(Popularly known as ♟️DebbyQuick)
This young IZON-Ijaw woman is so big
A GIANT IN HER AGE BRACKET IN THE WHOLE OF AFRICA.
I will talk about her one of these days.
Just so you know she is the youngest Nigerian and African to win the prestigious Africa Youth Chess Championship last held in Accra, Ghana, winning 9/10 games.
Fresh from her outstanding performance at the African Individual Chess Championship 2024 in Accra, Ghana, where she halted South Africa’s WIM Jesse Nikki‘s winning streak and also had a draw against Egyptian WGM Shahenda Waf.
Quickpen displayed her abilities and skills at the tournament, which held at the Chevron Recreation Centre in Gbagada, Lagos.
In 2018, just a year after she began her career as a chess player, Quickpen, then 6years old, represented Bayelsa at the National Sports Festival held in Abuja, making her the youngest athlete in the history of the event in Nigeria.
Just like a well-scripted movie, Quickpen’s success at a very young age was not accidental as the JSS3 student of Potter’s Touch High School, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, had the support of her parents(especially the mom; Vera Quickpen) to play chess, hone skills and develop to become one of the best chess players of her generation, right from when she showed interest in the sport.
“Chess is different from other sports because it makes me smart, intelligent and standout in everything that I do and that is why I picked it over others,” she said.
At age 9, Deborah was Under 10 African Chess Champion 2021.
At age 11(2023), Ebimoboere Deborah Quickpen emerged champion after amassing 9.5 points in 11 rounds of games at the eight-day National Championship in Lagos making her the youngest person ever to win this national title. She was crowned Nigeria Chess Champion 2023.
She is also ‘Ambassador of Bayelsa State youths’ as appointed by the governor of the state, his excellency Sen. Douye Diri.
She had also represented Bayelsa state at the 6th National Youth Games at Ilorin, Kwara State, where she won three gold🥇🥇🥇medals.
In addition, Miss Ebimoboere was awarded 4 million and scholarship(secondary to university level) to study home/abroad for her choice course. Not to mention the numerous sponsorship even from David Lyon, former governorship aspirant and lot others and trips.
The Chess champion, Deborah in time past has been billed to represent Nigeria at the Children Competitions in Namibia🇳🇦
She, also bagged Nigeria's Women's National Champion (12) to becoming the Sole Leader of the U2000 category at The National Friends of Chess Tournament!
Bayelsa's Deborah Ebimoboere Quickpen (12) emerges Best Female and Best Under16 player of the National Friends of Chess Tournament.
What an impressive trophy collection🔥
Standup for the champion!!
Just leave the game of chess for us😌
The kid sensation picked her mother and Hungarian-American, Susan Polgar as her role models.
Her biggest dream is to become a Grandmaster in Chess and Medical doctor and own her own chess foundation where children and young ones will learn and become better persons to themselves and to the entire society as she does chess during holidays while taking her academics seriously during school hours.
“The journey has been awesome but the target is to become a Grand Master and I will continue to develop myself to achieve that,” she said.
As she continues to hone her skills and soar higher, DebbyQuick remains a force to reckon with, captivating chess enthusiasts with her strategic brilliance and unwavering passion for the game.
Having shown the stuff she’s made of in Africa in such a quick time, it’s perhaps a matter of time before she wows the entire chess world in the near future.
The Bayelsa-born star’s rise seems to know no bounds. The youngster, who won’t turn 12 until June, has won everything in the junior categories while also daring to rub shoulders with some of the elite players despite her young age.
Also, we have big minds like Treasure Ebiakpo and Shine Ekpore of the IZON-Ijaw tribe who made us all proud respectively.
