How to know who is governing us, soul, satan or the nafs?

AI : https://shaykh.ai

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
Alhamdulillah, from the teachings of Mawlana Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi (QS), understanding who is governing us—whether it is our soul, satan, or nafs (ego)—is a crucial aspect of our spiritual journey.

> Firstly, it is essential to recognize that our soul is always pure and connected to the Divine Presence of Allah ﷻ. The soul is never an oppressor (zalim) and is always aligned with truth (haq). The soul's purpose is to guide us towards righteousness and spiritual enlightenment.

> On the other hand, the nafs (ego) is a significant challenge in our spiritual path. The nafs can never be killed but must be controlled and purified. If left unchecked, the nafs partners with shaitan (satan) to lead us astray. The nafs is driven by desires and worldly attachments, and its role is to keep us confined to our physical and material existence, preventing us from reaching our higher spiritual reality.

To determine who is governing us, we must introspect and observe our actions and intentions:

1. **Signs of the Nafs Governing:**
- **Desires and Attachments:** If we find ourselves constantly pursuing worldly pleasures, material gains, and physical desires, it is a sign that the nafs is in control.
- **Negative Characteristics:** Traits such as anger, arrogance, hypocrisy, and intolerance indicate the dominance of the nafs.
- **Lack of Spiritual Progress:** When we struggle to maintain our spiritual practices and feel distant from Allah ﷻ, it suggests that the nafs is overpowering our soul.

2. **Signs of Shaitan's Influence:**
- **Whispers and Doubts:** Shaitan works by whispering doubts and negative thoughts into our minds, encouraging us to commit sins and stray from the path of righteousness.
- **Distraction from Worship:** If we find ourselves easily distracted from our prayers, zikr (remembrance of Allah), and other acts of worship, it may be due to shaitan's influence.

3. **Signs of the Soul Governing:**
- **Inner Peace and Contentment:** When the soul is governing, we experience a sense of inner peace, contentment, and closeness to Allah ﷻ.
- **Positive Characteristics:** Traits such as humility, love, kindness, and sincerity are signs that the soul is in control.
- **Spiritual Growth:** Consistent progress in our spiritual practices, increased devotion, and a deeper understanding of our faith indicate the soul's governance.

To overcome the nafs and shaitan, it is essential to engage in regular spiritual practices such as meditation, zikr, and seeking the guidance of a strong teacher. By purifying our hearts and aligning our actions with the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, we can ensure that our soul governs us, leading us towards the Divine Presence.

May Allah ﷻ grant you strength and guidance on your spiritual journey. Keep striving for good character, high himma (spiritual aspiration), and be of service to the Tariqa and others. Ameen.

WELCOME, MONTH OF THE MAWLID (AHLAN BI-SHAHRI-L MAWLIDI)

Written by Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse [Published as ‘Majmū’ Qasā’id al-Mawlid an-Nabawī’]

Translated by Adnan Wood-Smith, Revised 10/23/20

Ahlan bishahril mawlidī

Dhakaranā bil maḥtadī

Aṣlil uṣūlis sayyidī

Ḥabībinal mubajjalī

Welcome, the Prophet’s month of birth,

Making us all recall the worth

Of the most praised of those on Earth

Beloved prophet, source of all

Qad kāna khaira mursalī

Qablal wujūd al-awwalī

Wa lam yakun min jandalī

Li aṣlinal mu-aṣṣalī

He was the greatest messenger

Before creation did occur

And Adam, our progenitor

Was formed in clay, before his fall

Lam yadri khairal khalqī

Fī khalqihi wal khulqī

Siwal ilāhil ḥaqqī

Min malikin aw mursalī

No being, neither messenger

Nor angel, understands how were

His essence and his character

Except Allah, the Lord of All

Fa sha-nuhu sha-nun ʿajīb

Wa ramzuhu ramzul-ḥabīb

Ramzul-ḥabībi lil ḥabīb

Fil ʿurfi ghairu mushkilī

His nature so mysterious,

A metaphor was granted us:

His likeness is presented thus:

“Beloved,” as God did him call

Yā lal imāmil muʿtalā

Matā ajāba bibalā

Lawlāhu dāma mushkilā

Liʿaḍḥmi mā qad yanjalī

How great is this imam, who said,

“Indeed,” and thereby all us led

When “Am I not your Lord?” God said.

How apt a word, how grave a call!

Lawlal ḥabībul murtaḍā

Mā nīla mādhā yurtaḍā

Wa dīnuhul ladhir taḍā

Ilāhuhu fil azalī

If not for God’s Beloved, we

Would not have had this perfect dīn,

A path which God, eternally,

Is truly pleased with overall.

Ahlan bihī idh ḥumilā

Ahlan bihī idh nazalā

Mufakhkhaman mubajjalā

Qad fāqa kullar rusulī

So welcome to the Prophet when

His mother was with child and then

When he was born, as best of men

His majesty did all enthrall

Continuity of Biography of Sheikh Sidi Ahmed Tijjani RTA

He used to veil his face when he left his house to go to the mosque and remained veiled until his return to his place of seclusion. When Seyyidina (may ALLAH sanctify his precious secret) was asked for the reason why he used to veil his face in front of the people, he answered: “This may be because he had attained a certain degree of sainthood. Indeed, the consequence of this degree of sainthood was that all those who looked at him would not be able to look away for even a moment and would risk dying. He held this particularity for twenty-three years, that is to say, the characteristics of those who had acquired seventy-two categories of mohammedian knowledge. It is for all these reasons that he voluntarily veiled his face.

Seyyidina Ahmed (may ALLAH sanctify his precious secret) was brought into the world by the pious and pure lady Aicha (may ALLAH be pleased with her), daughter of Sidi Mohamed Senoussi Tidjani Madaoui. Furthermore, it is from his mother’s family that he gets his name. She was a pious and devoted woman with rare and precious qualities. She spent most of her days and nights evoking ALLAH and praying upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). She was a caring mother overflowing with love and mercy. She also had several other children, both girls and boys, who died at a young age. She accepted these ordeals with resignation and faith in the divine reward. So, of all her children, only a girl named Roqaya, then Seyyidina Ahmed Tidjani (may ALLAH sanctify his precious secret) and finally a boy named Muhammad but nicknamed Ibn Omar, because he was learned in the domain of knowledge and Quran, survived.

Continuity of Biography of Sheikh Sidi Ahmed Tijjani RTA

Seyyidina Ahmed Tidjani’s father (may ALLAH be pleased with him), Sidi Mohammed ibn Mokhtar, was a scrupulous, loved and respected scholar. Firmly grounded in the Sunna, he practiced zikr a great deal and taught in the field of exegeses and the Hadith. He appealed to the people and urged them to do good, for the Sake of ALLAH (The Glorified, The Exalted), inciting them to practice the Sunna, combatting all innovation, without fearing harm from others. Sometimes he received visits of Spiritual entities (Rouhani) who offered to satisfy his needs. He refused their offer and turned away from them saying: “Just leave me with ALLAH. I wish for no other tie than his. I have no need of you.” And so they left him. He was strongly attached to ALLAH and had in his home a room dedicated to zikr. He was also from a lineage of numerous scholars and realized saints.

We could mention, for instance, the great great-great-grandfather of Seyyidina Ahmed Tidjani (may ALLAH be pleased with him), Sidi Muhammad who was the first to settle in Ain Madhi where he married a woman from the tribe of Banou Toujine. He was also a great scholar who had in his home a room dedicated to spiritual retreat in which no other than him had the right to enter.

*Biography of Sheikh Ahmed Tijani, may ALLAH be pleased with him*

HIS CHILDHOOD

In Ain Madhi, a small village located a few kilometers from Laghouat, in the Algerian desert, there was a humble traditional earthen dwelling. In this humble dwelling, lived a young wife who, in a corner of this house and with all the courage for which the women of this region are known, gave birth to a son that she named Ahmed. It is thus that in 1150 of the hegira (1737/38 ad) came into this world Seyyidina Ahmed Ibn Mohammed Ibn Mokhtar Tidjani (may ALLAH sanctify his precious secret).

This isolated place, far from the turmoil of the cities, had already been reputed for many years for its great scholars and their piety. The renowned Sheikh Abdallah ibn Mohammed El Iyachi (dead in 1090 of the hegira) who passed through the village, mentioned it in his book Rihlata. He also met Sidi Ahmed, the great-grandfather and namesake of Seyyidina Ahmed Tidjani (may ALLAH sanctify his precious secret) who he described in laudatory terms as “a great scholar”.
