“I left my husband after four years of marriage and I’m back on the streets. We have two children.
I left him because when we came to the UK, he asked for 50/50 on our home expenses and we have been doing the 50/50 arrangement. Something happened and my company paid us the wages they’ve been owing us for a while. So when my husband found out about my pay, he asked me to bring £2,000 or £3,000 out of the £4,000 I was paid. I then reminded him that we have been doing the 50/50 arrangement and i have been keeping my own side of the bargain, why does he want to take half of my money? He said he brought me to the UK and that if he hadn’t brought me to the UK, I would still be in Nigeria suffēring.
So I told him I’m done with our marriage. I can no longer continue doing 50/50 and yet he still wants to be sharing from my salary. When I tried to talk to him, he said I was nagging and that I wouldn’t have had a life without him. So I told him go to Nigeria and get another woman that will be sharing her life with him.
As a woman in the UK, if you are earning more than your husband, don’t tell him how much you earn. If you are paid £3,000, tell him you’re paid £1,500 because men always feel we are not supposed to be richer than them.
I left with my kids and I have threatened to sue him if he doesn’t send money for child support.
So I am officially back to the streets. I don’t care if I’m judged. I am not a woman of virtue that gives all she works for to a man. I can’t stress and submit my earnings to any man.”— UK based Nigerian woman divorces husband over 50/50 arrangement.
