African Maradona, Etim Esin, Offers Stern Advice to Super Eagles Striker Victor Osimhen
By Paul Michael
In a candid and introspective interview, Nigerian football legend Etim Esin, fondly known as the "African Maradona," shared his personal experiences and offered premium advice to Super Eagles and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. Drawing from his own successes and setbacks in the 1980s, Esin emphasized the importance of discipline, humility, and focus in achieving greatness in football.
Esin, who had a storied career with the Nigerian national team, cautioned Osimhen against the dangers of indiscipline, arrogance, and poor management. He cited his own struggles with these issues and how they impacted his career, saying, "A coach can make you, a coach can break you." Esin also referenced the likes of Mario Balotelli, who he believes would have been one of the best players in the world if not for his disciplinary issues.
The legendary midfielder also expressed concerns about Osimhen's transfer saga, stating that his lack of discipline has made top clubs hesitant to sign him, despite his impressive skills. Esin noted that European coaches prioritize character and discipline when evaluating players, and Osimhen's behavior has raised red flags.
Furthermore, Esin criticized Osimhen's management team, saying they have not provided adequate guidance and support. He pointed to the examples of Nigerian football greats like Rashidi Yekini, Emmanuel Amunike, and Victor Ikpeba, who all signed direct deals without complications.
Esin concluded his advice by urging Osimhen to focus on building a lasting legacy, rather than seeking fleeting fame and fortune. He suggested that Osimhen invest in building an academy to train future stars and construct schools for underprivileged children, estimating that 1-2 million euros could fund such projects.
In a parting shot, Esin warned Osimhen that indiscipline can cost him what he least expects, emphasizing the importance of humility and hard work in achieving true greatness. As the "African Maradona," Esin's words carry weight, and Osimhen would do well to heed his advice.
