9TH AUGUST, 2026
HOMILY FOR THE 19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

THEME: WHEN GOD SEEMS SILENT, HE IS STILL PRESENT

Beloved in Christ, again today, our Lord reassures us of His presence in the quietness of our hearts: even in the darkest moments of our lives, He is present when we call upon Him.

Elijah, in 1 Kings 19:11–13, teaches us that God is not always found in the noise, the earthquake, or the fire, but in the gentle whisper. Sometimes, it is precisely in the silence that God speaks most deeply to us.

Paul, in Romans 9:1–5, reveals a heart deeply troubled for his people. His sorrow teaches us that when we truly encounter God, our hearts become sensitive not only to our own struggles but also to the pain of others. In the quiet moments we spend with God, He gives us the grace to carry others in prayer.

This is what the Evangelist Matthew tells us in chapter 14:22–33: we must never lose focus, even in the face of challenges. Like the disciples caught in the storm, we may sometimes feel overwhelmed by the winds and waves of life. Yet Jesus comes to them, walking on the sea. Peter steps out in faith, but when he takes his eyes off Jesus and focuses on the wind and the waves, he begins to sink. But the moment he cries, “Lord, save me!”, Jesus immediately stretches out His hand and saves him.

Today, the message of our liturgy is clear: God is present in the silence, present in our pain, and present in our storms. What we need is not always for the storm to disappear, but for our eyes to remain fixed on Christ. For when our faith is focused on Jesus, even the storm cannot have the finaly word.

Let us pray.
Lord Jesus, when life becomes noisy, help us hear Your voice; when our hearts are troubled, strengthen our faith; and when we begin to sink, stretch out Your hand and save us. May we never lose sight of You, especially in the storms of our lives. Amen.
Happy Sunday
Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Ogbe.
