Quick update on the Russian landrace plants from the Vavilov collection.

They could have eaten the seeds and saved themselves. Instead, during the Siege of Leningrad, Russian scientists chose starvation to protect the Vavilov seed collection.

Under Hein’s guidance, we explore the remarkable traits of these heritage Russian landraces — hardy, early-flowering, and adapted to short seasons and cold climates.
These genetics were collected nearly a century ago as part of Nikolai Vavilov’s mission to preserve global crop diversity, and today they continue to teach us about the resilience and evolution
