IF YOU WOULDN'T BUY SOMETHING FROM A MARKET RUN BY GHOSTS, DON'T READ THIS STORY AFTER MIDNIGHT...
"THE NIGHT MARKET"
In Umuoji village, there's a market that appears only when the moon is red β and it sells things that shouldn't exist.
Everyone knows the first rule: never buy what you didn't come for.
Ngozi breaks it.
The moon hasn't turned red in twelve years.
Tonight, it did β and Ngozi walked straight toward it.
Ngozi has spent three weeks sleeping on a wooden bench beside her mother's sickbed.
The healer from the city took their money and gave them nothing but pity.
Her mother's breathing has grown thin, like paper about to tear.
That evening, fetching water, Ngozi meets an old woman at the stream who isn't from the village β nobody has ever seen her before.
The woman studies Ngozi's face like she's reading something written on it.
"Your mother is dying," she says, not as a question.
"There's a market.
It opens when the moon turns red.
It hasn't opened in twelve years."
Ngozi laughs it off β until she looks up and the moon, full and low over the trees, is beginning to bleed color at its edges.
She runs home to check on her mother.
Worse.
Fever climbing.
Her brother is asleep, exhausted from helping all day.
Ngozi makes a decision alone, in the dark, and follows the old woman's directions into the forest path nobody in Umuoji walks after sundown.
The market isn't market stalls and lanterns β it's wrong in a way she can't name.
Silent.
Too silent. Vendors who don't look up.
Goods on tables that shift shape if she looks too long.
A trader at the last stall lifts his head before she's said a word.
His eyes are empty sockets, smooth like they were never there.
He smiles.
"Ngozi," he says.
"I've been expecting you."
