Each Wednesday I will answer a popular question from my community. This week's question from Julie is:
👉 Does the news affect the way I trade?
If market-moving news comes out while I am in a trade, then the position will be affected by the price swing, no doubt about it.
This will affect the trade in a positive or negative sense depending on the news and the direction I am trading.
The other consideration is whether I would alter my approach based on rumour or news announcement, and the answer is no.
We humans have a tendency to overcomplicate things, especially in trading! Traders need to be decisive, and for that, we need to be focused.
News and rumours can shift our focus, and that never helps trading outcomes. In fact, it often means you miss the trade.
For me, the charts tell the story - and that is where my attention lies. If good things are happening, there will likely be uptrends, and if bad things are happening, there will be downtrends.
The charts tell me the news in this sense.
To sum it up, I don't let news stories impact my trading method. My checklists are more robust than any news story ;)
When I trade, I manage every position to a maximum of 1% of my account capital, so even if I make a loss, it's not going to hurt me.
My rules-based, checklist approach means I am not taking 30 trades a day. In fact I would be lucky to find 6 trades in a day, so the risk is managed in the position size of 1% and the nature of how I trade.
