LABOUR UNIONS PUSH FOR 120% SALARY INCREASE TO ₦154,000 MONTHLY MINIMUM
From Abuja Nigeria
The Organized labour has formally petitioned for a substantial increase in the minimum wage for public sector employees, proposing a new minimum of ₦154,000 per month. This request signifies a 120% hike aimed at combating the rising cost of living and economic challenges facing civil servants across the country.
According to Nagmanews, a letter dated March 12, 2026, was sent to the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation. In the letter, the National Public Service Negotiating Council expressed gratitude for recent gratuity payments to retirees but stressed the urgent necessity for a comprehensive salary review. The letter was signed by National Chairman Benjamin Anthony and National Secretary Olowoyo Gbenga.
The council emphasized that many public workers are struggling to meet their basic needs due to stagnant wages amidst escalating living costs. They highlighted factors such as rising inflation, increased fuel prices, higher transportation fares, and the soaring costs of food, housing, healthcare, and education as key contributors to workers’ hardships.
This call for a salary review follows a recent meeting of the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council held in Abuja on March 9, 2026, where members agreed that adjusting salaries is crucial to reflect current economic realities and ease the financial burdens faced by public servants.
