Drones observe rapid erosion of permafrost coastline in the Arctic.
An international team of researchers from the University of Edinburgh, University of Exeter, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Alfred Wegener Institute and GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, flew drones for high-resolution surveys to observe erosion on Qikiqtaruk, (Inuvialuktun for Herschel Island), Canada to investigate coastal erosion events.

Postdoc Athira Menon of the UvA Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy won the Dutch final of FameLab on 9 May. FameLab is a pitch competition for young researchers, in which they have only three minutes to explain their research to the general public.

Are you interested in science and wondering what makes scientist in Amsterdam tick? Amsterdam Science Now gives the stage to three contributors to the ninth issue of Amsterdam Science Magazine.

1) In I feel you, therefore I help you, Selene Gallo (Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience) discusses her research on our willingness to help others, when specific areas of our brains our stimulated.

2) Using new telescope technology, Jakob van Eijnden (University of Amsterdam) was able to observe neutron stars that emit jets: powerful bursts of gas.

3) Jan-Berend Stuut, Senior Scientist at NIOZ - Texel & Associate professor (UHD) at VU Amsterdam, about mysterious long-distance transport of giant mineral dust particles.

SYNGO, a collaboration of 15 expert labs worldwide and the Gene Ontology (GO) Consortium, released a public knowledge base www.syngoportal.org , which aims to represent the current scientific knowledge about synapses in structured frameworks, called ontologies. The release of SYNGO 1.0 is supported by the first scientific publication in the leading journal Neuron, led by Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam scientist Frank Koopmans.
