🎹 Happy International Left-Handers Day!

Today we're spotlighting ‘Base’ by Louis Andriessen, a short work for piano left hand, written in memory of Boosey & Hawkes Artist Representative David Huntley.

Reflecting on Huntley, Andriessen recalled: “The first time I met David, he wore heavy cowboy boots and talked about his love for country and western and rock and roll. That is, I think, what the piece is about.”

Written from minimal materials, ‘Base’ is unmistakably Andriessen: direct, distinctive, and full of character.

Two orchestral works, two national premieres today: Gabriela Ortiz‘s „Antrópolis“ arrives in Germany, while Bernd Richard Deutsch’s „Intensity“ receives its first performance in Austria.

🪩 In „Antrópolis“, Ortiz creates a vibrant sonic portrait of Mexico City through its legendary dance halls and nightclubs. Memories of cabarets, live dance orchestras, experimental music and the city’s nightlife come together in what the composer describes as „the sonorous reflection of a city through its antros“. At Young Euro Classic in Berlin, the work is performed by the combined forces of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas and the Penderecki Youth Orchestra under Carlos Miguel Prieto.

🎺 At Bregenzer Festspiele, the Wiener Symphoniker and Petr Popelka present the Austrian premiere of „Intensity“. Reflecting an intense period in Deutsch’s own artistic and personal life, the work moves between euphoric, outward energy and moments of quiet introspection, building towards an emotional climax at its centre.

Two composers, two cities, two very different expressions of orchestral intensity.

Today sees the world premiere of Enrico Chapela's "Alebrije" with cello soloist Zuill Bailey Summermusik, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. 👏

"Alebrije" is a movement of a collaborative work between five composers, “Visions of Humanity and Unity,” which was commissioned in honor of America at 250.

In an interview with Cincinnati Magazine, Summermusik Executive Director Evan Gidley commented: "“They’re all writing independently—they don’t know what the other ones are writing. The prompt was basically, look at the Declaration of Independence. Is there a line of text that maybe resonates with you? How do you envision this historical document and the impact it’s had on your particular culture?”

In celebration of Qigang Chen's 74th birthday, we're sharing a new video featuring his "Er Huang" for piano and orchestra. 🎹

Drawing on his childhood in Beijing, Chen incorporates melodies from Peking opera that he first encountered through his family, weaving them into his own musical language.

He writes: "The way I applied musical elements from Peking Opera to my own writing was not really based on musicological studies. Rather, these tunes were an essential part of my childhood in Beijing, and always intertwined with memories of my family and the society I lived in at the time. Many people from my generation would be able to hum these tunes by heart. These days, however, these familiar tunes have been almost entirely forgotten, as the younger generation is much more occupied by western pop culture. This is why, when I quote these tunes, I often do so with a great sense of nostalgia."

Tonight sees the world premiere of Ana Sokolović's "Montréal cirque" with Orchestre Métropolitain and Yannick Nezet-Seguin at Royal Mount Park, honoring its 150th anniversary. 👏

👉In an interview with Globe and Mail, the composer reflects on how she was inspired by the park itself, and pulls ideas from her recent opera, "Clown(s)": “Circus is a place where things
happen, or many things could happen. We laugh at clowns, because they dothe things we don’t want to do, or the things we are afraid of doing.”
