THE WIFE HE LEFT BEHIND

A Story of Love, Sacrifice, Betrayal, and a Second Chance

Chapter One — The Promise

The first rain of the year had just fallen in Umuoma village.

The red earth was wet, the smell of fresh rain filled the air, and women were rushing home from the farm before the rain became heavy again.

Inside a small mud house at the edge of the village, Amara sat beside a small charcoal stove, preparing the evening meal.

Their pot was almost empty.

There was only a little garri left in the kitchen, and the last bag of rice had finished two days earlier.

But Amara wasn't complaining.

She looked at her husband, Chike, who sat quietly on a wooden stool near the doorway.

Chike had been unusually quiet that evening.

“Chike,” Amara called gently.

He looked at her.

“Yes, my wife?”

“You have been sitting there for a long time. What is wrong?”

Chike sighed.

“My brother in the city called me this afternoon.”

Amara stopped stirring the food.

“What did he say?”

“He said there is work for me in Lagos.”

Amara's face brightened.

“Work?”

Chike nodded.

“It is not a big job. But he said if I work hard, I can make something from it.”

Amara smiled.

“Then you should go.”

Chike stared at her.

“Go?”

“Yes. Go.”

“But what will happen to you?”

Amara laughed softly.

“What will happen to me? I will be here. I will farm. I will sell my vegetables. I will take care of our home.”

Chike moved closer to her.

“Amara, Lagos is far. I don't want you to think I am abandoning you.”

She put down the spoon and held his hand.

“I know you, Chike. You are going there because you want our lives to become better.”

Her voice became softer.

“Go and make something of yourself. I will wait for you.”

Chike's eyes became wet.

He pulled her into his arms.

“I promise you, Amara. I will not forget you.”

Amara smiled against his chest.

“When you become rich, don't forget the woman who ate garri with you when you had nothing.”

Chike laughed.

“Forget you? Never.”
