SIR VICTOR ANTAI OFFSETS MEDICAL BILLS, RESTORES HOPE TO STRANDED PATIENTS AT ST. LUKE HOSPITAL, UYO
Uyo, Akwa Ibom State โ Relief and renewed hope swept through St. Luke Hospital, Anua, Uyo, earlier today, Tuesday, May 5, 2026, as the Executive Director, Projects, Niger Delta Development Commission NDDC, Sir Victor Antai, KJW, PhD, stepped in to clear outstanding medical bills for patients who had remained stranded despite being certified fit for discharge.
The intervention, which immediately transformed the atmosphere within the hospital, drew smiles, tears of joy, and heartfelt gratitude from beneficiaries who had, in some cases, spent days and even weeks waiting helplessly due to their inability to settle accumulated medical costs.
Sir Antai undertook a comprehensive tour of the facility, visiting key sections including the Childrenโs Ward, Male Surgical Ward, and Female Medical Ward. At each ward, he interacted personally with patients, listening to their experiences and identifying those whose continued stay was due solely to financial challenges.
Accompanying him on the visit, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Isaac Njoku, guided him round the wards and highlighted the operational realities faced by the facility. He noted that cases of patients unable to leave after treatment due to unpaid bills remain a recurring challenge.
Describing the intervention as timely and impactful, Dr. Njoku expressed deep appreciation, stating that it would significantly benefit both patients and the hospital system.
โThis intervention goes beyond financial assistance; it restores dignity and hope to patients who have endured not just illness, but emotional and psychological strain due to prolonged stay,โ he said.
โIt also helps to decongest our wards and creates space for other patients in urgent need of care. We are sincerely grateful for this compassionate gesture.โ
Beneficiaries of the intervention were visibly overwhelmed with emotion. Many expressed profound gratitude, offering prayers and words of appreciation to Sir Antai for what they described as a life changing act of kindness.
While interacting with patients, Sir Antai offered words of encouragement and hope, reassuring them of better days ahead.
โYou are not alone in this journey. Your health matters, your lives matter, and there is always hope,โ he said.
โFor those whose bills have been cleared today, I want you to know that you will be reunited with your families and loved ones. You are going home today.โ
He further prayed for the speedy recovery of those still receiving treatment, emphasizing the importance of faith, resilience, and community support in the healing process.
Beyond settling their medical bills, Sir Victor Antai also provided take home support packages to beneficiaries to assist them as they transition back to their homes and normal lives.
The NDDC Executive Director also took time to celebrate nurses on duty, commending their dedication, compassion, and professionalism in the discharge of their responsibilities.
โYou are the backbone of our healthcare system,โ he told the nurses.
โYour sacrifices, your patience, and your commitment to saving lives do not go unnoticed. I celebrate you and thank you for all that you do for humanity.โ
Reflecting on a personal connection, Sir Antai shared that his father was a nurse who served at the General Hospital, Ituk Mbang, in Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, noting that this background has shaped his deep respect for the nursing profession.
The visit coincided with the commencement of the 2026 Nursing Week beginning May 6 and also aligned with the global observance of World Asthma Day, reinforcing the importance of accessible healthcare and increased awareness of respiratory health.
The outreach was carried out in support of the Rise and Bloom Humanity Foundation, an initiative championed by his wife, focused on improving lives through healthcare support, humanitarian services, and community based interventions.
For many of the beneficiaries at St. Luke Hospital, the visit will remain unforgettable, not just as an official engagement, but as a defining moment that restored their freedom, renewed their hope, and reaffirmed the power of compassion in leadership.
