In a landmark step toward addressing Nigeriaโ€™s escalating security challenges, the House of Representatives on Thursday overwhelmingly approved the State Police Bill, paving the way for the decentralisation of the nationโ€™s policing system.

The decision was reached during plenary presided over by Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, with 289 lawmakers voting in support of the proposal.

The approval comes amid growing concerns over persistent insecurity across the country, including rising cases of killings, kidnappings, armed banditry, and other violent crimes. The House had earlier resolved to dedicate Thursdayโ€™s sitting to deliberations and voting on the bill as part of efforts to strengthen security governance at the sub-national level.

However, proceedings were briefly disrupted by objections from some lawmakers regarding the timing of the circulation of the constitutional amendment document.

Representing a constituency in Kaduna State, Bashir Zubairu raised a point of order, arguing that members had insufficient time to study the report prepared by the House Committee on Constitution Review before voting.

According to him, the document was only made available to lawmakers shortly before the commencement of plenary, making it difficult for members to adequately scrutinise its contents.

Despite the objection, the Speaker ruled the lawmaker out of order and directed that the legislative process continue.

As deliberations progressed, several members were heard raising points of order, but the presiding officer proceeded with the consideration of the billโ€™s provisions.

Before voting commenced, Speaker Abbas informed members that the electronic voting system was experiencing technical difficulties. Consequently, the House adopted a manual voting process based on attendance records.

Of the 290 lawmakers present during the exercise, 289 voted in favour of the State Police Bill, while only one member voted against it. The Speaker abstained from voting.

The overwhelming endorsement marks one of the most significant constitutional reform efforts in recent years and signals strong legislative support for the creation of state controlled police formations aimed at enhancing grassroots security and improving response to local threats across the federation.

If eventually adopted through the constitutional amendment process, the State Police framework is expected to fundamentally transform Nigeriaโ€™s security architecture by granting states greater authority and responsibility in maintaining law and order within their jurisdictions.

Akwa Ibom State on Monday, June 1, 2026, commenced a spiritually uplifting three-day Prayer Summit to usher in the fourth year of the administration of Governor Umo Eno, with a resounding call for thanksgiving, consecration, and renewed dependence on Godโ€™s guidance for greater accomplishments ahead.

The summit, themed โ€œThe God of Awesome Wondersโ€ (Joshua 3:5), was conceived as a solemn yet celebratory gathering to appreciate God for His faithfulness throughout the administrationโ€™s first three years and to dedicate the fourth year to His divine direction and favour.

The event, which was attended by Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, the Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi; the Coordinator Office of the First Lady, Noble Lady Helen Eno Obareki; the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong, and other top government functionaries, was held at the International Christian Worship Centre (ICWC) and drew a large congregation of clergy and citizens who gathered in thanksgiving and prayer for the continued peace, unity, progress, and prosperity of Akwa Ibom State.

Delivering a stirring message on the theme, โ€œGod of Awesome Wonders,โ€ the General Overseer of First Love Assembly, Pastor Simeon Afolabi, declared that those who understand and follow Godโ€™s ways will continually experience extraordinary manifestations of His power and grace.

Drawing inspiration from John 2:1โ€“11, the biblical account of Jesus turning water into wine at Cana, Pastor Afolabi outlined four key principles that unlock divine wonders, emphasizing unwavering faith, obedience, sensitivity to Godโ€™s voice, and complete trust in His word.

He further linked the message to the leadership of Governor Umo Eno, stressing that divine guidance remains indispensable for transformational governance, sustainable development, and impactful leadership. According to him, when leaders and citizens align with Godโ€™s purpose, remarkable progress becomes inevitable.

In a moment of deep spiritual significance, the cleric offered prophetic prayers and declarations over the state and the administration, invoking divine wisdom, greater achievements, protection, and unprecedented breakthroughs as the government enters its fourth year.

The atmosphere was further enriched by powerful song ministrations, heartfelt thanksgiving sessions, vibrant praise and worship, and fervent intercessory prayers that stirred hope and renewed faith among participants.

The Prayer Summit continues on June 2 and 3, 2026, with expectations high for deeper encounters, divine revelations, and fresh blessings as Akwa Ibom collectively seeks Godโ€™s face for the future
