If you’re anything like us, your literal and metaphorical junk drawer may be your ever-growing source of shame–a tobacco-dusted purse with a dozen sugar packets, that exploitative reality show you’d rather not admit to watching, a few hundred heart-wrenching text exchanges you can’t just delete. What does it mean to categorize something as junk — as disposable, dirty, shameful, worth hiding, or lacking in value — and what kinds of meanings, hierarchies, and exclusions does that category produce?
For this June’s edition of the Slimazine, we invite you to empty the contents of this junk drawer on our pages. Submit your proposals by May 21st to [email protected]
**For written proposals, please include a working title, a short description, and an estimated A5 page length. For visual, spread, or cover proposals, send us a brief idea of what you’d like to make — or the finished work, if it already exists. We’ll follow up to let you know if your idea has been approved before you move on to drafting.
