Today, in the company of some comrades that included Aisha Yesufu, Dele Farotimi, and Dr. Moses Paul, I paid a solidarity visit to my dear friend and brother, the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde , at Ibadan, Oyo State, to commiserate with him and the good people of Oyo State, over the recent explosion that sadly claimed some lives and injured others.

Aside the economic loss incurred by the people, many of whom were rendered homeless by the incident, I am concerned about the trauma and psychological devastation experienced by these brothers and sisters of ours. Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families at these difficult times.

I sincerely thank Gov Makinde and his team for their prompt intervention in setting up an emergency center and donations channel, to help the victims of the tragic incident. That is what governance should be about - caring for the people.

I will definitely be making my token donations to the payment details provided by the government. We all, as one big family, share in their pains and discomforts at this time. Again, I pray God to grant eternal rest to the dead and grant quick recovery to the injured.

Concerned Nigerian: "Charles, why do we have an Arabic inscription on the Naira? Is Nigeria an Islamic nation?"

Charles Awuzie:
Please calm down. The problem we have in Nigeria is lack of proper citizenship education.

The Arabic script on the Naira is actually Ajami.

Ajami is a pre-colonial era practice of writing other languages using a modified Arabic script.
Ajami was sewn into the fabrics of the socio-cultural life of our ancestors.

Swahili and Hausa are the major languages written in Ajami.

Utendi wa Tambuka is a Swahili Poem written in Ajami around 1728AD. Utendi wa Tambuka is Swahili but the writing style is Ajami. (See Sample C in the pictures attached).

If you check the old Naira, (sample A in attached pictures) Naira Goma which means Ten Naira was written in Hausa with Ajami script. Yes, that's Hausa language but scripted with Ajami to reflect the historical relevance of Ajami in Africa. This has nothing to do with religion but history and culture.

But in 2007, President Olusegun Obasanjo cited that most Nigerians can now understand English language and there was no longer need to reflect Ajami on the Naira so the Ajami scripted Naira Goma was replaced with the modern Hausa language and written as seen in Sample B.

Now understand that Igbo and Yoruba are scripted in Latin Letters. Unfortunately, this is the reality of Africa as we lost our original African writing styles due to external influences. In fact, truth be told, the closest African writing practice we can have on the Naira is Ajami.

After Obasanjo's administration, Ajami was not used on lower Naira denominations until 2014 when President Goodluck Jonathan's administration issued a new N100 note to commemorate the 1914 amalgamation and the words “Naira Dari” — Hausa for “one hundred naira” — appeared in Ajami. Again, this was misunderstood but I blame the almost useless National Orientation Agency for not doing enough to educate Nigerians about the significance of Ajami.

Like I said in the opening sentence of this article, Nigeria's major problem is lack of proper citizenship education and history. We are lost but we know not.

We have embraced Latin scripting and developed phobia for Ajami which is the only surviving Africanized writing practice from pre-colonial era.

I leave you to judge whether we still need Ajami on our Naira or not... But at least Know that Ajami on the Naira has no connection with Islam just as Latin Letters on the Naira has no link to Christianity - it's simply a writing style.

My name is Charles Awuzie and I want Nigeria to work again.

Many killed as suspected herders invade Enugu communities
Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has condemned the attacks on the communities.
ByChinagorom Ugwu November 23, 2022 Reading Time: 3 mins read

Many people were Tuesday killed when suspected herders invaded Agu-Amede, a farming community in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria’s south-east.

The suspected herders also razed several houses and injured many.

The incident occurred at about 1 p.m.

A community leader, Augustine Odoh, who confirmed the attack to reporters on Tuesday, said the herders had been attacking the community since Saturday.

“They (herders) invaded first on Saturday, killed two people. Yesterday (Monday), they invaded the community again and killed eight people including our women and children. So many other people, about 25 of them were equally wounded. They are in the hospital; we don’t know how many people are going to survive,” Mr Odoh said.

He said the residents of the community were holding meetings to deliberate on how to carry corpses of those killed to Government House, Enugu, when the herders attacked again, on Tuesday.

Francis Ogbu, another community leader, said the herders attacked Iyi Asa, another village in the community during the Tuesday attack.

“This Tuesday morning, the herdsmen came again, shooting, burning houses and properties. As we speak, we do not know how many people have been killed,” he said.

The suspected herders also attacked Mgbuji, another community in the council area, where several residents were said to have also been killed and houses razed.

Other sources claimed that over 50 persons were killed in the attacks between Saturday and Tuesday in the affected communities.

PREMIUM TIMES could, however, not verify this claim.

A video clip apparently shot hours after the attack on Tuesday has gone viral on Social media.

In the clip seen by PREMIUM TIMES, several residents were seen fleeing their communities.

A source from the community told PREMIUM TIMES that many of the fleeing villagers were headed to neighbouring communities in Ebonyi State.

The police spokesperson in Enugu State, Daniel Ndukwe, did not respond to calls and a WhatsApp message seeking comments from him on the attacks.

Gov Ugwuanyi reacts:
Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has condemned the attacks on the communities.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Simon Ortuanya, disclosed this in a statement, after a close-door meeting with leaders of the communities on Tuesday at the Government House, Enugu.

Mr Ortuanya, a professor, asked heads of security agencies in the state to deploy more personnel to the affected communities to quell the attacks.

The SSG said the state government would meet with the leaders of the herders in the area “to decisively resolve the contentious issues that might have led to the recent attack”.

He said Mr Ugwuanyi has released N10 million for the immediate needs of the victims who have been taking refuge in some internally displaced persons camps in the communities.

He also said the governor has asked a delegation to visit the victims at the hospitals and internally displaced persons camps “to review their situation and ensure they receive adequate medical attention”.

Speaking after the close-door meeting, the Anglican Bishop of Eha-Amufu Diocese, Daniel Olinya, thanked the governor for the N10 million released for the victims.

“I am sure that when we take this money to them, every one of them is going to be happy, and I want to thank the governor and Enugu State Government for coming out immediately to intervene in this situation,” Mr Olinya said.

Frequent attacks
Mgbuji and other neighbouring communities in Eha-Amufu have been experiencing frequent attacks by suspected herders for some time now.

Three people were killed by suspected herders in the community in June.

In July, suspected herders reportedly abducted seven residents of the same community and shot three others.

The then Commissioner of Police in the state, Abubakar Lawal, visited the area in June, alongside top officials of the State Security Service, Nigerian Army and Nigerian Airforce, as part of the efforts to end the attacks.

The attacks have continued despite assurances by the security agencies to “decisively tackle” them.

EXCLUSIVE: Ex-Diamond Bank CEO, Alex Otti floats new bank, ‘Signature Bank’.

- Oluwafemi Adeyeye.

Dr. Alex Otti, former group managing director/CEO of defunct Diamond Bank Plc and governorship candidate of Labour Party (LP) in Abia State in the 2023 elections, is set to float a new commercial bank, Signature Bank Limited, THE WITNESS reports.

THE WITNESS reliably gathered that the new regionally licensed commercial bank will be unveiled this month at its headquarters located at 31B, Gana Street, Maitama, Abuja.

The new lender, when commissioned will provide personal, private and business banking services to the south-south, south-east, north-est region of the country, including Abuja.

Aside its Abuja office, insiders told THE WITNESS that the new bank is expected to begin operations with five other branches located in Port Harcourt, Enugu, Aba, Sokoto and Kano.

Otti is said to have poached a former senior banker in Zenith Bank Plc, Nonye Ayeni and another former senior official with Fidelity Bank Plc, Frank Anumele to lead the new bank.

While Ayeni, an experienced executive with hands-on experience of over 27 years in a variety of roles in the financial industry will oversee the bank as its managing director/CEO, Anumele, a former acting directorate head, South Bank with Fidelity Bank will act as its executive director.

After resigning from the rested Diamond Bank as its head honcho in 2014, Otti returned to active politics in his state, Abia State. His resignation had been greeted with mixed feelings. In particular, the fears in some quarters were that the Abia State-born gentleman was too polished for the murky waters of Nigerian politics. But he seemed to have thought it out, and resolved to contest for governor of Abia State in 2015 on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA. Though, he lost, he has not rested on his oars, rather, he has continued to pursue his political ambition by throwing his hat into the ring again for the number one job of the state, under the Labour Party.

Under Otti’s stewardship, (before Diamond Bank’s debacle began), the lender made a remarkable return to profitability and recorded impressive growth across all performance indicators year-on-year. After writing off toxic risk assets which resulted in the loss of N16 billion in 2011, the bank posted a profit before tax of N28.36 billion in 2012 and N32.5 billion in 2013. The bank also saw its total assets rise from N564.9 billion in February 2011 to N1.18 trillion by December 31, 2012 and N1.52 trillion on December 31, 2013.

Otti also spearheaded the expansion of the defunct Diamond Bank by doubling the full staff count from around 2,000 in 2010 to over 4,000 as at mid-2014, even as he vigorously grew the bank’s footprints from a network of 210 branches in 2011 to over 265 branches three years later. It was also under his watch that the bank established an international subsidiary in the United Kingdom, in addition to expansion in Francophone West Africa (Senegal, Togo, and Ivory Coast).

It is to be noted that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) classified the defunct Diamond Bank as one of the eight systematically important banks in Nigeria under his watch.

With the entrant of Signature Bank into the Nigerian banking industry, industry watchers are sure of a fresh new scramble for recognition in a terrain filled with already established banks.
