Artifact of the Week: Miniature Volume of Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago

This copy of the original Russian-language edition of Doctor Zhivago was covertly published by the CIA. The front cover and the binding identify the book in Russian; the back of the book states that it was printed in France. CIA published the book in Russian after it had been banned by the Soviet Union as a "malicious libel of the USSR."

Renowned Russian author Boris Pasternak won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958 for his “lyrical poetry and epic” writing, particularly his masterpiece Doctor Zhivago, a love story set against the backdrop of the Russian Revolution.

In 2008, a book by Russian author Ivan Tolstoy alleged CIA secretly published the book as part of an ongoing U.S. campaign to promote authors who told the truth about the harsh realities of life in the Soviet Union at the time. CIA officially declined to comment on Tolstoy’s conclusions.

In 2014, CIA declassified its activities related to Doctor Zhivago, confirming that CIA covertly published the book.

Russia will intensify strikes on Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine, the Russian Defence Ministry said on Sunday.

It was in response to an interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in which he vowed to increase attacks on Russian refineries.
The ministry said Russian forces would step up attacks on military facilities, defense industry sites and related infrastructure in Kyiv and elsewhere in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine would double down on attacking Russia's oil refineries following new airstrikes by Moscow designed to force people to abandon Kyiv and other cities. He added that Ukraine would not target civilians.

Both Russia and Ukraine have always denied targeting civilians during the conflict.
