BOSCHMA donates 8,000 units of Ringer's Lactate to fight cholera outbreak in Borno
The Borno State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (BOSCHMA) has donated 400 cartons of Ringer’s Lactate fluids to the Borno State Ministry of Health and Human Services as part of emergency measures to tackle the ongoing cholera outbreak.
The recent outbreak of cholera in some parts of Borno State has posed a significant public health challenge, resulting in increased cases of severe dehydration and other life-threatening complications among affected populations.
According to reports, the outbreak has infected over 3,000 people across seven local government areas of the state, with 37 deaths recorded so far.
Effective management of cholera cases requires prompt rehydration therapy, with Ringer’s Lactate Fluid being one of the essential medical commodities recommended for the treatment of moderate to severe dehydration.
In response to the ongoing cholera intervention efforts by the Ministry of Health and Human Services, Borno State, it has become necessary to support the state's emergency response mechanism through the provision of critical medical supplies.
The donation of Four Hundred (400) cartons worth N4.4 million, equivalent to Eight Thousand (8,000) units, of Ringer’s Lactate Fluid was made on Saturday evening at the Borno State Drugs Management Agency (BODMA) facility in Maiduguri.
The supplies were approved by the BOSCHMA board as an immediate response to the rising cases.
Speaking at the handover, BOSCHMA Executive Secretary, Dr. Saleh Abba Kaza, said the gesture was aimed at saving lives and supporting health workers on the frontlines.
'This gesture is necessary in order to save lives.
'It is an emergency response to what is currently happening in some parts of the state, and the board of the agency approved the donation to support the Ministry of Health,' he said.
Representing the Commissioner for Health, a ministry official thanked BOSCHMA for the support, describing it as 'life-saving support that can restore life.'
He commended the Executive Secretary for his responsive and humanitarian action, saying Dr. Kaza has shown true commitment to the health and well-being of Borno people.
Dr. Kaza also called on other government agencies, NGOs, and stakeholders to join efforts to curb the spread of cholera and strengthen public health interventions.
After the presentation, the Executive Secretary and his team visited one of the infectious disease treatment centres at Njimtilo along the Maiduguri-Kano Road.
They donated 40 cartons of Ringer’s Lactate fluids to the facility to support patient care.
The intervention will help address shortages of essential intravenous fluids in affected health facilities and ensure uninterrupted treatment of patients during the outbreak period.
Cholera spreads through contaminated water and food and can cause severe dehydration within hours.
Health officials have urged residents to practice good hygiene, drink safe water, and report cases of acute watery diarrhea to the nearest health facility immediately.
