Atiku Abubakar Knocks Babachir Lawal Over Ethnic Profiling, Calls Him “Tribal Bigot”

Abuja, June 7, 2026 — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized ex-SGF Babachir Lawal over alleged ethnic profiling, describing him as a “tribal bigot” whose comments threaten national unity.

Atiku’s reaction came Friday after Babachir made remarks that many interpreted as targeting specific ethnic groups in the ongoing debate on insecurity and political appointments. The former SGF has been vocal in criticizing the Tinubu administration’s policies in recent months.

In a statement by his media office, Atiku said Nigeria’s challenges cannot be solved through division and ethnic stereotyping.

“Rather than offer solutions, Babachir Lawal has chosen the path of ethnic profiling and incitement,” Atiku said. “His recent comments expose him as a tribal bigot who sees everything through the narrow lens of ethnicity. Nigeria deserves better.”

The 2023 PDP presidential candidate urged political leaders to avoid rhetoric that pits Nigerians against each other, especially at a time of economic hardship and security concerns. He said leaders must be held to a higher standard of speech.

Babachir Lawal, who served as Secretary to the Government of the Federation under former President Muhammadu Buhari, has not responded to Atiku’s remarks as of press time.

The exchange adds to the growing war of words between opposition figures and former APC chieftains over governance, appointments, and regional representation. Political analysts note the clash highlights deepening fault lines ahead of 2027.

Several civil society groups also condemned ethnic profiling by public figures, calling for issue-based debates instead of identity politics.

FCCPC Denies Reports of Tinubu Approving 9 New Airtime Credit Operators

Abuja, June 7, 2026 — The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, has refuted reports claiming President Bola Tinubu approved plans to open Nigeria’s airtime credit market to nine new operators.

In a statement Friday, the commission said it was neither aware of nor involved in the claims attributed to it. The reports had suggested that the presidency approved licensing of nine new companies to compete in the airtime advance/credit space, a service currently dominated by telecom operators.

“The FCCPC wishes to state categorically that it did not issue any statement, approval, or recommendation regarding the opening of the airtime credit market to nine new operators,” the commission said. “We are also not aware of any such approval by President Bola Tinubu.”

The FCCPC urged the public to disregard the reports, describing them as “false and misleading.” It added that any policy changes affecting competition in the telecommunications sector would be communicated officially through its channels and in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC.

Airtime credit services, popularly called “airtime borrowing,” allow subscribers to take loans for calls and data from their networks. The market has faced concerns over high charges and consumer protection issues in recent years.

Telecom industry watchers said the false reports likely stemmed from speculation around efforts to increase competition and reduce costs for subscribers. The NCC has not commented on the claims as of press time.

The FCCPC advised media outlets and the public to verify information from official sources before publication or circulation to avoid spreading misinformation.

“The Others Abducted Are Coming Home Soon” — Keyamo Says After Release of Ex-Minister’s Sister, Children

Abuja, June 7, 2026 — Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, has assured Nigerians that other victims still in captivity will soon be reunited with their families, following the release of the sister and children of a former minister.

Keyamo made the statement Friday while reacting to news of the freed hostages. The ex-minister’s sister and her children were among those abducted weeks ago in a high-profile kidnapping that sparked nationwide concern.

“The others abducted are coming home soon,” the minister said. “I can assure Nigerians that security agencies are working round the clock, and we are getting closer every day. The release of these ones gives us confidence.”

He commended the efforts of security forces and intelligence units for what he described as “painstaking work” that led to the latest release. Keyamo did not give details on the circumstances of the release or the number of victims still being held, citing security reasons.

The abduction of the former minister’s relatives had drawn widespread condemnation, with calls for stronger action against kidnapping gangs targeting prominent families. The case also heightened public pressure on government to improve safety on highways and in rural communities.

Families of the remaining captives have expressed relief at Keyamo’s assurance, while urging authorities to sustain the momentum until everyone is freed.

Security agencies have intensified operations in forests and border areas believed to be hideouts for the abductors. The federal government has reiterated that it will not pay ransom, but is focused on rescue and prosecution of the criminals.

Nigerian Air Force Vows Safe Rescue of Abducted Oyo Schoolchildren and Teachers

Abuja, June 6, 2026 — The Nigerian Air Force has pledged to carry out a safe and swift rescue operation for schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State, assuring families and the public that all air assets are being deployed for the mission.

The assurance came Friday from NAF spokesperson Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, who said surveillance and intelligence-gathering operations are already underway in the affected areas.

“We are working closely with ground forces and other security agencies to secure the safe release of all abducted pupils and their teachers,” he stated. “The safety of the victims remains our top priority, and we will not rest until they are reunited with their families.”

The abduction occurred earlier this week when gunmen stormed a school in a rural part of Oyo State, taking an unspecified number of children and staff into the forest. Details on the exact number of victims have not been released by authorities to avoid jeopardizing rescue efforts.

The Air Force said it has activated Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, ISR, aircraft, helicopters, and special operations units to track the kidnappers and secure the victims without casualties.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde also condemned the attack and promised support for security agencies. Parents and community leaders have appealed for prayers and cooperation as the operation continues.

The NAF urged residents in surrounding communities to provide credible information that could help locate the victims, but warned against spreading unverified details online that could endanger lives.

This is the latest in a series of school abductions that have prompted increased air patrols and joint operations across Nigeria’s North-Central and Southwest regions.

Nkem Owoh Says Acting Career Was “An Accident” He Was Pressured Into

Lagos, June 7, 2026— Legendary Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh, popularly known as “Osuofia,” has revealed that his journey into acting was never planned and came only after pressure from people around him.

The veteran star, famous for his comic role as Osuofia in the 2003 blockbuster Osuofia in London, made the disclosure in a recent interview. He said acting was not his first career choice and he initially resisted entering the industry.

“I never planned to be an actor. It was an accident,” Owoh said. “People kept pushing me, saying I had the talent and the look. I was pressurized into it, but I’m grateful today.”

The 67-year-old actor began his career in the late 1980s, rising to fame with his distinctive voice, comic timing, and ability to blend Igbo proverbs with humor. Osuofia in London remains one of Nollywood’s most-watched films and cemented his status as a household name across Africa.

Owoh said if he had followed his original path, he likely would not have become the star millions know today. He credited mentors, directors, and fans for convincing him to stay in the industry despite his early doubts.

Fans online reacted with surprise and nostalgia, with many saying his “accidental” entry into acting was one of Nollywood’s best blessings. Colleagues also praised his resilience and contribution to putting Nigerian comedy on the global map.

With over three decades in film, Nkem Owoh continues to act, produce, and perform music. He said he now sees his career as destiny, even though it started under pressure.

FBI Offers $150,000 Bounty for Tips on Wanted Fraudster Accused of Stealing $1.2 Billion

Washington, June 6, 2026 — The FBI has announced a $150,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a wanted fraudster accused of orchestrating a $1.2 billion financial scheme.

The bureau said Friday the suspect is wanted for allegedly carrying out one of the largest fraud cases in recent U.S. history. Details of the alleged scheme, including the suspect’s name and nationality, were not released pending ongoing investigations and pending charges.

Officials said the fraud involved complex financial transactions that targeted investors, financial institutions, and businesses across multiple states. The FBI described the case as a major threat to economic security and public trust.

The $150,000 bounty is being offered through the FBI’s “Most Wanted” program. Tips can be submitted anonymously through the FBI website at http://tips.fbi.gov, by phone, or through local FBI field offices worldwide.

“Someone knows where this individual is hiding,” an FBI spokesperson said. “That tip could be worth $150,000 and, more importantly, help bring justice for the victims.”

The agency is working with international law enforcement partners, as investigators believe the suspect may have fled abroad to avoid prosecution.

Anyone with information is urged to contact authorities and not attempt to apprehend the suspect themselves, officials warned.

The FBI said the reward amount reflects the scale of the alleged crime and the urgency of locating the suspect.

Ooni of Ife Urges Yoruba Monarchs to Deploy Traditional Means Against Banditry

Ile-Ife, Osun, June 7, 2026 — The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has called on Yoruba monarchs across the Southwest to deploy traditional institutions and indigenous security measures to combat the rising threat of banditry and kidnapping.

Speaking during a meeting of traditional rulers in Ile-Ife on Friday, the Ooni said conventional security alone has not been enough to curb attacks on rural communities, farmlands, and highways.

“Our palaces are not just cultural centers, they are the first line of defense for our people,” Oba Ogunwusi stated. “We must activate our traditional intelligence networks, community vigilance groups, and age-long conflict resolution methods to protect our land.”

The monarch urged fellow Obas and Baales to work closely with local hunters, vigilantes, and community leaders, while also strengthening collaboration with police and other formal security agencies. He stressed that traditional rulers have deep knowledge of their domains and can identify suspicious movements faster than outsiders.

Oba Ogunwusi also called on youths to resist recruitment by criminal gangs and instead support community watch initiatives. He said traditional oaths and sanctions, when used responsibly, can serve as deterrents against those aiding or harboring bandits.

The call comes amid growing concern over armed attacks and abductions in parts of Osun, Oyo, Ondo, and Ogun states. Governors in the Southwest have already set up the Amotekun security network, but the Ooni said more grassroots, culture-driven action is needed.

Several monarchs at the meeting pledged to mobilize their communities and revive traditional security structures. They appealed to federal and state governments to give legal backing and resources to palace-led security efforts.

The Ooni concluded by praying for peace across Yorubaland and urging unity among traditional institutions to preserve the region’s safety and heritage.

Federal High Court Declares N110bn NASS Vehicle, Allowance Scheme Unlawful

Lagos, June 6, 2026— The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has declared unlawful the National Assembly’s controversial N110 billion vehicle and allowance scheme, ruling that the expenditure breached procurement laws, constitutional obligations, and public trust.

In its judgment Friday, the court faulted the allocation of N40 billion for the purchase of 465 vehicles for lawmakers and N70 billion as “support allowances” for newly elected members.

The judge held that the spending violated Nigeria’s Public Procurement Act and constitutional provisions on accountability and prudent management of public funds. The court also said the scheme undermined public trust, given Nigeria’s current economic challenges.

“This expenditure failed the test of transparency, competitiveness, and due process required under procurement laws,” the court ruled. It described the allowances as lacking clear legal basis and constitutional backing.

The case was filed by civil society groups challenging the NASS leadership’s approval of the funds shortly after the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly. Lawmakers had defended the allocations as necessary for legislative duties and constituency outreach.

The court did not order immediate recovery of the funds but declared the approval and disbursement process unlawful, setting a precedent for future legislative spending.

Reactions have trailed the judgment. Transparency advocates and budget monitoring groups hailed the ruling as a win for accountability. Some lawmakers, however, argued the court was overreaching into internal affairs of the National Assembly.

The National Assembly has not announced whether it will appeal the decision. The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Finance, said it will study the judgment before taking further action.

The ruling adds to growing public scrutiny of legislative spending at a time when the government is pushing austerity measures and subsidy reforms.
