The Widow

Day One

“You killed your husband? You killed our brother and you think you will go scot-free? We are going to deal with you so that in your next world, when you have the opportunity to get married, you will not think of killing your man. You are a witch and you will regret what you did to our Ike.” Ajuka tells Simisola who was weeping profusely in the living room during the family meeting.

Her husband died a week ago and the family called a meeting to talk about the burial. However, what Simisola thought was a family meeting turned into a blame game. Her husband’s brothers turned against her, blaming her for his death. Her husband, Ike died of natural causes as confirmed by an autopsy conducted after he suddenly slumped and passed on. But his brothers called this a cock-and-bull-story and decided to hold his wife responsible for his death.

“I did not kill my husband. How can I kill the man who married me and took me away from my husband’s house? I’m mourning my husband, my loving hubby and all you people can do is to pin his death on me? I think this is highly insensitive and wicked. How can I kill Ike, my loving husband? Please, you people should stop tormenting me like this.” Simisola said to her in-laws who refused to listen to her pleas. Her response even made them more furious.

“Are you calling us liars? Are you saying all the elders here are telling lies? You must be really out of your mind. You are highly disrespectful and we will not tolerate this insolence from you. All we know is that you killed your husband and you must face the consequences of your actions. He that brings in ant-infested maggot should not complain when the lizards come calling. You beat the drum for your husband’s death, and now is the time to face the music. You are an unrepentant witch but I will show you that I’m a wizard.” Ajuka, Ike’s eldest brother said. He was the one spearheading the accusations against Simisila. Ajuka never liked Simisola for once. When Ike wanted to marry Simi, most of the family members rejected her because of her tribe. She is from the Yoruba tribe while her husband was Igbo. They insisted that she is a witch sent to kill their brother.

“I did not kill my husband. I want to be left alone to mourn him in peace.” Simi said, but her comment was interrupted by Ajuka who stood up and landed her a slap on her face.

“You slapped me? What did I ever do to you? I have been a good wife to your brother. The hospital confirmed that he died of natural causes and now, you are accusing me of killing him? Why did you slap me? I do not deserve this treatment. If my husband were to be alive, he would have fought for me, but I leave you in the hands of God.” Simi said with hot tears dropping from her eyes. The slap was so hot that she saw stars.

“Shut up your mouth. I warned my brother when he wanted to get married to you. I warned him that he was getting married to a woman who would kill him, but he never listened to elderly counsel. Now, what I predicted has come to pass. You have killed him and you want us to leave you to enjoy his wealth? That is not going to happen. Your plan was to eliminate him and take all his properties, but you have failed. You only succeeded in killing him, but none of his properties will be yours. And to make myself clear, you must tell us what happened to our brother. You killed him with your witchcraft.” Ajuka said threateningly, looking directly into the eyes of Simi.

“Oh! My dear husband Ike, why did you die and leave me alone in this wicked world? Why did you die? I did not expect you to die at the time you died. Now, I’m left alone here to take all manner of ill-treatments and insults from your brother. If you were here, I know you would have fought for me.” Simi said tearfully. She was crying profusely, but Ajuka did not stop to threaten her.

“Stop shedding crocodile tears. That is all witches and wizards to. When they have succeeded in killing someone, they will now attend his burial to cry and eat free food. But I promise you, you will pay fully for killing my younger brother, Ike.” Ajuka threatened.

“What did I ever do to you Ajuka? Why did you hate me so much? Since I came into this family, you have been a torn on my flesh. Can you tell me one offence I ever committed against you?” Simi asked out of acute frustration.

“You killed my brother with witchcraft so that you will take over his properties. You know he is very rich. That is even why you have refused to give him children. You don’t want to give birth for him. You were married to my brother for five years and you did not conceive. Are you not a witch? Now, you must account for the death of my brother. I’m holding you directly responsible. And to be clear, you will not inherit any of his properties.” Ajuka said. He was still facing Simi who recoiled into her shell like a snail touched with fire. She has become very scared as she seems to be alone like a lamb in the midst of tigers. But she remained courageous.

“My husband willed all his properties to me. He wrote his will before he died. There is no way I’m allowing you take what rightfully belong to me.” Simi said.

“Will you shut that your dirty mouth. You did not bear a child for our brother, so you have no rights to his money.” Ajuka said.

“It was not my fault that I did not give birth to children. I’m not God and you are not God too. It is God that gives children. I’m not allowing you to take anything belong to my late husband. I’m the rightful owner. I will fight all of you.” Simi said.

“You are telling lies. You used your witchcraft to eat all the children in your womb. How can you give birth? Well, I do not have any other thing to say. Just prepare yourself for the burial. On the day of the burial, you will be required to drink water used to bathe him. If you drink this water and nothing happens to you, we will know that you did not kill him. But I’m sure something will happen to you because you actually killed him. So, be prepared.” Ajuka barked as he and other relatives left the living room angrily.

“I’m not drinking any water. I did not kill my husband. Jealous people, I will fight you to the end.” Simi kept shouting as Ajuka and his companions left the room.

“We shall see.” Ajuka said, turning one more time before exiting the sitting room.

Watch out for Day 2.

The Private Driver (The Last Part)

“The time is 6:30 am and you are already in Nigeria. How come? Did you use private jet? You arrived so early. I called you around 4 am and by 6:30 am, you are already in Nigeria. How come you are arrived with such alarming speed?” Dami asked her husband as soon as he stepped into the hospital ward.

“I started coming as soon as you called me. I did not want to waste any time. I wanted to rush home so I can see the face of my baby boy. You are my queen and I have not seen you for a long time. I started rushing to the airport the moment your call came in. Please, where is the baby? I can’t wait to see him.” Ojo said, his eyes darting from one corner of the room to the other, trying to find where the newborn is kept. When he could not see any baby, he stopped searching and returned to the bedside where Dami was. She was sitting up and leaning on the wall.

“You haven’t answered my question. How come you arrived in Nigeria so early? A flight from London to Nigeria is at least six hours. How come you arrived in less than three hours? Even if you used your own private jet, it is impossible for you to make it to Nigeria that fast. So, tell me, where did you fly from?” Dami continued asking, refusing to allow Ojo a moment of respite.

“Why are you asking me such a question? Don’t you trust me? I told you I flew in from London as soon as your call came in. Why do you not believe me? You think I’m telling lies? I just landed in Abuja and I picked another flight to Benin. You should be happy that I arrived very early to see our baby. Why are you sounding as if you are suspecting me of doing something wrong? My love please stop, I’m only hear to see our baby and to celebrate.” Ojo said as he came closer and hugged his wife for the first time since he entered the hospital ward.

“You are not going to see the baby until you have told me where you are coming from. Were you actually in London? Where were you when you received my call this morning? I don’t think you were in London because a flight from London to Nigeria is six hours. It’s less than four hours after I called you and you are already in Benin City. Where are you coming from?” Dami asked again, this time with a forceful voice that made Ojo realize that she was very serious.

“I just told you I flew in from London. Why do you doubt me?” Ojo asked.

“You did not fly in from London. Tell her the truth.” Mimi said after she rushed into the hospital ward unannounced. She was standing hands akimbo, looking directly into the eyes of Ojo who was shocked by the latest turn of events.

“Will you get out from this place at once? May I remind you that you are the housemaid and you have no right to join when I’m having a conversation with my wife. Leave this place at once before I pour my anger on you.” Ojo said angrily but Mimi called his bluff.

“My dear, you cannot do anything! Go ahead and tell your wife the whole truth about where you are coming from. You and I know you did not fly into Nigeria from London. Tell your wife where your mother kept you after this plan was hatched. I was there when it was decided, so don’t even try to tell lies.” Mimi replied with her eyes still directly fixed at Ojo who was surprised as to why she was attacking instead of defending him.

“Honey, don’t listen to this lady. She is telling lies against me. Don’t listen to her. I have told you I just flew in from London and that’s the whole truth.” Ojo kept defending himself, but it was not working at all. Just then, Kenny walked into the hospital ward.

“You did not fly into Nigeria from anywhere. Ojo, be a man and tell your wife the truth. Stop the lies because you and your mother have reached the end of the road.” Kenny said with his hands in his pocket. He was leaning on the wall and showing an ‘I-don’t-care attitude. It was then that Ojo realized that the staff employed by his mother had turned against him. He turned towards the door and saw his mother also walking into the room.

“I’m sorry son. What we planned nearly worked but things didn’t turn out the way we wanted. I’m afraid we all have to confess the truth. We lost the baby, so no need to hide anything anymore. You can go ahead and tell her the truth.” Mrs Temi said after she walked into the room and held her son by the shoulder.

“Alright! I’m all ears. What is the truth?” Dami asked calmly.

“Alright! I guess I have come to the end of the road. It’s true; I did not fly in from London. I did not even travel to London. I have been here in Benin all these while. I did not gain admission to any university in London. I just used that as an excuse to get away from you.” Ojo said.

“Why would you want to get away from me? I’m your wife. The wife of your youth. You chose to abandon me on the day of our wedding under the guise that you were going to study in London? Why did you do that?” Dami asked. She was so upset that even her mouth was shaking as she was talking.

“I’m sorry Dami. My mother put me through this journey with you. The truth is that my system is not capable of browsing your website. It is a problem I have had since I became old enough to be called a man. I did not want to get married, but my mother wanted a grandchild desperately so she planned this whole thing. The driver, Kenny was hired to do the job. I knew you were going to feel lonely and go to him in my absence. Even if you did not go to him, he would have come to you anyway. It was all planned by my mother. I was too ashamed to stay around and watch another man plant a seed in my wife’s farm. That was why I had to practically run away. I’m sorry! Please forgive me.” Ojo pleaded with Dami.

“Forgive you? After you planned to ruin my life? You knew you cannot browse a website but you still went into a relationship with me and even convinced me to marry you. Don’t you think that your heart is evil? And now, you are asking me to forgive you?” Dami exploded in anger.

“Please, forgive us. Look at me as a mother and forgive us. I only needed a grandchild, whichever way I could get it. Look at my son’s age. He is over 40 years old with no wife, no child. It breaks my heart the situation he is in. That is why I planned this. Believe me, I never planned to harm you. I just wanted a baby from you, that’s all.” Mrs Temi was kneeling down as she begged Dami for her pardon.

“Please forgive us too.” Kenny and Ojo said almost at the same time.

“Please, I need some time to think. My head is full and I can no longer process information correctly.” Dani said as she stood up from the bed and walked out. She was feeling some pains but she never turned back. As she walked out of the door, she also walked out of the marriage and never returned.

“There was no marriage anyway. It was based on lies.” Dami told herself six months later when she had recovered a bit from the shock.

“I was not wise. This is why it is good to check the health status of the person you want to marry before proceeding. If I had gone to the hospital with Ojo, doctors would have found out and told me his problem. But I’m now wiser. This kind of thing will never happen to me again.” Dami said to herself.

THE END.
