Tantita Rice Farm Set to Transform Niger Delta into Major Rice Production Hub

Tantita Rice Farm Ltd has unveiled an ambitious agricultural initiative aimed at transforming the wetlands of the Niger Delta into what is projected to become West Africa’s largest paddy rice production hub.

The project, which includes a 25-hectare rice farm and a world-class rice processing facility, is designed to drive economic diversification in the region by promoting agriculture as a sustainable alternative to oil dependence.

According to the company, the initiative will focus on boosting food security, creating employment opportunities, and supporting alternative livelihoods for communities across the Niger Delta. The project is also expected to stimulate economic growth by enhancing local rice production and reducing reliance on imported rice.

Tantita stated that the rice farm represents a strategic shift from the traditional oil-based economy to agriculture-driven development, describing it as a bold step toward unlocking the vast agricultural potential of the region.

Industry observers believe the project could significantly contribute to rural development, empower local farmers, and strengthen Nigeria’s quest for self-sufficiency in food production.

With the unveiling of Tantita Rice Farm Ltd, the company says it is ushering in a new era of economic transformation, positioning agriculture as a key driver of sustainable growth and prosperity in the Niger Delta.

Obuguru Faces Imminent Disappearance as Ocean Encroachment Worsens, OKYC Raises Red Alert, Demands Intervention

The Ogulagha Kingdom Youth Council (OKYC) has raised serious concerns over the worsening environmental crisis threatening the existence of Obuguru Community in Ogulagha Kingdom, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, warning that the community may soon disappear if urgent intervention is not undertaken by relevant authorities.

In a statement signed by the President of the Ogulagha Kingdom Youth Council (OKYC), Comrade Joseph Okou, on behalf of the youths of Ogulagha Kingdom, the council described the situation in Obuguru as alarming and called for immediate action to halt the devastating impact of coastal erosion and persistent Atlantic Ocean surges that continue to ravage the oil-producing community.

According to the youth body, the community is facing an unprecedented environmental threat as the ocean steadily encroaches on its shoreline, destroying land, homes, economic assets, and critical infrastructure. The council noted that large portions of the community have already been lost to the sea, leaving residents increasingly vulnerable to displacement and hardship.

OKYC called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Ministry of Environment, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Delta State Government, DESOPADEC, the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), and other relevant agencies to urgently intervene before the situation degenerates into a full-scale humanitarian disaster.

Comrade Joseph Okou said the reality confronting Obuguru goes beyond ordinary environmental challenges, stressing that the community is now battling for survival.

"The people of Obuguru are witnessing the gradual destruction of their ancestral homeland. What is happening is not merely coastal erosion but a direct threat to the continued existence of an entire community. If immediate steps are not taken, Obuguru may be completely wiped off the map within the foreseeable future," he stated.

The council lamented that residents have watched helplessly as the advancing ocean continues to swallow vast stretches of land and destroy valuable properties. It revealed that several structures have already been affected by the aggressive ocean surge, including a church building that was completely overtaken and washed away by the sea.

According to the statement, the destruction caused by the ocean has not only endangered lives and properties but has also threatened the economic survival of the people whose livelihoods depend largely on fishing and other marine-related activities.

The youth body further expressed concern that the continued erosion could force families from their ancestral homes, leading to mass displacement and the loss of centuries-old cultural heritage deeply rooted in the community.

OKYC also decried what it described as years of neglect despite the enormous contribution of Obuguru and other host communities to Nigeria's oil and gas industry. The council noted that while the area has generated substantial wealth for the nation through crude oil production, the people continue to suffer from environmental degradation, underdevelopment, and inadequate infrastructure.

The council specifically criticized former Eni Agip Oil Company, now operating as Oando Surgenal Limited, for what it described as inadequate attention to the environmental consequences of decades of oil exploration and production activities within the community.

It argued that communities that have contributed significantly to the economic growth of the nation deserve protection, environmental restoration, and sustainable development rather than abandonment.

Consequently, OKYC called on the Federal Government and Oando Surgenal Limited to immediately commence shoreline protection projects, erosion control measures, environmental remediation programmes, and sustainable development initiatives capable of preserving the community and improving the welfare of its residents.

The council also demanded the implementation of a comprehensive decommissioning and abandonment programme for obsolete oil facilities in the area in line with internationally accepted environmental standards and best practices.

Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful advocacy, the Ogulagha Kingdom Youth Council urged government officials, environmental agencies, development partners, and corporate organizations to urgently assess the situation in Obuguru and take decisive action before it becomes too late.

"Obuguru Community is facing an existential threat. Every passing day without intervention pushes the community closer to extinction. We are calling on all relevant authorities to act now to save lives, protect properties, preserve our environment, and secure the future of our people," the statement concluded.

Abanyama Forest Horror: Eight Graves, 30 Alleged Victims

Residents of Creektown in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State have been left in shock following the arrest of a suspected serial killer who allegedly confessed to murdering about 30 people and led security operatives to a forest hideout where eight shallow graves were uncovered.

The suspect, identified as Akaninyene, an indigene of Obot Akara, was apprehended during a coordinated security operation after intelligence reports linked him to the disappearance and killing of a recent victim in the community.

Security personnel, including soldiers and tactical police operatives, reportedly tracked the suspect to a secluded hut hidden deep inside Abanyama Forest in Ukim Ita Community, Creektown. The operation was supported by local youths and community elders who had become increasingly concerned about recurring cases of missing persons in the area.

According to sources, the suspect attempted to flee upon sighting security operatives but was swiftly arrested before he could escape further into the forest.

A search of the camp led to the gruesome discovery of eight shallow graves believed to contain decomposing human remains. Witnesses at the scene claimed that many of the bodies recovered were headless, while some graves allegedly contained the remains of more than one victim.

Investigators also discovered plantain crops planted over several burial sites, a development believed to be part of efforts to conceal the crimes.

Security sources said the findings suggest that the killings may have been carried out over a prolonged period without detection.

During interrogation, Akaninyene allegedly confessed to killing about 30 persons who had previously been declared missing within the community. He was also said to have guided investigators to several burial locations where bodies were later exhumed for further examination.

The suspect reportedly disclosed that his latest victim was killed on May 26, 2026. He further claimed that a female accomplice assisted in luring unsuspecting victims to the forest hideout and helped restrain them before they were murdered.

The breakthrough reportedly came after residents heard cries for help and sounds of struggle during the latest incident, prompting alarm and immediate action by community leaders.

The matter was subsequently reported by the Councillor representing Creektown Ward 1, Apostle Hon. Ene Itam, alongside the ward chairman, youths and elders, to the Executive Chairman of Odukpani Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Elder Chief Ukpong Etim Asido, who immediately alerted security agencies.

The swift intervention of military personnel and police tactical teams led to the suspect's arrest before he could flee the area.

Members of the Odukpani Legislative Assembly, including Hon. Effiom Ekene and Hon. Emmanuel of Adibo Efut Ward, were also said to have played active roles in ensuring the suspect was apprehended.

Community leaders have commended security agencies and local youths for their vigilance and collaboration throughout the operation, while residents continue to grapple with the disturbing revelations.

Following the arrest, youths in the area have intensified search operations in surrounding forests to uncover possible additional hideouts and identify other suspects who may be connected to the alleged killings.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Cross River State Police Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the case remains under investigation. He noted that authorities are working to verify details of the suspect's confession and establish the full extent of the alleged crimes.

Security has since been reinforced in the area as forensic experts and investigators continue examining the scene, gathering evidence and determining the exact number of victims linked to the suspected serial killings.

Police Arrest 780 as PSG Champions League Celebrations Turn Violent Across France

French authorities have arrested 780 people following widespread violence that erupted during celebrations of Paris Saint-Germain's UEFA Champions League triumph across France.

The victory celebrations, which began after PSG secured the prestigious European title, were overshadowed by clashes between revelers and security forces in several cities. Reports indicated that incidents of vandalism, looting, and public disorder were recorded, prompting a massive police response.

French law enforcement agencies confirmed that hundreds of individuals were taken into custody as officers worked to restore order. Several people also sustained injuries during the unrest, while property damage was reported in some areas.

Authorities condemned the violence, stressing that the actions of a minority of troublemakers tarnished what should have been a historic moment of celebration for PSG and its supporters.

Security agencies have pledged to investigate the incidents and prosecute those found responsible for acts of violence and destruction.

PSG's Champions League victory marks a significant milestone for the French club, but the celebrations were largely overshadowed by the disturbances that followed across the country.
