Amsterdam. 2016. Two Minds That evolved Strength Culture.

Before evidence-based coaching became a buzzword —
Charles Poliquin and Matt Wenning were already building it.

That seminar in Amsterdam wasn’t just a weekend of lifting cues.

💪💪💪HYPERTROPHY DOESN’T CARE ABOUT “PERFECT” RESISTANCE CURVES.
IT CARES ABOUT TENSION, EFFORT, AND PROGRESSION.

A common myth:
“Descending strength curves make free weights ineffective for lat growth.”

Reality:
Muscle does not respond to curve shape.
It responds to mechanical tension, high-threshold motor unit recruitment, and training near failure — regardless of whether resistance is slightly higher at one point in the range of motion. Now performance may be different but that’s a whole other story!!!!

Decades of hypertrophy research confirm that load + effort + progression are the primary drivers of growth — not perfectly matched resistance profiles (Schoenfeld, 2010; Schoenfeld et al., 2017).

That’s why T-bar rows remain one of the most effective lat developers ever used.

• Stable torso allows higher force output
• Deep shoulder extension loads long lat fibers
• Heavy loading recruits full motor unit pools

EMG analysis shows rowing patterns that emphasize shoulder extension consistently produce high latissimus dorsi activation (Andersen et al., 2014).

Wenning Principle:

Effort isn’t just personality — it’s shaped by environment, accountability, and clear standards. Great coaching builds structure that makes effort non-negotiable, even before motivation shows up. Over time, discipline creates belief. Belief creates buy-in. Buy-in creates high performers.
