Abia Govt Begins Payment of Gratuities, Resolves Issues That Led to ABSU Strike

The Abia State Government has commenced the payment of gratuities to deserving beneficiaries across the state. It has also resolved the issues that led to the strike at Abia State University, Uturu, ABSU.

The government announced the developments on Monday, saying the actions are part of efforts to clear outstanding obligations and restore normalcy in the state’s public institutions.

According to the statement, payment of gratuities has started for pensioners and other qualified beneficiaries who have been owed for years. Officials said the process will be done in phases to ensure transparency and reach all deserving persons.

On the university front, the government said it has addressed the key demands that prompted staff unions at ABSU to down tools. With the resolution, academic and administrative activities are expected to resume fully.

Governor’s aides noted that clearing the backlog of gratuities and settling disputes in tertiary institutions align with the administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare and uninterrupted academic calendars.

The state government urged beneficiaries to cooperate with the verification process and called on ABSU staff and students to return to classes now that the issues have been addressed.

Stakeholders in the education sector have welcomed the intervention, saying it will bring stability to the university and boost morale among retirees.

‘Even Enemies Will Testify’: Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Is Tinubu’s Best Gift — Umahi

The Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, has described the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as President Bola Tinubu’s “best gift” to Nigerians, saying even critics of the administration will acknowledge its impact when completed.

Umahi made the remark during a briefing on Monday, where he gave updates on the progress of the 700km road project that will connect Lagos to Calabar, passing through nine coastal states.

“Even enemies will testify that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is the best gift President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given to this nation,” the minister said.

According to him, the highway is more than just a road project. He said it is designed to unlock economic opportunities, boost tourism, ease movement of goods and people, and open up coastal communities that have been cut off for decades.

Umahi noted that the project will feature a concrete road with a lifespan of at least 50 years, CCTV surveillance, solar lighting, and provisions for a rail line along the corridor.

He defended the project against criticisms over cost, compensation, and environmental concerns, saying due process was followed and that the long-term benefits far outweigh the initial challenges.

The minister added that the highway aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to deliver legacy infrastructure that will drive economic growth and regional integration.

The first phase of the project, a 47.7km stretch from Lagos, is already underway and has generated debate nationwide over its scope, funding model, and impact on coastal communities.

Work on other sections is expected to commence in phases as funding and approvals are finalized.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is one of the flagship projects of the Tinubu administration and has been touted by the government as a game-changer for trade, connectivity, and development along Nigeria’s coastline.

MTN Group Gets Approval to Acquire Remaining Stake in IHS Towers, Must Sell 30% of IHS Nigeria to Local Investors

MTN Group has secured regulatory approval to acquire the remaining stake in IHS Towers, one of the largest telecom tower companies in Africa.

However, as part of the deal conditions, MTN will be required to sell 30% of IHS Nigeria to local investors.

The approval paves the way for MTN to consolidate its relationship with IHS Towers, which owns and operates thousands of telecom towers across MTN’s key markets, including Nigeria, MTN’s biggest market.

Regulators tied the approval to increased local participation in the Nigerian tower company. The mandate to divest 30% to Nigerian investors is aimed at boosting indigenous ownership in critical telecom infrastructure.

IHS Towers currently operates over 16,000 towers in Nigeria and provides services to MTN and other mobile network operators.

MTN Group said it is reviewing the terms of the approval and will work with relevant stakeholders to ensure compliance while maintaining service continuity.

The deal is expected to reshape tower ownership in Nigeria and deepen local investment in the telecoms sector.

Kaduna Govt Sets Up 9-Man Committee to Negotiate with KASU ASUU, Approves N300m Earned Allowance

The Kaduna State Government has constituted a nine-member committee to negotiate with the Kaduna State University, KASU, chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities and other staff unions over their outstanding demands.

The government also approved the immediate payment of N300 million as Earned Academic Allowance to academic staff of KASU.

According to a statement from the state government on Monday, the committee was set up to interface with the unions and find lasting solutions to issues affecting the university.

The move comes amid growing concerns over industrial disputes in tertiary institutions across the country.

The N300m approved for Earned Academic Allowance is expected to address part of the backlog owed to KASU lecturers. Government said the payment will commence immediately.

Officials noted that the committee will engage ASUU-KASU and other unions to ensure industrial harmony and the uninterrupted academic calendar of the university.

The state government urged all parties to embrace dialogue in the interest of students and the development of education in the state.

Peter Obi Backs Fuel Subsidy Removal, Says Mismanagement Alone Not Reason to Bring It Back

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared his support for the removal of fuel subsidy, arguing that poor management of the proceeds is not a sufficient reason to reinstate it.

Obi made the statement while addressing issues around the country’s economy and cost of living, noting that although Nigerians are feeling the hardship, returning to subsidy would not solve the underlying problems.

According to him, the major challenge with the subsidy regime was not the policy itself but the mismanagement, leakages, and lack of transparency in how the funds were spent.

“*The issue is not whether subsidy should be there or not. The issue is, what did we do with the money?*” Obi said. “*Mismanagement of the proceeds is not enough reason to bring it back.*”

The former Anambra State governor insisted that what Nigeria needs now is accountability, proper planning, and investment of saved funds into critical sectors like health, education, and infrastructure to cushion the effects on citizens.

He added that any reform, including subsidy removal, must be followed with deliberate policies to reduce suffering and improve productivity.

The Federal Government removed fuel subsidy in May 2023, a move that led to a sharp rise in petrol prices and cost of living. The policy has continued to generate debate among political leaders, labour unions, and citizens.

Obi’s position aligns with the government’s stance that subsidy was unsustainable, but he stressed that the savings must be seen in improved public services.

IRAN WARNS VESSELS VIOLATING STRAIT OF HORMUZ PROTOCOLS FACE BLACKLIST, SEIZURE AND FINES

Iran has formally warned that vessels violating its transit protocols in the Strait of Hormuz will be blacklisted and face restrictions on future transits, including fines, seizure, detention or confiscation.

The warning was issued by Iranian maritime authorities, as tensions in the strategic waterway remain high.

According to the statement, any ship found to be in breach of Iran’s declared transit regulations in the Strait of Hormuz will be added to a blacklist.

Offending vessels and operators will subsequently face “administrative and legal measures” on future passages, which may include monetary penalties and direct action by Iranian authorities.

“The Islamic Republic will not permit violations of its maritime protocols in its territorial waters and the Strait of Hormuz,” the notice read. “Violators will be subject to fines, seizure, detention or confiscation.”

Officials did not specify which exact protocols were being referenced, but said the rules cover navigation procedures, reporting requirements, and compliance with safety and security directives in Iranian-controlled waters.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil chokepoints, with about 20% of global oil and gas shipments passing through it daily.

It lies between Iran and Oman and connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.

Previous disputes over vessel detentions and navigation rules in the strait have led to diplomatic standoffs involving Iran, the US, UK and other maritime powers.

Shipping industry groups and insurers are expected to review the new warning. No immediate response had been issued by the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet or international shipping bodies at the time of filing this report.

Analysts say the announcement signals Iran’s intent to more strictly enforce its maritime regulations amid ongoing regional tensions.
