RIVERS ASSEMBLY PASSES 3 BILLS, ADJOURNS SINE DIE

In furtherance of one of its tripod functions, the Rivers State House of Assembly, on Friday, at its 136th Legislative Sitting, passed three Bills, which will be forwarded to His Excellency, the Governor for assent.

Debating on the Reports of the various Committees for the three Bills, which were the Rivers State House of Assembly (Powers and Privileges) Bill, 2025, a Bill that seeks to grant the House powers, privileges and immunity to perform its Legislative duties; the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) Bill, 2025, which seeks to repeal the existing State Electoral Law of 2018, and to re- enact a new one to provide for the establishment, Composition and functions of the Commission in line with the Electoral Act of 2022 and the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; and the Rivers State Local Government Bill, 2025, which seeks to repeal the State's Local Government Laws of 2018, 2023 and 2024, and to re- enact a new Local Government Law that will be in sync with contemporary Laws in the administration of the Local Government Councils, Members maintained that the Bills when passed, the State will be well placed in the comity of States in those areas covered by the Bills.

Remarking on the Reports, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, stated that what the House is simply doing is the domestication of the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act of 2017 that gave certain powers and privileges to the Legislature in the performance of its function.
Rt. Hon. Amaewhule averred that the RSIEC Bill is very crucial, given the need to be in tandem with the Electoral Act and the Constitution. Similarly, the Speaker harped on the importance of making the Local Government Law reflect certain constitutional provisions, adding that the Rivers State House of Assembly will continue to perform its Legislative duties in the best interest of the people.

Here we shall examine ourselves if we are still in faith as we seat under the feet of Jesus Christ to learn of Him. We shall bring up some challenges facing individuals, the church, and the nation with the intent of finding and providing solution to them as we make our common supplication believing in the powers of individuals and cooperate prayer.
Here, we will intercede for ourselves, our families, the church, our nation, and our rulers for "thus far the Lord has helped us". we believe this program will record many testimonies.

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT TINUBU SWEARS IN JUSTICE KEKERE-EKUN AS ACTING CHIEF JUSTICE OF NIGERIA, SAYS INDEPENDENCE OF JUDICIARY CRITICAL FOR PRESERVING SOCIAL ORDER, PEACE AND SECURITY

President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday administered oath of office on Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), pending her confirmation by the Senate.

The swearing-in of the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria and the second female justice to hold the office took place at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja.

In his remarks, President Tinubu urged the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria to defend the independence of the judiciary and promote the cause of justice.

The President emphasized the importance of strengthening mechanisms that will uphold and enhance integrity, discipline, and transparency in the judiciary.

''Undoubtedly, the position of the Chief Justice of Nigeria comes with enormous responsibilities as the head of all judicial institutions in the country. It is a position of considerable influence that demands temperance and sobriety.

''The occupant of the office must exude the highest level of integrity in the discharge of their duties. This is more so because of the finality of the Supreme Court's judgments.

''I, therefore, urge your Lordship to be faithful and loyal to the Constitution when discharging your duty as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.

''I also encourage you to defend the judiciary's independence and always promote the cause of justice. It is vital that you strengthen all mechanisms for integrity, discipline, and transparency in the judicial sector, and pursue other reforms or initiatives to sustain and build public confidence in the judiciary,'' the President stated.

President Tinubu also lauded the contributions of Justice Kekere-Ekun to the judiciary, noting that she is coming to the position with an admirable family and professional pedigree.

BREAKING NEWS:

NATIONAL ASSEMBLY GRANTS FULL AUTONOMY TO THE 774 LOCAL GOVERNMENTS OF NIGERIA AS INEC IS NOW TO CONDUCT LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS...

"The National Assembly on Tuesday, granted full financial and administrative autonomy to all the 774 local council authorities across Nigeria by amending section 124 of the nation’s constitution.

The section provides a consequential provision for the making of the local councils, a full third tier government without undue interference from the state governments.

The ammendment was one of the 22 others approved by the House of Representatives last week and ratified by the Senate on Tuesday.

Both chambers had through a conference committee harmonised versions of the ammendments into the constitution carried out by each of them last month.

By the development, the National Assembly had ratified all the 23 clauses and sections that had been ammended by both chambers.

The newly ammended document which would be sent to States Houses of Assembly, for approval, also approved the creation of the Office of Auditor General of the Local Government as well as the State Local Government Service Commission.

The section equally deleted the State
Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) from the constitution thereby vesting the powers to conduct council elections on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

It however, retained the immunity clause in the constitution for the President and Governors by adopting the Senate version of the ammendments on the issue and rejected the House of Representatives version which removed the immunity clause.

The National Assembly also made provisions for Independent Candidacy in future elections in Nigeria by amending sections 65 and 106 of the 1999 constitution..."
