Christmas in Benikrukru: EMT Powers Grand 18th Carnival Festival
Benikrukru Community in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State, came very alive on December 25, 2025, as the Esther Matthew Tonlagha Foundation (EMT Foundation) powered the 18th edition of the Benikrukru Christmas Carnival, an annual event that has become a major highlight of the yuletide season in the Niger Delta.
The highly anticipated carnival, organised by the EMT Foundation, drew an estimated crowd of over 30,000 people, including traditional rulers, social groups, government officials, captains of industry, academics, technocrats, and celebrities from the Nigeria music and movie industries.
The celebration kicked off with a colourful carnival parade through the community, led by the Founder of the Esther Matthew Tonlagha Foundation, Deaconess (Dr.) Mrs. Esther Matthew Tonlagha. Participants, dressed in vibrant and flamboyant costumes, danced joyfully to the rhythmic sounds of a brass band, creating a spectacular display described by many as a riot of colours.
Activities later shifted to the Benikrukru Community open field, where an enchanting carnival atmosphere had been set up. The venue, which accommodated over 30,000 participants including dignitaries, served as the main stage for electrifying musical performances. Several artistes mounted the stage in turns, thrilling the massive crowd in what has become a signature of the carnival’s 18-year tradition of excellence, resilience and communal pride.
Dignitaries at the event included Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State; the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor; former Deputy Governor of Delta State, His Excellency Kingsley Burutu Otuaro; and the Managing Director of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, High Chief Kestin Pondi, among others.
The event also featured performances by top Nigerian music stars such as Timaya, Burna Boy, Phyno, Shallipopi, Famous Pluto and several others, who kept the audience on its feet.
Over the years, the Benikrukru Christmas Carnival has remained a symbol of unity, strength and cultural pride, offering indigenes and visitors an unforgettable festive experience while reinforcing the enduring spirit of the Benikrukru people.
