Kenya is facing heightened civil unrest as the death toll from Monday’s nationwide anti-government protests has risen to 31, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR). This marks the deadliest single day since the protests erupted earlier this year.
Over 50 people have reportedly been killed in the last two weeks alone, with 107 others injured and more than 500 arrested amid widespread looting and property destruction including attacks on retail outlets and public infrastructure. Police are yet to clarify whether the fatalities include security personnel.
The protests, largely driven by Kenyan youths and civil society actors, have gained momentum nationwide, fuelled by anger over police brutality, alleged corruption, and a soaring cost of living under President William Ruto’s administration. Protesters are now openly demanding the President’s resignation.

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday ruled that the Nigerian Senate acted beyond its powers by suspending Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months, ordering her immediate recall to the Red Chamber.

Justice Binta Nyako, who delivered the judgment, described the duration of the suspension as “excessive” and without a clear legal foundation.

According to the court, both Chapter 8 of the Senate Standing Orders and Section 14 of the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act, which the upper chamber relied upon, do not stipulate a maximum suspension period. As such, they were deemed overreaching in this case.

The judge pointed out that since the National Assembly is only required to sit for 181 days in a legislative year, suspending a lawmaker for roughly that same length of time effectively silences the voice of an entire constituency—a move she described as unconstitutional.

The court, in a ruling that was delivered by Justice Binta Nyako, noted that the embattled lawmaker went against its order by publishing a satirical apology to the Senator President, Godswill Akpabio.

It held that the said apology, which she published on her page on April 7, made a mockery of a gag order that was placed on the parties by the court

Consequently, the court ordered Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to within seven days, publish an apology to it in two national dailies and also on her page.

The court equally ordered her to pay N5 million fine, stressing that her contempt was in a civil proceeding.
