A Look At Gov. Emmanuel’s Agricultural Prowess

Agriculture plays a crucial role in the economy of developing countries, and provides the main source of food, income and employment to their populations.
Beyond providing an expanding market for the products of the other sectors in the initial stages of development of the economy, agriculture helps in the development of other sectors.

Governor Udom Emmanuel, upon assumption of office in 2015, made robust promises regarding the agricultural sector of Akwa Ibom State. This is even as he noted the fertility of the state’s soil, its numerous untapped potentials and the prospects it could hold for food sufficiency, investments and foreign exchange.

The State Boss thus swung into action and has gradually changed the state from being civil-service and politically driven to being agric-oriented.
A look at the state today, compared to what was obtainable in the past shows a place where commercial and subsistent agriculture thrives robustly.
The Udom Emmanuel’s administration has brought to existence (through the collaboration with Skye Bank (now Polaris Bank) and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Anchor Borrowers Scheme) Cassava farmers and mobilization of 5,000 farmers for the scheme, as well as creation of 15,000 jobs (downstream) and about 45,000 jobs (upstream) through value addition; Cat fish farmers and mobilization of 2, 000 cat fish farmers for the scheme as well as creation of 6,000 jobs (downstream) and 18, 000 (upstream) through value addition and the training of enumerators on the use of modern electronic gadgets for data capturing and field mapping under the RIFAN / CBN/ and the Akwa Ibom State Rice Anchor Borrowers Scheme.

So far, 120 Hectares of rice farm have been cultivated in Ibiono Ibom local government area and 33 processing sheds and assets constructed under FADAMA III + AF programme for the farmers.
Just last month, the first harvest of the Ibom Golden Rice cultivated, milled and packaged in the area was presented to the public.

The Chairman of Ibiono Ibom, Rt Hon. Ekomabasi Akpan had at the occasion said that the rice farmers association (RIFAN) in the area “have cultivated two thousand, two hundred hectares of farmland” and are ready to produce more.
Also, 241 Cooperative Groups on agriculture have been formed to open more channels of communication between the farmers and the government.

In a bid to take-off unemployed youths off the streets, 300 Participants trained under Graduate Unemployed Youths/Women Support Scheme (FADAMA GUYS) were trained and given grants in the tune of N95,384,000 to 249 beneficiaries.

The present administration has also been instrumental in the construction of Agricultural Equipment Hiring Enterprise (AEHE) Centre at Awa Iman, Onna L.G.A; Ploughing and Ridging of 130 hectares by AEHE; Acquisition of Tractors with Accessories and 14 Implements; Harvesting of 330 Hectares of Cassava cultivated; Upgrading of hatchery at Mbiaya Uruan and Development of breeder farms; Successful training of 10 Akwa Ibom State Animal Scientists on Goat Multiplication and Insemination Programme in South Africa, and the Cultivation of paddocks and perimeter fencing at the Goat Multiplication Centre in Ikot Itie Udung, Nsit Atai L.G.A.

Moreso, 33 processing Boreholes and Reticulation have been completed across the state, 1 Borehole and Reticulation completed for Agricultural Equipment Hiring Enterprise (AEHE), Hosting and Training of Farmers (Training of Trainers, ToT) on Vegetable Production, as well as partnership with Ibom Agricon Rice for the production of Ibom Family Rice in Ini LGA.
Furthermore, 10 hectares of land have been dedicated to the cultivation of vegetables like tomato at Ekeya, Okobo LGA.

One of Governor Emmanuel’s biggest agricultural renaissance story is the Green House Farm which has today birthed the indigenous production of tomatoes, carrots, cabbage, lettuce and other crops to aid food sufficiency in the state.

It was for this laudable initiative that the former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo noted at his recent visit that the state is making landmark achievements in agricultural production and that if such projects are multiplied across the country, Nigeria would have an edge in food production rather than depend on importation from other countries.
The former president who is a renowned farmer said agriculture as an alternative source of revenue for states should be encouraged, while calling on other state governors to emulate the initiatives of Governor Udom Emmanuel.

Obasanjo gave the commendation after his brief stopover at the Green House Farm along Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, during his visit to the state for the burial of former Secretary to the Government of the federation, late Chief Ufot Ekaette.
Notably, the Green House will be replicated in the 31 local government areas of the state to ensure even production and sufficiency of the vegetable crops.
In his zest to ensure that all hands are brought to the fore of agriculture, the State Governor has introduced School Farm Reviving Campaign across the State.

Speaking at the unveiling of the Ibom Golden Rice in Ibiono, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Women Development, Dr. Glory Edet announced that the State government had concluded plans to plant coconut across public schools in the State to further boost agriculture. This is to crave the indulgence of the young scholars on the Akwa Ibom’s agricultural project.

Meanwhile, a 10-metric-tons Cocoa Fermentation and Drying Plant has been built in Ananammong, Ini LGA, with an MoU signed with Contec Global for the cultivation of improved variety of Banana for export on 2,000 hectares of land and the establishment of 300 hectares Bio Safe (Organic) Agricultural Hub.
Apart from making these opportunities available, the State Governor has created an enabling environment for Small Scale Farmers/Farming to thrive.

Farmers across the length and breadth of the state can boast of a conducive environment given to them for their operations by the state government.
With these and more on the count, the Governor has established his integrity as a promise keeper, visionary leader and problem solver.
…Udom is working!

MUCH ADO ABOUT GOV EMMANUEL’S BUDGET

A budget is a financial plan for a defined period, often one year. It may also include planned sales volumes and revenues, resource quantities, costs and expenses, assets, liabilities and cash flows. Companies, governments, families and other organizations use it to express strategic plans of activities or events in measurable terms.

It is equally seen as the sum of money allocated for a particular purpose and the summary of intended expenditures along with proposals for how to meet them. It may include a budget surplus, providing money for use at a future time, or a deficit in which expenses exceed income.

This is to say that budget is not necessarily the amount of money spent, but the amount intended to be spent, which in most cases are not spent up to that.

Since assumption of office in 2015, Gov. Udom Emmanuel has shown a high level of financial intelligence and prudent management skills, chiefly as a result of his background in the financial sector.

He has in no small measure brought his sense of financial integrity and accountability into his leadership as the governor of Akwa Ibom State.

Till date, his administration has not been found wanting in terms of keeping accurate account of every expenditure done in the state, hence the adoption of annual publication of financial report of the state to be perused and studied by those interested to know how funds are spent, the first of its kind.

It goes a long way to show how transparent the governor is, which is equally seen in the way he handles public funds.

Even in budgeting, especially in a time like this when the world is battling with economic realities, Gov. Emmanuel has in several occasions been praised for his prudent management of state resources. He has ensured that funds allocated for projects are judiciously handled, hence the lack of incessant supplementary budgets that other governments are known for.

Investigative journalists should rather be finding out the actual amount that government spent for a particular item in the yearly appropriation, and not what they intended to spend. Budget is a plan, and not a financial report of expenditure. This is what I expected some self-aclaimed investigative reporters to know. Ignorance should not be wrapped in royal robes, it projects shame

Akpabio's Recent Interview: The lamentations of an embittered loser

Chief Kingley Ikpe,
Abak

“It is the unsaid things we say that speaks louder than those we say” – Anonymous

Days ago, the Minister for Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio is said to have hosted a group of journalists in his hometown and made some spurious comments making him sound like a broken record.

Among his assertions were disparaging comments about himself looking like one who fell among robbers when he joined the All Progressive Congress (APC), untruths that he was not invited to the burial ceremony of Governor Udom Emmanuel’s late father, the American embassy did not deny him visa, he borrowed money to go to law school, he was warned not to install Udom Emmanuel as successor, he will represent the whole of Akwa Ibom till he dies, Nigeria owes Buhari an apology and other things which were not necessary.

Akpabio we know is gifted with the gab of talking – an endowment he sometimes uses to his disadvantage.
A lot of times, we do not say certain things, not because we fear to say them but because the utterance of them may lead to us being seen as a child, a failure, an attention seeker, a loner, embittered and even a loser.

Overtime, actions have spoken louder than words and the manner in which we express ourselves have often said more than the words we say in itself. This is undoubtably the reason many leaders locally, nationally and internationally succumb to the scrutiny of their speeches by their media aides and sometimes leave the job of speaking about their achievements to them.

This is however not the case with Senator Akpabio who would not resist saying whatever comes to his mind at any place or occasion he has to do so, to a point that he even creates an occasion if such does not come to him when we feels like talking.
This has overtime presented him as an embittered, expired, lonely yet dangerous fellow with a lot of venom to spit if accosted or challenged.

Perhaps Akpabio does not know that the honour which he retired with as Governor has diminished and that his reign as the Niger Delta Minister does not hold much fulcrum compared to when he was governor – all thanks to his careless talks about what he did and did not do in office which we have heard a million times.

He should also be told that his absence at the Late Gabriel Nkanang’s burial (though not important) has painted him as one who is truly embittered and prideful. As a matter of fact, Akwa Ibom people were over satisfied with the dignitaries who graced the occasion, all of whom were on their own, formidable forces which his ego would never meet-up.

He should never have mentioned that no seat was kept for him in a place where people were struggling to even stand. Was he thinking that “his seat” would be kept sacred and covered like a statue in his absence till the end of the event? No way!

His assertion that he was warned by the former Borno State Governor and ex- PDP Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff and an undisclosed Bank MD, not to choose Governor Udom Emmanuel as his successor is yet another indication of lacking what to say. What are the bearings of his musings by the way?

Is Governor Udom Emmanuel not discharging his functions creditably? Are there no projects counting in thousands to Udom’s credit as much as he had? By the way, Governor Emmanuel has taken time to complete the projects he abandoned and paid debts he owed in his tenure which he (Akpabio) never did to his predecessor. Nobody cares what he thinks of the governor so long as Udom Emmanuel is working. We are content. Let him keep his kwashiorkor feeling to himself.

Besides, his allegation was confirmed to be false where he said that the former PDP Chairman spoke to him when he came to the State to receive his Ph.D Honoris Causa Degree during the period he was contemplating handing over to Governor Emmanuel.

A source who placed a call to the University of Uyo disclosed that Ali Modu Sheriff was not given any academic award by the institution and that the then PDP Chairman was the former Bauchi State Governor, Adamu Muazu and not Modu Sheriff.

I do not care whether or not he was denied visa. That again sounds like what people who lack what to say talk about; its his personal issue. I do not care about the honours from whichever institution he got them. There are a thousand and one awardees in Nigeria whose houses are laced with awards yet, they do not make noise.

It doesn’t matter who Ojukwu’s daughter is marrying in Akwa Ibom. Inter-marriages with the easterners and other tribes of the world started before Akpabio was born.
The projects he can not stop talking about were all done with Akwa Ibom’s Money. Why does he speak as though he executed them with his pocket money? Is there any of those things which another has not done?

All of these self-aggrandizements will only continue to show Mr. Minister as a ranter who’s full of himself.
We knew when he played Moses and we knew when he was Gideon but as it stands, the Akpabio we knew has far played Nebuchadnezzar with his actions and utterances and the consequences of such stage play will in time, manifest as it did in the Bible.
One does not need to slit a knife on another’s neck before being called a murderer, there are many ways to kill a man.

No one is stopping him from talking since he wont stop but he should be careful not to kill his already dwindling integrity with unneedful talks that are not seasoned with salt.
He should rather concentrate on the name-redeeming works he is doing at the NDDC, channel his energy into project implementation and seek the opinion of his aides before going out to demean himself before right-thinking members of the public.

Michael Enyong Wages War Against Poverty

----as he gives out FG jobs to constituents again

The member representing Uyo/Uruan/Nsit Atai/Ibesikpo Asutan Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Michael Enyong, today, empowered two more constituents with Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) jobs.

The job appointments facilitated by the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Solid Minerals Development takes effect from Tuesday, 18th March, 2020.

Enyong handed over the appointment letters to the beneficiaries, Mrs Anita Udoh from Uyo Local Government Area and Bridget Ekpeowo from Nsit Atai Local Government Area, in his Uyo Residence.

Presenting the appointment letters to the beneficiaries, the Federal Lawmaker reiterated his vow to root out poverty in its entirety from the constituency, emphazing that in no distant time, the constituency will witness a strong economic and financial revolution, which will make the area top the first destination in Nigeria entirely free from poverty.

He urged the beneficiaries of the 35 years and pensionable job to make good use of the opportunity in their hands and exude virtues of commitment, humility and sincerity at work, while assuring that he will fight poverty to a standstill.

The FIRS appointment letters is coming few days after Enyong had doled out the sum of N1m to eight of his constituents, N5,040,000 to 252 women as grants and more than 50 FG jobs in 2019.

Enyong harped on his newly launched financial scheme for his constituents christened: "The Millionaires Scheme", intimating that the scheme will run on course until his constituents become millionaires. He said the millions will help the constituents establish business, invest in meaningful jobs and cater for their long term needs.

He thanked the people for honouring him with their votes during the last election.

Mary-Grace Enyong, wife of the Federal Lawmaker, seized the opportunity to appreciate God for the grace and strength given to his husband to fulfil his promises to the people.

She said the gesture showcased that Enyong is committed to bringing back the dividends of democracy to the constituency.

Mrs Enyong explained that as an added advantage, the FIRS jobs will afford the beneficiaries, their spouses and children free medical services from NHIS.

Visibly elated Anita Udoh, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked God for remembering them at a time they least expected such uncommon favour.

She lauded Enyong for his fatherly disposition, care and love towards his constituents, pledging not to disappoint Enyong as they begin work, Tuesday.

She prayed God to bless the Federal Lawmaker and grant him more grace to deliver on all his promises.

Present at the event were: Hon. Samuel Efanga, Former Commissioner for Science and Technology, Hon. Uduak Ekpewo - Director-General, Odudu-Abasi Campaign Organization, PDP Women Leader Ibesikpo Asutan local government amongst others.

BABANTAN: THE MAN OF THE MOMENT

Many believe that the name Rt. Hon.(Dr). Michael Enyong, Member representing Ibesikpo Asutan/Nsit Atai/Uruan/Uyo Federal Constituency is synonymous to effective representation. Others believe that the name resonates hope for the hopeless; reverberates people's oriented leadership and re-echoes strength for the weak and downtrodden. Some others may have their own believe (s) about this name, but this is story for another day.

Pundits have it that leadership is about taking a people from a place of despair to a place of hope, perhaps pointing to and leading them to where they would heave a sigh of relief. This is what Dr. Enyong, popularly known as Baba Ntan, lives for.

Since assumption of office as the Member representing his Federal Constituency, the five-star Lawmaker has ventured into executing numerous life touching projects that have benefited his constituents irrespective of class and Political party difference. This is one man that believes anything which is sauce for the goose must also be sauce for the gander. Babantan is one in a million.

Few days back, I saw an opened message of gratitude from one Mr. Ekemini whose academic burdens was taken up by Babantan. And soon after his graduation, he was employed in one of the Federal Ministries through Babantan's recommendation. Another was the army man whose story on how he found himself in the military was touching. These cases are just two in a thousand. I don't know, but most atimes, I'm moved to assume that this man is not from this planet. Maybe he's an angel in human form.

Having seen the suffering of most of his constituents in the rural communities, he introduced an initiative people termed " who want to be a millionaire". This is an initiative where his constituents from the rural communities are given the opportunity to present their business plans and get a million Naira for start-up. Crimes are as result of poverty. This initiative is one of the ways crimes would be curbed in the State.

Rt. Hon. Michael Enyong is a rare gem. Infact, he is the man of the moment.

UDOM EMMANUEL: REVAMPING ELECTRICITY FOR ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY

Uninterrupted power supply is as essential as life itself. Adequate electricity supply stimulates economic activities in any society because virtually every economic growth is tied to it.

Today, life without electricity is almost impossible. Life has become so modern and so mechanical that even for all small things in daily life, we need electricity. The television, radio, heater and all our demostic appliances are running only by electric power. Not just these, electricity is used in various areas of human activities such as Economic activities.

Many economic activities of human revolves around the use of electricity. For example, in the food processing and packaging sector, most of the machenaries are powered by electricity. Computers that have become essential tool of business transactions run on electricity. Perishable goods are preserved by being refrigerated through electricity powered refrigirators.

Having understood all of these and the significance of effective power supply in the stability of an economy, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, upon his assumption of office on May 20th, 2019 declared a state of emergency on the State's power sector.

Before now, the State had witnessed a low power supply and in about 75% communities, there was entirely a zero power supply overtime. In these areas, experiencing a 30 minutes power supply in every six months was like the coming of the son of God, Jesus Christ. This had gone a long way in crippling the chances of industries being cited in these areas, and in other way round, had negative pacrs on the economy of the areas.

Having known that electricity plays important role from production to distribution of goods as well as in social activities, the State Governor moved in, consolidating his industrialization strides with revamping of the electricity in the State. This he has achieved by building mega sub-stations across the State.

One of these power sub-stations constructed by the Governor is the Power Sub-station at the Victor Attah International Airport. This is part of the governor's efforts towards improving power supply at the airport and its environs. It is the first time the airport has been connected to national grid since it commenced flight operations in September 2009. Today, parts of Nsit Atai, Uruan and Okobo are enjoying the steady power supply from this particular sub-station.

The construction of the 2x60MVA, 132/33KV Power Sub-station at Ekim, Mkpat Enin is one of the most sophisticated power substations in Nigeria and supplies electricity to five Local Government Areas in the state.

With this alongside the good road network and tight security that the Governor has put in place in the state, one would not be found wanting on the reason why not fewer than 20 functional industries are currently operating in the State.

In addition, small scale firms which were gradually going into extinction due to poor or unavailability of power supply overtime, have been revived through steady power supply.

Again, the construction of the Etoi and 1x60MVA,132/33KV Afaha Ube Transmission sub-stations in Uyo Local Government Area alongside other sub-stations would not only provide light for these areas, but also to their neighbouring communities. With these the "POWER SUPPLY FOR ALL BY 2021" initiative of the Governor is possible. What this means is that even when the State is currently having challenges of not being allowed to own her Power Distribution Company which would utilize the full potentials of the State owned Power Plant thereby making 24/7 power supply across homes, the governor is devising means to actualise this dream before the end of 2021.

When Mr. Udom Emmanuel stated that he was going to revamp the State's economy to be better than that of Lagos State in the near days, he meant it. One of the ways this dream could be achieved is through effective power supply.

CHARLES UDOH: GOLDEN FLEECE OF UDOM'S MASTER STRATEGIST

By Raymond Alphonsus

On December 1st 2016, Mr. Charles Udoh mounted the saddle as the Commissioner of Information and Strategy. Hon. Charles who headed Strategy as it's pioneer Commissioner was saddled with the task of developing an effective Government Strategy as well as being the spokesman of Government.

Akwa Ibom politics was redefined after Hon. Charles Udoh was sworn in as Commissioner. He brought in momentum and energy that rebranded everything around politics and Governance in Gov. Udom Emmanuel's Government and as expected he rolled in excellent results which made the entire state see Gov. Udom Emmanuel in excellent light as a man of peace who deserves to be massively voted for a second term. The thirty one (31) Local Government areas embraced the peaceful image of the Governor who is building Industries to end Unemployment and Poverty. As the Government's Chief Spokesman, Hon. Charles left no stones unturned in putting the Good image of Gov. Udom's Government in excellent light at all times. This made the Governor's popularity a hard nut to crack for the All Progressive Congress (APC) at the polls, this rendered futile, null and void all efforts by the APC to paint the State Government's image black. The APC's aim of wooing Akwa Ibom electorates was thwarted and defeated at first light.

It is well known that the media largely influences the pendulum of politics and Hon. Charles harnessed this fact to the Governor's benefit. Three years before the 2019 polls, Hon. Charles built a massive impenetrable Goodwill around the PDP Government in Akwa Ibom State. As head of strategy, he used his office to rebrand Governance and politics. Politicians, masses, voters all saw and attested to His Excellency's peaceful brand of Governance. The Ministry of Information and Strategy X- rayed and magnified all the good intentions and achievements of Government to the world. Akwa Ibom electorates clearly saw that Gov. Udom was ending unemployment, People clearly saw that Jobs/ wealth was being created on daily basis, People clearly saw the new state of the art hospitals built, equipped and commissioned by the Governor in all the nooks and crannies of the state, People saw the free, compulsory, qualitative education program that the Government of His Excellency Gov. Udom Emmanuel is producing rice, the world saw that medical syringes were produced here in Akwa Ibom and exported to the world.

Hon. Charles Udoh as the government spokesman sang the song of Gov. Udom's achievement everywhere in the state. And today, he is still doing the excellent job he did since his appointment in 2016 and that's why media practitioners in the state can attest to the fact media molestation by the state Government has been reduced to zero, no longer has Government arrested journalists like before, no longer has journalists been kidnapped like before.
