Army Headquarters Denies Alarm Over Pipeline Vandalism in Niger Delta

Abuja, 11 January 2026 - The Nigerian Army has dismissed a recent Sahara Reporters article claiming that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu raised an alarm about increasing pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta. In a statement released on 11 January 2025, Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, called the report "misleading, malicious and should be disregarded" [Original Article].

During his visit to 6 Division in Port Harcourt on 9 January 2025, the COAS addressed troops, emphasizing the importance of protecting critical national infrastructure. "Your job here is very key to protecting critical national infrastructure, and once you do that job very well, it will impact positively on the economy of the country," he said. He urged soldiers to be disciplined, committed, and dedicated, while assuring them that welfare concerns, particularly accommodation and education for their children, were being addressed. Several challenges raised by commanders were resolved on the spot, and others will be handled in Abuja [Original Article].

Colonel Anele clarified that the COAS did not express concern or raise any alarm about pipeline vandalism, noting that security indicators in the region show positive progress in curbing oil theft and vandalism. These efforts have supported sustained oil and gas exploration, benefiting the nation's economy. The Army urged the public to disregard attempts to downplay these successes and to continue providing credible intelligence to security agencies [Original Article].

Abuja, Nigeria - Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL), owned by Chief Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, has signed a deal with American defence company Textron Systems to acquire three advanced Aerosonde Mk. 4.7 VTOL drones. The drones will enhance Tantita's surveillance capabilities, helping combat oil theft and pipeline vandalism in Nigeria's Niger Delta region.

The deal, announced on December 29, 2025, includes options for additional aircraft and training support, boosting Tantita's operational capabilities. Textron Systems praises the Aerosonde's reliability, with over 700,000 flight hours globally, including U.S. Navy operations.

Deal Details

The Aerosonde Mk. 4.7 VTOL drones can take off and land vertically, ideal for surveillance and rapid response missions. The hybrid drones use quadrotor technology, operating without runways. Delivery dates for the Aerosonde systems have not been disclosed, but Tantita officials are expected to announce operational deployment plans soon.

Impact on Niger Delta

VIDEO: US Launches Airstrikes on ISIS in Nigeria, Trump Warns of More to Come

The United States military launched airstrikes against ISIS terrorists in northwest Nigeria on Christmas Day, targeting militants accused of killing Christians. US President Donald Trump announced the strikes on Truth Social, stating, "Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS Terrorist Scum in Northwest Nigeria, who have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians." The airstrikes, conducted in Sokoto State, killed multiple ISIS terrorists, according to US Africa Command (AFRICOM) ¹ ² ³.

Trump warned of more strikes if the violence continues, saying, "May God Bless our Military, and MERRY CHRISTMAS to all, including the dead Terrorists, of which there will be many more if their slaughter of Christians continues." US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth thanked Nigeria for its cooperation, adding, "More to come" ² ⁴.

The Nigerian government acknowledged the airstrikes, confirming cooperation with the US on counter-terrorism efforts. President Bola Tinubu had earlier pledged to protect all Nigerians, regardless of faith, and enshrine religious freedom ⁵ ⁶.

The US had designated Nigeria a "Country of Particular Concern" under the International Religious Freedom Act, citing threats to Christians. Trump had previously threatened military action if Nigeria failed to stop violence against Christians ¹ ².
