__________THE FAITH (IMAN)__________
And the saying of the Prophet ﷺ: *"Islam is built upon five"*
*And it is statement and action, and it increases and decreases.*

Allah the Most High said:
*{So that they may increase in faith along with their faith}* [Al-Fath 48:4]
*{And We increased them in guidance}* [Al-Kahf 18:13]
*{And Allah increases those who are guided in guidance}* [Maryam 19:76]
*{And as for those who are guided, He increases them in guidance and grants them their righteousness}* [Muhammad 47:17]
*{And that those who believe may increase in faith}* [Al-Muddaththir 74:31]
And His saying: *{Which of you has this increased him in faith? As for those who believed, it has increased them in faith}* [At-Tawbah 9:124]
And His saying, may His remembrance be exalted: *{So fear them, but it increased them in faith}* [Aal ‘Imran 3:173]
And the Most High said: *{And it increased them not except in faith and submission}* [Al-Ahzab 33:22][present]

*And loving for the sake of Allah and hating for the sake of Allah is from faith.*

‘Umar ibn ‘Abd Al-‘Aziz wrote to ‘Adi ibn ‘Adi:
*"Faith has obligatory duties, laws, limits, and sunnah practices. Whoever fulfills them completely, has fulfilled faith completely. And whoever does not fulfill them, has not fulfilled faith completely. If I live, I will explain them to you so you can act upon them. And if I die, then I am not keen to remain in your company."*

And Ibrahim said: *{But [I asked] only that my heart may be satisfied}* [Al-Baqarah 2:260]

And Mu‘adh said: *"Sit with us, let us have faith for a while."*

And Ibn Mas‘ud said: *"Certainty is all of faith."*

And Ibn ‘Umar said: *"A slave does not reach the reality of taqwa until he leaves what causes doubt in his chest."*

And Mujahid said regarding *{He ordained for you}* [Ash-Shura 42:13]: *"We enjoined upon you, O Muhammad, and upon him, one religion."*

And Ibn ‘Abbas said regarding *{To each of you We prescribed a law and a method}* [Al-Ma’idah 5:48]: *"A path and a sunnah."*

Key point of the chapter:
Imam Al-Bukhari titled this to refute those who said "Iman is only in the heart". He proves 3 things from Qur’an + Athar of Sahabah:

1. *Iman = قول + عمل* Statement + Action: Saying the Shahadah, praying, giving zakah.
2. *Iman يزيد وينقص* Faith increases with obedience and decreases with sin. All the verses he quoted mention "increase in faith/guidance".
3. *الحب والبغض في الله* Loving and hating for Allah’s sake is part of faith.
This is the creed of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama‘ah.
Want me to break down the difference between "Islam" and "Iman" based on this chapter?

_______________ THE FAITH ______________
UBAYDULLAH Ibn Musa Narrated to us, he said: Hanzalah ibn Abi Sufyan informed us, from ‘Ikrimah ibn Khalid, from Ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنهما who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:*
*"Islam is built upon five: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, giving zakah, performing Hajj, and fasting Ramadan."*
[Its side narration 4515, Tuhfat Al-Ashraf 7344]
Quick notes:
1. *بُنِيَ الإِسْلاَمُ عَلَى خَمْسٍ* = "Islam is built on five" → These are called the "Five Pillars of Islam". Like a building, if the pillars are strong, the whole religion stands firm.
2. *الشَّهَادَتَين* = The Two Testimonies of Faith: _La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur Rasulullah_.
3. *إِقَامِ الصَّلاَةِ* = Establishing the 5 daily prayers properly, on time.
4. *إِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ* = Giving the obligatory charity to the poor if you meet the conditions.
5. *الحَجِّ* = Pilgrimage to Makkah once in a lifetime, if physically and financially able.
6. *صَوْمِ رَمَضَانَ* = Fasting the month of Ramadan.
This hadith is *Agreed Upon - Sahih Bukhari 8 & Sahih Muslim 16*. It’s one of the most foundational hadiths in Islam.
Want me to explain the wisdom behind why these 5 were chosen as the pillars?

____________MATTERS OF FAITH __________
And the saying of Allah the Most High:
*{Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but righteousness is one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, and the Prophets, and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.}*
[Surah Al-Baqarah 2:177][in]

And His saying:
*{Certainly will the believers have succeeded}* [Surah Al-Mu’minun 23:1]...until the end of the verse.
Brief explanation:
Imam Al-Bukhari placed this as the title of a chapter in _Sahih Bukhari_ called "Kitab Al-Iman - Book of Faith". He uses two Qur’anic verses to show that *Iman/Faith is not just beliefs in the heart*, but also includes:

1. *Beliefs*: Allah, Last Day, Angels, Books, Prophets.
2. *Actions of worship*: Establishing prayer, giving Zakah.
3. *Good character/actions*: Spending on relatives, orphans, needy; freeing slaves; fulfilling promises; patience in hardship and battle.
That’s why the verse ends with: *"Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous"* - meaning true faith shows in deeds.
Want me to translate the full verse of Surah Al-Mu’minun 1-11 that lists the traits of successful believers?

Abdullah ibn Muhammad narrated to us, he said: Abu ‘Amir Al-‘Aqadi narrated to us, he said: Sulayman ibn Bilal narrated to us, from ‘Abdullah ibn Dinar, from Abu Salih, from *Abu رضي الله عنه_*, from the Prophet ﷺ who said:
*"Faith has sixty-some branches, and modesty is a branch of faith."*
[Tuhfat Al-Ashraf 12816][9]

---

Notes:
1. *Bضعٌ وستون* = "sixty-some" or "sixty-odd". Other narrations say "sixty-nine" or "seventy-some" branches.
2. *الحياء* = al-hayā’: shyness, modesty, bashfulness. In Islamic terms it means a praiseworthy restraint that keeps you from evil and encourages good.
3. *شُعبة* = branch/part/division. So faith is made up of many parts - beliefs, statements, and actions. Modesty/shyness is one of them.

This hadith is agreed upon - *Sahih Bukhari 9* and *Sahih Muslim 35*.

IF YOU ARE A SLAVE OF ALLAH , THEN RAISE YOUR IZĀR
1. Sourcing
The hadith was reported with several similar wordings. The most famous are:
1. *From Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه* who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
*"The izār of a Muslim should reach halfway down his shin, and there is no sin if it is between that and the ankles. Whatever is below the ankles is in the Fire. And whoever drags his izār out of pride, Allah will not look at him."*
Narrated by Abu Dawud 4093, An-Nasa’i 5331, Ibn Majah 3573. Graded Sahih by Al-Albani in "Sahih Abi Dawud".
2. *A wording close to your question:*
From Hudhayfah ibn Al-Yaman رضي الله عنه who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took hold of the muscle of my shin or his shin and said: *"This is where the izār should be. If you refuse, then lower, and if you refuse, then the izār has no right to go below the ankles."*
Narrated by At-Tirmidhi 1783 and he said: Hasan Sahih.
As for the exact wording *"If you are a slave of Allah, then raise your izār"*, it was reported by *At-Tabarani in Al-Mu‘jam Al-Kabir 3/268* from Ibn Umar, and its chain is weak. Al-Munawi mentioned it in "Fayd Al-Qadir" and said about its chain: it is weak.
2. Meaning of the hadith
The Prophet ﷺ explains the legal limit for a man’s izār/lower garment:
1. *Sunnah*: To halfway down the shin = middle of the shin.
2. *Concession*: What is between halfway down the shin and the ankles, there is no sin in it.
3. *Prohibited*: Whatever goes below the ankles, especially if done out of pride/arrogance, its doer is threatened with the Fire and that Allah will not look at him.

The wisdom: Avoiding arrogance and pride, and keeping the garment clean.

3. Ruling
- *Raising the izār above the ankles*: Mustahabb/recommended, and it was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ and his companions.
- *Letting it below the ankles without pride*: is prohibited.
- *Letting it below the ankles out of pride and arrogance*: Haram/forbidden and a major sin.
