A CO₂ fire extinguisher contains liquid carbon dioxide (CO₂) stored under very high pressure (about 55–60 bar at room temperature).

Here's what happens inside and how it works:

Inside the cylinder: Carbon dioxide is stored mostly as a liquid, with a small space above it filled with COâ‚‚ gas. The high pressure keeps the COâ‚‚ in liquid form.

When you squeeze the handle: The valve opens, allowing the pressurized liquid COâ‚‚ to rush up the siphon tube and out through the horn.

As it leaves the extinguisher: The pressure drops suddenly, causing the liquid CO₂ to expand rapidly into gas. Some of it also turns into tiny particles of dry ice (solid CO₂), making the discharge extremely cold (around −78.5°C).

How it puts out the fire:

Displaces oxygen: COâ‚‚ forms a cloud around the fire, reducing the oxygen level below what is needed to sustain combustion.

Cooling effect: The very cold COâ‚‚ helps cool the burning material, though its main extinguishing action is oxygen displacement.

Best used on:

Electrical fires (live electrical equipment)

Flammable liquid fires (Class B)

Not recommended for:

Deep-seated Class A fires (wood, paper, cloth), because the fire can reignite once the COâ‚‚ dissipates.

As someone involved in fire safety training, a simple way to explain it is:

A COâ‚‚ extinguisher works by releasing high-pressure carbon dioxide, which expands into a very cold gas that blankets the fire, pushes away oxygen, and stops combustion without leaving any residue.

A Dry Chemical Powder (DCP) fire extinguisher works by interrupting the chemical reaction that keeps a fire burning.

Here's how it works:

When you press the handle, compressed gas forces the dry powder out through the nozzle.

The powder covers the burning material, cutting off the fire from oxygen.

At the same time, the powder stops the chemical chain reaction that keeps the flames alive.

This quickly extinguishes the fire.
Dry Chemical Powder extinguishers are effective on:

Class A: Wood, paper, cloth, and plastics (with ABC powder)

Class B: Flammable liquids such as petrol and diesel

Class C: Flammable gases such as LPG
Electrical fires: Safe to use on energized electrical equipment because the powder does not conduct electricity.

As a firefighter, a simple way to explain it during training is:
"Dry chemical powder extinguishes fire by smothering the flames and breaking the chemical chain reaction that sustains combustion."
This is why DCP extinguishers are one of the most versatile and widely used fire extinguishers.

A foam fire extinguisher is a type of fire extinguisher used mainly to put out Class A and Class B fires.

How it works:

The foam forms a blanket over the burning material or flammable liquid.

This blanket cuts off the fire's oxygen supply.

It also cools the fire, helping to prevent it from reigniting.

Suitable for:

Class A fires: Wood, paper, cloth, rubber, and plastics.

Class B fires: Flammable liquids such as petrol, diesel, paint, and kerosene.

Do NOT use on:

Electrical fires, unless the extinguisher is specifically rated for electrical use and the power has been isolated.

Cooking oil and fat fires (Class F).

How to use a foam extinguisher (PASS):

Pull the safety pin.
Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
Squeeze the handle.
Sweep the foam from side to side until the fire is extinguished.

Foam extinguishers are commonly found in offices, warehouses, petrol stations, garages, and industrial premises, where both ordinary combustible materials and flammable liquids may be present.
