ගෙතුමක් පටන් අරන් ටිකක් දුරට ඒක කරගෙන යද්දි ඔයාලට හිතිලා තියෙනවද ඔයාට අවශ්‍ය ප්‍රමාණයට ඒක එන්නෙ නෑ කියලා?
එහෙමත් නැතනම් හිතුවට වඩා yarn ගොඩක් යනවා කියලා?
කොතන හරි වැරදිලා කියලා? හේතුව තමයි වැදගත්ම දෙයක් ඔයා අතින් අතෑරිලා.
Crochet Swatch එක ගැන තවත් විස්තර අරගෙන එන්න පොරොන්දු වුනානේ මම. මට video එකේ සඳහන් කරන්න බැරි වුන තව විස්තර ටිකක් තමයි මේ.
Video එකේ මම සඳහන් කලානේ මොකක්ද swatch එකක් කියන්නේ කියලා. Swatch එකක් කියන්නේ sample එකක්. ඔයාට කරන්න ඕන නිර්මාණය පොඩියට අත්හදා බලන්න පුළුවන් තැනක්. වරදින තැන් අඳුනගන්න පුළුවන් තැනක්.
සාමාන්‍යයෙන් 10x10cm කොටුවක් තමයි standard swatch size එක. මුලින්ම ඔයාලට හිතෙයි අනේ මොන වැඩකට නැති වැඩක්ද මේ කියලා. හැබැයි මේ පුංචි කොටුව ඔයාට පස්සෙ වෙන වැරදි හදන්න යන කාලය ගොඩක් ඉතිරි කරයි කියලාත් මම සඳහන් කලා.
ඒත් ඒ කොහොමද?
Swatch එක නිසා,
⭕️ඔයාට ඕන size එක හරියටම හදාගන්න පුළුවන්
⭕️ඔයාට ඕන yarn ප්‍රමාණය හරියටම calculate කරගන්න පුළුවන්
⭕️ඔයාට අවශ්‍ය විදිහටම ගෙතුමේ look and feel හදාගන්න පුළුවන්
⭕️ගෙතුම් නිර්මාණයට හරියටම ගැලපෙන stitch එක කලින්ම තීරණය කරන්න පුළුවන්
උදාහරණය:

මම ඔන්න මේ දවස් වල ඔයාලත් එක්ක blanket එකක් plan කරනවනේ. මතකද මම ඔයාලට කියලා stitch එකකුයි shape එකකුයි තෝරගත්තේ?
ඔයාලා මට Alpine stitch එක සහ square shape එක තෝරලා දුන්නා. මම කරන්න හදන්නේ එක එත් shapes එ‍කතු කරපු patchwork style blanket එකක්. නත්තල් තීමාවකට තමයි කරන්න හදන්නේ. Alpine stitch එකෙන් කරන මේ පොඩි කොටුව මම කොහොමද ගොතන්න ඕන කියලා තීරණය කරන්න මම පුංචි කොටුවක් ගෙතුවා.

මම ගොතන්න හිතන් ඉන්න yarn එකට මම 5mm ගෙතුම් කටුව භාවිතා කලා.
දැන් ඔන්න පේලි කිහිපයක් ගොතාගෙන යනකොට මට දැනෙනවා මේක ටිකක් මට ඕන තරමට වඩා stiff. Blanket එකක දැනෙන්න ඕන සුව පහසුව මට 5mm hook එකෙන් ගොතපු කොටුවේ දැනෙන්නේ නැහැ. ඒ නිසා මම තීරණය කලා මේ වැඩේට හරියන්නේ 6mm ගෙතුම් කටුව බව. ඒ නිසා swatch එක නැවත 6mm කටුවෙන් ගොතාගත්තා. වැඩේ හරි.
හැබැයි මම blanket එක ලොකුවට ගොතන්න පටන් අරන් තියෙද්දි මේක වුනානම්?
එක්කො ආයේ ඔක්කොම ලෙහලා ගොතන්න වෙනවා. නැත්නම් කාඩ්බෝඩ් එකක් වගේ blanket එකක් තමයි මට අන්තිමට ලැබෙන්නේ.

මම වර්ණ මාරැ කරන්න හිතාගෙන ඉන්න නිසා මේ පොඩි කොටුව ඇතුලේත් ඒක try කරලා බැලුවා කොයි වගේද පේන්නේ කියලා. Techniques කිහිපයක් කරලා බැලුවා. එතකොට right side වගේම wrong side එකේ පේන විදිහත් බලලා මම සටහන් කරගත්තා මම වර්ණ මාරැ කරන්න ඕන ගැලපෙනම විදිහ මොකක්ද කියලා. ලොකු පදාසයක try කරන්න කලින් මෙතන කරාම මට කාලය ගොඩක් ඉතිරියි.

හැමදේම මට ඕනි විදිහට හදාගෙන stitch එකත් ලස්සනට ආව නිසා ඊළඟට මට ඕන size එක ගන්න මම stitches කීයක් ගොතාගන්න ඕනද කියන එක calculate කරගත්තා. මේක කරන්නේ කොහොමද?

ඊළඟට මට project එකට ඕන yarn ප්‍රමාණය ගැන අදහසක් ආව නිසා ඒ ප්‍රමාණයට order එකකුත් දැම්මා.

හැම වෙලේම අවසන් නිර්මාණයට ඔයා කරන දේම swatch එකටත් කරන්න මතක තියාගන්න. ඒ කියන්නේ ඔයාගේ අවසන් නිර්මාණය block කල යුතු නිර්මාණයක්නම් measure කරන්න කලින් block කරලා ඉන්න. ඊට පස්සෙ hook size එක adjust කරගන්න ඕනනම් ඔයාට ඒක තීරණය කරන්න පුළුවන්.
මොනාටද මේ වගේ swatch එකක් ඕන වෙන්නෙ නැත්තේ?
Scarf වලට, kitchen towels dish clothes වගේ ඒවට, ලස්සනට හරිම සයිස් එකක් නැති ඉතිරි යාර්න් වලින් කරන blanket වගේ ඒවට මේක ඇත්තටම වැදගත් නැහැ. ගොඩක් yarn වර්ග try කරන්න බෝලයක් වගේ ගෙනාවමත් මම මේ වගේ පොඩි පොඩි ඒවා ගොතනවා.
නමුත් ඇඳුම් වගේ හරිම සයිස් එකට තියෙන්න ඕන ඒවට, ලේස් නිර්මාණ වලට ලස්සනට neat එකට කරගන්න ඔයාට තියෙන හොඳම tool එක තමයි මේ.
ඔයාලා මොකද හිතන්නේ? මුලින් swatch එකක් ගොතන එකද, නැත්නම් පස්සෙ ආයේ ලිහ ලිහ ගොතන එකද ලේසි?

Have you ever started a crochet project, worked on it for a while… and then realized it’s not coming out the size you wanted?
Or maybe the yarn is disappearing way faster than you expected?
Or something just feels off and you can’t figure out why?
The reason is usually this: you skipped one of the most important steps in crochet.
The crochet swatch.
I promised you more details about swatching, so here they are (these are the things I couldn’t fit into the video).
In the video, I explained what a swatch actually is.
It’s basically a sample. A small space to test out your design before committing to the full thing. A place where you can spot mistakes early.
The standard swatch size is usually 10x10 cm.
At first, you might think, “Why waste time on this little square?”
But here’s the truth: that small square will save you HOURS of fixing mistakes later.
How does it help?
With a swatch, you can:
🥰 Get the exact size you need
🥰 Calculate the right amount of yarn
🥰 Decide if the fabric feels right (soft, drapey, cozy)
🥰 Choose the perfect stitch for your project
Here’s an example

Right now, I’m planning a blanket with you all. Remember I asked you to help me pick the stitch and shape?
You chose the Alpine stitch and the square shape.
I’m turning it into a patchwork-style blanket for Christmas.
So I made a small Alpine swatch to test things out:

I used 5mm hook with the yarn I had in mind. But after a few rows, I realized it felt too stiff not cozy enough for a blanket.
So I tried again with a 6mm hook… and that was perfect!
Imagine if I had figured this out after starting the full blanket? I’d have to frog the whole thing, or end up with a cardboard-like blanket.

Since I want to add color changes, I tested those in the swatch too.
I tried a few techniques, checked how both the right and wrong side looked, and decided which one I liked best. Testing here saved me a ton of time later.
3️⃣
Once I liked the look and feel, I counted my stitches and rows per cm so I could calculate the blanket’s final size. (I’ll explain how to do this step in a video soon)

Now I even know how much yarn I’ll need, so I placed my order.

Always treat your swatch the same way you’ll treat the final piece. If the final project needs blocking, block the swatch before measuring. Then adjust hook size if necessary.
When can you skip a swatch?
If you’re making a scarf, dishcloth, or scrap blanket with leftover yarn, you don’t really need one.
But for garments, lace projects, or anything that must come out to size, swatching is your best tool.
