanced Legislative Skills for Effective Local Representation,” was designed to enhance the capacity of legislative officers in Nigeria’s Local Government Councils.
The training brought together principal officers of the legislative arms of Local Government Councils from Edo, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States. The programme focused on strengthening legislative competence, improving local representation and equipping councillors with advanced skills required for effective grassroots governance.
Representing Uruan Local Government at the workshop were the Leader of the Uruan Legislative Council, Rt. Hon. Sunday Bassey; Deputy Leader, Hon. Effiong Robert Akpan; House Leader, Hon. Anietie Okon; Deputy House Leader, Hon. Itoro Edet; Chief Whip, Hon. Etiette Okon; and Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Ifiok Effiong. Their participation underscored the council’s commitment to continuous learning, effective legislative practice and improved service to the people of Uruan.
Speaking on the significance of the workshop, the Leader of Uruan Legislative Council, Rt. Hon. Sunday Bassey, described the capacity-building initiative as an important opportunity for legislators at the grassroots to broaden their knowledge and improve their understanding of legislative responsibilities. He noted that effective local governance requires legislators who are properly equipped to make sound laws, provide quality representation and contribute meaningfully to the development of their communities.
Rt. Hon. Bassey further emphasized that grassroots governance remains closest to the people and therefore requires a strong and competent legislative arm capable of identifying the needs of the people and translating them into practical policies and legislative actions.
He said the knowledge gained from the workshop would be valuable in strengthening oversight, legislative procedures, accountability and constructive engagement between the legislative and executive arms of government.
The workshop also provided participants with an avenue to exchange experiences, share ideas and examine contemporary approaches to local government legislation and representation.
The participation of the Uruan legislative leadership is expected to further strengthen the council’s capacity to deliver effective representation and contribute to the sustainable development of Uruan Local Government.
