IKONO IBOM ZONAL FOOTBALL:
Stakeholders laud initiative, sue for sustainable peace.
As the Ikono Ibom Zonal football tournament inches closer, the Leadership of the Ikono Ibom development union represented by the Director of Sports, Uwem Andrew has undertaken sensitization tours and advocacy visits to prominent leaders and stakeholders of the clan.
During the visit, the IIDU briefed their hosts about the progress in the competition which is aimed at unifying communites in the clan while also serving as a platform for talent discovery.
Accompanied by the Development union's Director, Media and External Communications, Dr. Charles Bassey the leaders and stakeholders visited were presented customized jerseys branded with their names and the official logo of the Zonal football tournament to be held from 30th November to December 19th.
The Hon. Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Anieti Udofia, despite his busy schedule at the Christmas village where he was engrossed with supervision of the event areena, recicived the members of the LOC lead by the Director of Sports.
While receiving his customized jersey, the Commissioner commended the efforts of the LOC and wished them a successful outing.
On his part, the secretary of Uyo Local Government Council, Hon. Ubobgabsi Udofia praised the Evangelist Mike Essien led Ikono Ibom Development union for the initiative of organizing a football competition which he noted would galvanize the people of the clan in unity. He ceased the occasion to admonish the members of the clan to promote and sustain unity adding that with a strong spirit of unity, development would not elude the clan. He also pledged his support to the success of the Zonal football competition.
Others who were also visited included Engr. Bassey Nsentip who was also presented with the competition's custimized jersey.
The zonal football competition will feature all the 18 villages of the clan (across ward 8 and 9) grouped in 6 zones comprising 3 villages each.
The opening match which takes place on the 30th of November by 4pm at the sports grounds of secondary Commercial school, Ikot Oku, Ikono, will feature zone B, ward 8 locking horns with zone B of ward 9.
Analylist have tagged the opening match as the " *clash of the Titans"* , as Zone B in ward 8 is the zone of the member Representing Uyo state constituency at the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly, Hon. Uwemedimo Asuquo, while the Hon. Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Anieti Udofia is from zone B of ward 9.
The competition promises to be an exciting event, with several dignitaries expected to attend, including government officials, traditional rulers, and sports enthusiasts.
Earlier at the weekend, draws were held.
In the draws made public for competition to be played on league basis, zone B, ward 8 will with knock horns with Zone B ward 9 in the opening match of the competition to be held on the 30th of November, 2025 at the sports grounds of secondary school, Ikot Oku Ikono by 4pm.
