Haba! Since when did running a shop turn into detective work?

Do you want to scan everything I bought?

Business owner, why are you using your eyes to scan every single item from your competitors?

Why do you want to know if they sell what you sell or not?

Last time I checked, you didn’t change profession to detective or police officer.

So why do you always do this when customers buy from another shop:

¹/ Scan customers’ bags like customs officer.

²/ Drop sarcastic comments about competitors.

Âł/ Compare prices unnecessarily.

⁴/ Look at customers with attitude instead of a smile.

⁾/ Gossip about where they bought from.

And sometimes, this behavior makes customers feel:

š/ Uncomfortable.
²/ Like you don’t value them
³/ That you’re insecure.
⁴/ That you lack confidence in your business.
⁵/ That you can’t be trusted.

Abeg, stop straining those eyes of yours.

Use them well to look at your shop, see what needs restocking, check what needs packaging, even notice what part of the store needs renovation.

Stop scaring customers away.

Remember: Customers are not suspect, treat them like partners.

Small business owners no send big grammar or boardroom talk.
Na survival be the real hustle.

Sometimes I ask myself…
“Are the people I’m writing for even on Facebook?”

Because my posts aren’t about office life or fancy talk.

They’re about the struggles every hustler face.

The struggle of:

¹✓How to understand customers

²✓ How to sell more

³✓ How to do simple marketing that works

4✓ How to survive the daily wahala of running a shop or side hustle

And honestly, I know some hustlers might not even scroll long enough to see this.

But I will still show up because:

¹✓ Every business owner needs small tips that make sales easier.

²✓ Even if they miss it, someone close to them can learn and share.

³✓That small shop today fit turn big brand tomorrow.

⁴✓ When small businesses win, the whole community wins.

At the end of the day, I’m just here to make the hustle lighter,
the sales better,
and remind business owners that they’re not alone in this journey

I learned the hard way that sales speak louder than guesses.

Years ago, while working in a small shop, I saw that many business owners don’t really know what their customers want.

My madam often filled the store with things few people asked for, while the items everyone wanted were too few. Sometimes she bought goods just hoping “one day” they would sell.

Meanwhile, customers walked across the street to buy what we didn’t have.

I noticed:

1. Some things sold out fast
2. Some sat in the store for weeks
3. Others moved slowly but kept selling

The truth was clear, customers were showing us what they wanted by what they bought and what stayed.

Stop filling your shop with what won’t sell quickly while leaving out what buyers ask for every day.

Let your customers guide what you buy next.

Before You Open the Store Today, Hold On and Hear This…

Many shop owners complain, “Customers are not buying."

But the truth is sometimes, it’s not the product. It’s what you don’t know about your market.

Your knowledge about the people you sell to will determine how much you sell each day.

So before you sell a single item today, ask yourself these 4 questions.

1. Who is walking past my shop every day?

Are they students, workers, or families?

The people around you are your real market. The people that will buy from you or refer you are those around you. They are the ones in your street.

Business owners, If you stop here, you’ll miss the rest. See question 2 in the comments.

5 customers just left your business and you’re blaming it on the Nigerian economy.

You think they left because money is tight? No.
You think it’s because of competitors? Wrong.

They left because of the way you treat them.

Keep frowning like they forced you to open a shop.

Keep answering their questions like they’re disturbing your peace.

Trust me, customers don’t have the patience. They’ll happily pay more somewhere else, where they feel respected.

If you can’t respect your customers, you’ll keep watching them walk away.

Your smile sells faster than your product.

When a customer walks into your shop, the first thing they notice is your face.

If you smile, they feel relaxed.
If you frown, they feel like leaving.

A smile costs you nothing, but it makes people want to buy from you.
That’s why many times, it’s not your product that keeps them, it’s you.

Customers must meet you frowning, right?

Yes, that’s what you’ve decided to do since the economy is not smiling. But listen, customers will still leave you when

1. You act like they’re disturbing you.

2. You answer questions with anger (madam, take it easy ).

3. You ignore them while pressing your phone like the phone will disappear.

4. You behave like you’re doing them a favour.

5. You roll your eyes when they ask for the price.

6. You frown throughout the transaction.

7. You get angry when they don’t buy immediately.

8. You talk more than you listen.

The one that off me the most is when you ask customers “what do you want?” with serious anger on your face.

Business owner, relax oh…
Because if you continue like this, you’ll end up with no customers at all.

If customers keep leaving your business, look in the mirror first.

Your attitude can either push customers away
or pull them closer.
Don’t let your attitude push people away.

Don’t be cold towards customers.
Yes, some will try your patience but stay calmand be patient.

Treat them with care. Make them feel important, because the truth is… they are.

Do this, and you’ll see it happen.Customers will return,
and your business will grow.

Remember, growth doesn’t start with the product.
It starts with you.

This hot afternoon, you have gone to buy food again but not from same vendor.

WHY?
You didn't go back to the same vendor because of what happened yesterday...

You went to buy food. The food is delicious.
But the seller talks to you like you’re disturbing them...

You hear words like... The food is still on the fire, of you can't wait, abeg dey go

You can trust some food sellers... one said to my cousin "no be you send me go market"

Their tone cuts deep, sharper than a knife.

But because you needed food at that point, you endured.

You bought the food, but on your way home, you vowed never to come back again.

That’s how your customers think too.
They don’t just buy what you sell.
They buy how you treat them while selling.

This is why businesses lose loyal customers without even knowing it.

Remember to use kind words on your customers today.

Have you ever walked into a shop and felt like you didn’t matter at all?

You step in, hoping for a warm welcome but the seller doesn’t even raise their head.

You were welcomed with no greeting, no smile, and just silence.

In that moment, you don’t feel like a customer.
You feel invisible and unwanted

So you quietly make a purchase and walk out.

While on the road, you vowed never to come back to that store.

WHY?
Not because of the price.
Not because of the product.
But because of the attitude.

Remember, a smile and a warm welcome can be the difference between a one time customer and a loyal client.

Evening reminder
Customers rarely walk away because of price or product.

Most times, it’s the attitude that pushes them out.
Do you agree?
