I grew up where love was tough and fists were currency.
I didn’t learn kindness — I learned survival.
By 13, I was arrested 38 times.
By 20, I was the youngest heavyweight champion in history.
They called me “Iron Mike” — like I wasn’t supposed to bleed.

I had money, fame, mansions, tigers, private jets…
But I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t breathe.
The world saw knockouts.
I saw ghosts.

At 40, I started asking better questions.
Not “how do I win?”
But “why was I always fighting in the first place?”

And the truth?
I wasn’t fighting the other guy.
I was fighting myself. My fear. My father’s silence. My mother’s pain. My own shame.

Now, at 60, I’m not chasing anything.
I grow mushrooms.
I hug my pigeons.
I walk barefoot on grass and cry sometimes for no reason at all.

I talk more about forgiveness than uppercuts.
I don’t need the belt. I don’t need the roar of a crowd.
I just want to eat good fruit, tell the truth, and die knowing I broke the cycle.

“Suriname kent veel mensen die ooit het onderwijs hebben verlaten en geen weg terug meer vonden. Tienermoeders, werkenden zonder diploma, mensen met een leerachterstand, zij kunnen zich bij ons laten bij- of omscholen, op een tempo en niveau dat bij hen past.” Dat zegt Erna Aviankoi, oprichter van opleidingsinstituut Impact Academy, dat in oktober begint met MBO-opleidingen, in gesprek met de Ware Tijd. Naast volledige opleidingen kunnen deelnemers losse modules volgen, waarvoor ze een certificaat of verklaring krijgen. Maar de school richt zich ook expliciet op volwasseneneducatie. Dit moet het instituut aantrekkelijk maken voor werkenden, die zich willen specialiseren in een specifieke vaardigheid zonder een meerjarige opleiding te volgen. De nieuwe onderwijsinstelling begint met zeven ‘zachte’ MBO-opleidingen: journalistiek, communicatie, marketing, eventmanagement, internet veiligheid, multimediadesign en mediamanagement. In februari 2026 wordt begonnen met HBO-opleidingen. “We willen later dat jaar ook leerkrachten en verpleegkundigen opleiden. Niet alleen voor de stad, maar voor het hele land”, zegt Aviankoi.

West Muhammad, a 14-year-old cybersecurity engineering major, has become the youngest freshman in Coppin State University’s history. The Baltimore native, driven by a passion for computer safety and problem-solving, earned the prestigious F***y Jackson Coppin Scholarship, covering his full tuition and books.

For West, choosing Coppin State was an easy decision. "Coppin was always my first choice," he told Coppin State University. "The university offers the perfect environment for me to grow and explore my interests." His mother, a Coppin alumna, knew the institution’s supportive community would nurture his talents.

Beyond academics, West is a writer for The Final Call, where he addresses pressing community issues. His work reflects both his sharp intellect and dedication to making a difference.

Dr. Anthony L. Jenkins, President of Coppin State, praised West’s arrival: "West had his choice of many institutions, but he and his mother knew our nurturing environment and quality academics would be the perfect fit. He exemplifies what’s possible with determination and the right support."
