President Bola Tinubu has joined other Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in an extraordinary virtual summit convened to address the political crisis in Guinea-Bissau, following a coup in the country.

The emergency meeting, held via Zoom, brought together West African leaders in a rapid diplomatic response to the unfolding situation.

Meanwhile, the Guinea-Bissau military, which seized power on Wednesday after arresting President Umaro Embalo, has announced General Horta Nta Na Man as the head of a transitional government for one year.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu was Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government for two consecutive terms until June 2025, when he handed leadership over to the Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio. According to report, ECOWAS has been grappling with a resurgence of coups across the region in recent years, and Yesterday’s emergency summit signalled the bloc’s resolve to prevent further destabilisation.

The Federal Government has initiated the process to upgrade Victor Attah Airport in Uyo to international status, which will enable it to receive and process international passengers.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, stated this when he hosted the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, in Abuja.

Keyamo stated that the airport has all the standard Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul (MRO), and a runway of over three kilometres, which can accommodate bigger aircraft.

The governor, while commending the federal government and the minister for the approval, noted that the airport is equipped for international operations, stressing that the state government will construct a cargo terminal and residential buildings for the staff of the airport.
