The Modern Role of the Project Quantity Surveyor (QS)

The modern Project Quantity Surveyor (QS) has evolved significantly from the traditional role of a mere cost estimator.
While managing all costs related to a construction project remains central, today’s QS is also a strategic *financial manager* involved at every stage of the project lifecycle. This position is critical to ensuring a project’s financial success, accountability, and long-term sustainability.

It is therefore *paramount for every financial adviser/manager* to be conversant with Financial Performance Reports on all ongoing projects. The purpose is to provide stakeholders with a clear overview of financial health, project profitability, expenditure trends, and budget adherence.

Key Contents of a Monthly Financial Report may include:

1. Revenue Summary: Total earnings vs. projections.
2. Expense Summary: Detailed breakdown of direct and indirect costs.
3. Cash Flow Statement: Inflows, outflows, and net cash position.
4. Budget Variance Analysis: Actual spending vs. budgeted amounts.
5. Profitability Metrics: Gross profit margin, net profit margin, ROI on projects.
6. Key Financial Ratios: Debt-to-equity, current ratio, etc.
7. Forecasts: Updated financial projections for upcoming months.

The modern QS is not just about counting costs, but about creating value, driving efficiency, and ensuring financial sustainability in construction projects.
