I don’t know why I’m taking my time to teach us about SCUML today. But somehow, I feel led to do it.

Maybe someone reading this is just one step away from falling into what I’m about to share.

So let me walk you through a real-life scenario.

Last year, one of my clients reached out to me in panic.

His message came in around 8:30 AM.

“Coach, EFCC sent me a notice through SCUML. They asked me to appear at their branch office for inspection. I don’t even know where to start. I just dey shake.”

I quickly asked him to forward the notice.

And truly, it was real.

A formal SCUML notification asking him to appear with key documents for review.

One of the documents they listed?

AML/CFT Policy Manual.

Sadly, he didn’t have one.

He didn’t even know what it was.

When he got his SCUML certificate earlier that year, nobody educated him on what it meant to stay compliant.

He just got the certificate, celebrated, and moved on.

But the real work starts after the certificate.

I told him to calm down. That panic won’t solve anything.

And I began to educate him.

I explained what an AML/CFT policy manual is.

It’s a simple compliance document that outlines how your company will prevent, detect, and report suspicious financial activities, especially if you handle client funds or engage in cash-based services.

I then helped him draft one.

Tailored it to his business operations.

Gave him instructions on how to file it, organize other documents, and prepare for the visit.

When the day came, he went for the inspection.

Well, he wasn’t 100% compliant. So yes, they flagged a few things.

But he didn’t get penalized. Because at least, he showed proof of effort and willingness to stay in line.

That experience taught him a big lesson.

Now here’s why I’m sharing this with you.

If you’ve received your SCUML certificate and you’re just keeping it one side without proper documentation and internal compliance, you’re walking on a minefield.

Let me tell you something many people don’t know.

If your business is not registered, you're leaving money, respect, and serious opportunities on the table.

People will buy from you, but they won’t really trust you.
