Public sector unions under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council, JNPSNC, have directed federal, state and local government workers nationwide to begin a three-day warning strike from today, over demands for measures to address the economic hardship confronting workers and other Nigerians.

The council had demanded a reduction in the price of petrol to 500 naira per litre, an immediate wage award and the commencement of negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027. It said the decision to proceed with the strike followed the Federal Government’s failure to address the demands before the October 1 Independence Day address.

The Federal Government has unveiled a two-pronged Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, intervention aimed at reducing transport costs for university students, lecturers and other workers across the country.

Under the initiative, the government will subsidise the conversion of vehicles owned by lecturers and other university workers to CNG, while deploying 100 CNG-powered buses to 20 public universities.

The initiative, known as Project SPROUT, is being implemented through the Presidential Initiative on CNG Electric Vehicles. The Chief Operating Officer of the initiative, Tosin Coker, said the programme is part of efforts to fulfil the Federal Government’s commitment to reducing transport costs following its 2024 agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The first phase of the nationwide rollout covers 12 federal universities, with the programme expected to eventually reach 20 institutions, while the rollout will continue in Kano on October 5 before extending to other participating universities.
